Every second Saturday of the month, an energetic group from Cold Springs Valley Church makes the trek down 395 to Reno’s 4th street area, pulling into an empty lot, just a few blocks down from the Cares Campus.
As soon as they arrive, they get to work setting up clothing racks, serving lines with crockpots of steaming gravy, and a table piled with snacks and copies of the New Testament. The line for food forms quickly, and a quiet morning is replaced by happy laughter, conversations, eating warm food and picking out donated clothes.
On a recent Saturday, the church members served biscuits and gravy, eggs, and coffee. They also had a huge selection of clothes and shoes for anyone in need of something new to spice up their wardrobe. When the group is there, they make a point to walk up and down 4th street, spreading the word about their free hot breakfast.
Allen Trimble is one of the many church members involved with this outreach program. He tells those who might be in need of a hearty meal: “If you guys want to come down and join us, we’d love to have you, and we’d love to sit down and just talk with you.”
CSVC outreach days have helped Reno community members meet new folks, share stories with each other, and even reconnect with long lost friends. They’re one of many groups in Reno devoting time and energy into making healthy meals for struggling neighbors.
