For people don't know, in traditional Vietnamese singing, we use 5 nature elements to discribe how the singing sound like: Water (agile,, smooth, soft), Fire (husky, raspy, dark), Plant (easy to ears, soft, having some thickness), Earth (thick, a lot of weigh, loud) an Metal (thin, light, bright)
@tancanhle3779
@tancanhle3779 2 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry that it does not have any video to explain but it also says that everybody does have 5 elements in their voice, it is more or less some thing. For example, Vocal Trinity is one the most balance elenmet in their voice. Whitney has most of her voice belong to Earth (weigh), next is Fire (power,) , Plant (warm), Metal (so much bright at het uper belt) and water (agile). Mariah with most water (agile), Plant (warm), Metal (bright), earth (weigh) and fire (power). Celines is Plant (warm), water (agile), earth (weigh) , Metal (bright), and fire (husky, raps, power)

Warm Neutral is my absolute favorite. Kelly / Whitney / Morisette and Perrie just all have this sweet warm voice that feels like it can hit a switch & become dark powerful and commanding. It translates so usefully to live singing because it feels like they can sing anything.

@@kng001 That's sort of what "neutral" means though lol. Whitney (like Morisette / Kelly Clarkson / Perrie) were warm neutral hence that extreme versatility, they can sound either dark or bright on command. But cold? Never imo. If you hear Whitney even so much as speak she clearly has a naturally warm, cozy friendly tone that I don't think anyone would ever describe as cold.

Now I get it why when Red Velvet makes a comeback whether Red or Velvet side, Wendy mostly gets to shine in Red concepts because of her warm voice then Seulgi shines in their Velvet concepts because hers is more cooler. Thanks for this analysis.

Everyone described as "cool" I noticed had strong nasal resonance, and didn't tend to "smile" to "brighten" up their voice the way I was told to do in voice lessons to cut through the darkness! Also we can't overstate the contribution of mixing! I once heard a studio recording of my voice that "shaved off the dark" around my voice and made me sound warm bright, when I know I'm warm dark!
@aintnootherfan

There are many technical ways of modifying the tone of your voice, however everyone has a place in their voice, which is the most neutral and is the closest to their true tone. For example, I can sing with a darker and cooler tone to my voice by lowering my larynx and different vowel shaping, even though my voice is naturally on the warm neutral/warm bright side.

This feels like a sequel to the "The Problem With Unique Voices In Pop" video; great way of describing vocalists. It adds more individuality to classifying than voices than solely calling one a Light Lyric Soprano because some in the same fach and somewhat the same level of vocal development sound different eg. Ariana Grande & Demi Lovato, but these colors provide some reasons.

Depending how you sing, you can definitely change qualities. For example, I’m a bass and I mostly sing with a rounder and open mouth for the low notes. But when I do sing higher keys or just pop songs, I switch to my higher register which thins and sounds twangy. In other words, my vocal quality is considered cool bright but when I change it, I’m a warm bright.

I think changing vocal color is easier for neutral tones. For example Beyonce was a Cool/Neutral but her upper belts sound very bright. Whitney and Kelly were Warm Neutral but their upper belts are known for being dark, meaty and piercing. A dark or bright voice tends to keep its tone but neutral toned voices tend to have more versatility in changing their tone while maintaining the same quality of sound.

It's definitely possible for some singers voices to go through several categories if they sing through hormonal changes from their youth over a span of decades like my girl Whitney! She was girly bright in the 80s... then we got a smooth but darker tone on Bodyguard (being pregnant her voice dropped an octave)... which was nice but my personal fav was her full rich mature sound (The Preachers Wife mid late 90s/early 2000)! Whitney trademark at the height of her career. ❤️ P.s. While Aretha is Queen of soul, her voice also changed. Dionne Warwick too.

LOVED THIS 🤍 Also, under which archetype would you put these singers: 1. Demi Lovato (I'm thinking Neutral, like Ailee and Jade, because her voice isn't always too bright but isn't that dark either; she is also a very versatile singer and has hints of warmth and a more cool, sexy quality to her voice) 2. Leigh-Anne Pinnock (from Little Mix; would probably put Leigh in Warm Bright or Neutral Bright but I'm honestly not very sure) 3. Taylor Swift (definitely Neutral Bright) 4. Celine Dion (probably Warm Neutral but I can't be too sure) 5. Zayn Malik (I'm thinking Warm Neutral since Zayn's voice is quite dark for a tenor but isn't dark or low enough for him to be a baritone; his voice does carry quite a bit of warmth but also a piercing quality, especially when he uses his falsetto) 6. Harry Styles (I suppose he would come under Neutral or Warm Neutral since he seems to be able to access most of his range with ease and a sometimes warm, sometimes cool tone, albeit his vocal technique isn't great)

I’ve been trying to classify my voice in one of these. I think I might be Cool bright. Or warm dark. I can have some sweetness however have a darkness to my voice in my show choir that stands out.

Nice concept. I'd like to use it for three of my faves who didn't get to be in this video : Lara Fabian : I would put her in Warm Neutral Celine Dion : I think Warm Bright is fitting Faouzia : I'm less sure of it, but I would say Cool Neutral Do you agree ?

Mariah's voice went thru like multiple changes over the years, so she can be in many catagories imo. Buterfly era voice is totally different from Emotions era voice. Whitney's voice from the 1980's, is a much different voice from the mid 90's.

Warm neutral is my favorite, which explains why I always loved Whitney and Kelly. I don’t know Perrie but the little I’ve heard of her, it sounds like it’d describe her voice too. Mori on the other hand sounds more warm bright to me, along the lines of Mariah and Tori.

I get the difference between bright vs dark (basically bright voices have a bit of a higher sitting voice while darker voices sits a bit lower; bright voices also seem to emphasize higher notes and dark voices lower notes), but what is cool vs warm?? I'm guessing it's sharper vs rounder vowels but I'm not sure
@edwinjlr1345

That's exactly what it is. Colder voices sound metallic and somewhat thin, whereas warmer voices are rounder, and more velvety.

Dark vs Bright tone doesn’t effect range. Tone is relative and separate from pitch. Dark voices tend to sound more dramatic, metallic and imposing. Bright voices tend to sound more sweet, youthful and relatable. There’s many singers with dark tone that sing very high such as Sam Smith, Jennifer Hudson & Patti label, but it can be more polarizing because of how powerful and piercing it sounds. Likewise many bright voiced singers have lower range such as Michael Buble or Billie Eilish but it can be polarizing because it’s perceived as boring and overly casual / conversational. The over all goal is to either achieve a neutral tone, or lean into your strengths if you have a very dark or bright voice. This is why John Legend isn’t singing Bruno Mars-ish songs. TLDR; depth of tone determines your vocal color and is very habitual / unique. Pitch is vocal range. Women can hit the baritone just as men can hit the soprano, pitch just has more to do with finding the correct method.

@@Sloppyjoey1 You're right that the brightness or darkness of a voice does not determine the range, but it is related to the natural height and depth of the voice. The lower a voice is, the bigger, denser and darker it will be. The higher a voice is, the brighter, "smaller" and less naturally dense it will be. Hence why a Dramatic Soprano would sound darker than a Lyric Soprano, a Baritone darker than a Tenor, etc, if theyre all singing "naturally", however it is of course possible to manipulate tone color. But the natural darkness or brightness has to do with vocal chord mass. And I wouldn't describe Patti as having a particularly dark voice. Quite bright to me
@Sloppyjoey1
@Sloppyjoey1 2 жыл бұрын
@@cameron7644 "Natural" is relative, habitual and makes an assumption that 'natural' = universal. A Soprano can live all day in headvoice and a Baritone can live all day in chestvoice, and that's what's "natural" to them. The assumption that a Mezzo/Baritone *has* to have a darker, bigger, denser voice than a Tenor/Soprano is verrrrry outdated. And I say this as a 2nd Tenor (Spinto/Dramatic) who's always taken for a baritone until they can no longer explain the easy B4-D5 belts. If you compare Jennifer Hudson (Soprano) to say, Brandy or Beyonce (Mezzo), the system immediately breaks down and it doesn't even explain half the story. Jhud's voice is clearly denser, darker & bigger than Brandy, yet higher. And Brandy's voice is clearly brighter, smaller & more agile, but lower. Yet they have incredible stamina and it forces us to (inaccurately) assume one or the other is singing incorrectly or doing something unnatural. I won't debate Patti's timbre because it's not really needed to make my point that range and tone are largely separate things. The fach / classical timbre system is an imperialistic, European standard that is largely unfamiliar with higher / darker range & timbre combinations more commonly found in people of African & Asian ancestry. Pitch isn't tone, and correlation isn't cause.

I enjoyed this video; it felt like a taster to a lot more though! It would be good to hear your opinion on other major, iconic vocalists like Barry White, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Prince, Donna Summer, George Michael, Jennifer Hudson, Lauryn Hill and also Kelly Rowland. In the early days of Destiny's Child Kelly sounded a lot like Beyonce tone-wise but that changed in her mid 20's.

I think it would be good to get into how these voices can actually be characterized. Like "dark" can mean so many things. And the temperature of the voice? For example, I noticed most of the "bright" singers are in the the highest vocal range, aka soprano/tenor, and most of the dark singers had deeper voices.

Personally I would add weight or when we are talking color saturation to this chart. For example with Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga Dua Lipas voice is really heavy but Lady Gagas is far lighter same with Miley. Tbh I think Miley and Dua Lipa are more of a dark neutral than cool dark. I think Beyonce is a warm dark. The first thing I think of when I hear her voice is warmth but maybe that's just me. This is really fun.

I would describe myself as warm/ bright. I like to manipulate my sounds but my speaking voice is "naturally" higher for a male. It is my habitual voice but I "could " speak lower. It's not just my pitch but the vowels I tend to choose. I love smiley vowels when singing e aye etc. I love adding nasal qualities. I could add more depth but it doesn't feel right for me sometimes. It isn't the sound I go for ( sorry I'm not Adele.)
