Absolutely. Take a light aircraft out for a flight in the summer and see how many bugs are left behind on the windshield once you're finished. You'd better believe at least a postage stamp's worth of extra mass will be left behind on the rotor blades over the course of any given helicopter flight. I'm also pretty sure I once saw a picture of a Soviet Mi-8 with bullet holes in the rotor blades that had been covered up with duct tape. I appreciate that they give every myth a certain degree of prima facie respect and due diligence, but I'm surprised this one made the cut at all.
@CZProtton5 ай бұрын
@@Omniprong Mi-8 is a combat helicopter gunship, even though its mostly for transport, that thing can take a lot and still fly. Not indicative of how a more civil helicopter will work, I assure you that a regular helicopter will most likely lose a blade if you shoot it.
@Omniprong5 ай бұрын
@@CZProtton A military helicopter is definitely more robust than a civilian one, but the difference isn't so substantial that one could fly with bullet holes in the rotor blades while the other would be rendered unflyable by a postage stamp. My point was that helicopters just aren't that sensitive, and there was enough readily-available evidence out there even at the time the episode was filmed that I'm surprised they bothered testing it.

A 1:7 scale helicopter doesn't weigh 1/7th of a real one, it weighs 1/7³ = 1/343th of one. They should've used a much smaller stamp. Distance, area and volume/mass/weight scales differently.
@peterknutsen30706 ай бұрын
Yeah, I’m surprised Grant didn’t point that out.
@CZProtton5 ай бұрын
@@peterknutsen3070 He knew the myth was bullshit just from thinking about it. So it does not matter. Helicopters are not that easy to crash, otherwise they would be completely unusable. I am quite sure there is probably more difference between helicopter blades just from wear and tear than the weight of a stamp, 0.15 grams. That is absolutely nothing, one helicopter blade is heavy, even on a very light heli. You can make a bullet hole inside one blade of an apache and it will still fly. Sure, that is an apache, but the helicopter mechanics are the same.

@@GuyDudeman By the time the episode aired, the magazine would likely have been of the stands. Magazines typically came out 1-2 months after content was made for them. Mythbusters, I think I remember hearing, was often around 4 months. So even if the episode was filmed the day after the photoshoot, it wouldn't have helped sell more copies. 41:07 This exact thing happened to me and my lab partner in high school, when we were doing a practice run of this recipe for a class assignment where we had to demo some kind of interesting chemical reaction. I found the recipe online. The teacher didn't have a frying pan, so we used a beaker on a hotplate. While we were heating up the mixture, it combusted and started spewing fire. It was so bad that the beaker melted to the hotplate and she had to throw the whole thing out. We had to open all the windows in the adjoining hallway to let out the smoke. The teacher said it was the worst lab accident she'd seen in 11 years of teaching, and she cancelled the assignment for the whole class and said she was never giving it out again because she didn't want to tempt fate anymore. After all these years, I'm very relieved to learn that this hasn't only happened to us!

Years ago we were at a festival and had some dry ice in the form of tiny pallets with us. On the last day I did basically the same, poured about a tablespoon of it in a bottle and played around with it for like 10 minutes and nothing happened. Then I threw the bottle away as we were about to leave and just seconds later it exploded in such a loud bang. Funny coincidence (or not so funny, depending on your perspective) a buddy was jumpstarting another car and just as he attached the last cable the bottle went off. Poor guy almos crapped his pants. Some people saw it happening and took the last bits of dry ice we had. When asking what they're up to, they said they want to make some bottle bombs and throw them in the portapotties. No idea how that ended though or if they even did it
