I love the book. I read it in the ninth grade and I enjoyed it more than the 1985 adaptation which I've seen first. I also love the musical and the new musical adaptation. In the musical adaptation, the director wanted to dive in Celie's head and explored her imagination as she process and overcome her trauma. In the Broadway version, Mister has a musical number called "Celie's Curse" where he was taking accountability for the wrong he have done in his life and how he treated the women in his life like Celie. That song was cut from the movie, but I wish it was in the movie. The movie was still incredible. I feel like it bodied the book, the 1985 adaptation and the musical without it being too overly musical. It was a nice balance and the music flowed perfectly. All of the actors delivered stellar performances. The Broadway musical is a more accurate adaptation and was closer to the book than the 1985 film was. The book is always wins for me. My only critique is I wish Celie and Shug's intimate relationship was explored more. The part of their relationship was very graphic in the book. Now, the movie is PG-13 so the director couldn't show much, but there are ways to do an intimate scene without showing too much and being too explicit. Celie never had a real passionate sexual experience. It would have been beautiful to see that.

Oh I wish the movie would have included Mister's song! I didn't know about that one. And yeah, they could have included more between shug and Celie while still keeping it pg13, and like I say in the video, I really wish we saw that they had a romantic relationship that spanned years! The movies make it seem like it was a crush that turned into platonic friendship. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 😊

This was a great video!! I just saw the musical last night and I loved it. The original movie has always been a favorite of mine but there were parts of the musical that made me cry. Especially at the end when they sing the last song I thought it was beautiful. I do think the original will always be a favorite but the musical was definitely wonderful and all the performances were just great!!

24:30 Oh that is a song in the musical actually lol. It's the first "The Color Purple"

Yeah I do really love that song and you're right it does capture some of those faith ideas from the book. I guess I just felt the specific scene in the purple field seemed brief.

Your video made me so excited to read the book! I have it on hold now and thought it would be too heavy, but seeing how much you love it makes me hopeful.

Very thoughtful review. I read the book many years ago and had forgotten the character arc of Mister and Sophia.

I loved 'The Color Purple', as a story. Though I'm still amazed that Celie was able to forgive Albert the way that she was, even though her reasoning was that "He love Shug, and Shug love him'. I wonder if Alice Walker had read any material written by women during that time period, maybe even her family members, to gain inspiration.

Yeah that's why that aspect of the story stands out so much to me! But that's an interesting question!

personally i'm not super into this story being a musical and oh the lack of queer content in the movie was very disappointing would be more ideal if this was a limited series

im doing an essay on this right now and yeah unfortunately they had to remove so much nuance ☹️ i thought it was really interesting how there were themes of karma that were super heavily enforced in the movie, where every character seemed to get what was coming for them. this is seen in positive ways, but especially with fonso and albert. in the movie, fonso's death was a result of fate as he never really was able to do right by celie, however in the book he continued on to marry a new woman and have a house and continued with a happy life. even with celie's confrontation, fonso wasnt really impacted much in the book. i think that added complexity of "yeah, this is how acceptable his actions are in this time and place that the novel is set in" is a really important addition. it really sparks celie's anger, and the audience as a whole.

Such a great point about her step dad! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, you are right they make a karma a bigger theme in the movie

I've watched a few videos and one thing has been killing me. What book is behind you, underneath Stephen King's Different Seasons? It has a woman on it that is patched together? The cover is gorgeous.

I hated the musical film remake! The bway musical is more like the original film, but it does incorporate more aspects of the novel. This musical film is such a watered down version of the stage show, it was such a shame. I didn't feel emotionally fulfilled at the end, like i felt at the end of the book, original film, and stage musical.
