A playthrough of Technos' 1993 Super NES beat 'em up arcade port, The Combatribes.
Played through as Bulova on the normal difficulty level.
The Combatribes is pseudo-sequel/followup to Renegade originally released as a coin-op in 1990. Did anyone else notice how much more bizarrely effeminate the characters look in the version compared to the arcade one?
Sure, it's been cut down and altered a bit, but this plays almost identically to the arcade version, and while it might not be long or terribly complex, it's a lot of fun.

The arcade ending and the SNES ending were quite a bit different. I'm a bit confused in the SNES ending they're carrying Martha away, but then it says they left and were never seen again, so I guess they took Martha with them? In the Arcade version, they leave Martha defeated on the pavement, lol. The SNES version evokes more feelings than the arcade version.

A great port of the arcade's spiritual successor to Renegade. It handles like Final Fight, looks like a technicolor seizure, and has certainly one of the least expected final bosses I've ever encountered in a game.

@@infinitygenealpa They said "successor", not "sequel". There's a difference. Also, there's a game that *is* actually titled "Double Dragon IV". Not that it retcons Super Double Dragon out of canon.
@ginormousaurus8394
@ginormousaurus8394 3 жыл бұрын
@@infinitygenealpa River City Ransom and Double Dragon were both successors to Renegade. The games were all originally developed by Technos. The Japanese version of Renegade was titled Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun and had Japanese high school student Kunio as its protagonist. It spawned River City Ransom, Super Dodge Ball, and other games that were part of the Kunio-kun series in Japan. When Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun was localized for western release, it was renamed Renegade and its graphics were altered. The setting was changed to an American city and the protagonist was redesigned to resemble one of the titular gang members from the movie The Warriors. Double Dragon was a spiritual successor to Renegade aimed at international audiences. While the Kunio-kun series was based on Japanese youth culture, Double Dragon was influenced by Enter the Dragon, The Warriors, Mad Max, and Fist of the North Star. The Combatribes was another Technos brawler that was similar to Renegade. The Combatribes also appears to have been influenced by The Warriors, with its New York City setting and distinctive gangs. There were also two sequels to Renegade released for home computers, titled Target: Renegade and Renegade III: The Final Chapter, but they weren't developed by Technos.

Bulova literately had the best run attack against the final boss, because she couldnt counter it like the others. The jump kicks made it harder to hit her, but if you kept running and socking her over and over with Bulova she couldn't do a damn thing against him. He was basically easy mode against her. But if you got to her with the other guys solo? Goddamn she was hard lol.

I never heard about that. How did you find Super Double Dragon ? I was disappointed by the sequel, but the fighting mechanics and the quantity of moves was great. One of the best ! But the speed of the game, the lackluster quantity of enemy types and the bosses was just so plain and boring and and it killed it for me. I sold Super Double Dragon and kept The Combatribes for my definitive SNES Collection.

Only it's actually Combatribes NOT Double Dragon. Combatribes was meant and designed for arcades to have THREE players at the same time battle together and beat the game... Double Dragon was just two players... for whatever reasons game devs had difficulties trying to make beat em ups that had three or four players during 16bit hardware even though the multi taps existed but were used for sports and Bomberman games. It's usually ignorant fans who like to devalue Combatribes as a Double Dragon replacement or something like as if Tecnos Japan couldn't make original games. However a big problem with Double Dragon is that despite being made by Tecnos Japan and being extremely popular and profitable is that the western distributor is a bit of a mess between Tradewest and Taito so it's no wonder Tecnos Japan tried to make their own games they could claim where some other company wasn't claiming rights. Also despite Combatribes being fairly close to the arcade version minus three player mode the game was made at a still early time for Super Nintendo because even Tecnos Japan were still learning how to use the Super Nintendo hardware which you can see for yourself with how the Japan only Kunio Kun games were just far superior and how Super Double Dragon or Return of Double Dragon was made too early in Super Nintendo that However well it sold, it didn't get a proper sequel due to timing and the popularity of versus fighting games where most game companies saw Capcom selling 6 million rom cartridges in 92 so they basically were chasing fighting game money. Even Irem who hadn't made beat em ups on SFC until UnderCover Cops didn't have it easy to have a two player mode and that game stayed in Japan unfortunately. What's worse is that Sega Japan's Bare Knuckle games were being censored and altered by Sega of America's staff changing the name to Streets of Rage and screwing the game's identity to the point that Bare Knuckle III had severe censorship that angered gamer magazines in the import scene who saw that horrible censorship while Sega of America's garbage made games like Eternal Champions had violent gory torture porn fatalities scenes in videogames and even the garbage Double Dragon V fighting game which wasn't made by Tecnos Japan also features stages and weird violent torture porn which begs the question why subsidiary branches chose to do censorship on Japanese games and alter the story which ended up disappointing the actual BUYERS... By doing that the late teens and 20 year old gamers were essentially being snubbed by Sega of America's staff and by other companies who targeted the Japanese games being localized which was a horrible practice as word gets around and people take the path of refusing to buy until a better version shows up without knowing that less sales or mediocre sales mean no more of that series.

I remember renting this game from a local video store when I was 10 or 11. I loved it. I always thought Berserker looked like Billy Lee from Double Dragon, since it was also made by Technos. It's too bad that a cool game like this didn't have much story to it. It was so vague. If a reboot ever sees the light of day, I hope the devs can show more background of the characters. In my view, that is what makes characters so endearing.

This looks like a kind of game where once you play it, it puts hair on your chest. In fact I miss the days of beat 'em ups like Final Fight, the Simpsons and X-Men arcade games, Brawl Brothers, and the Combatribes. You could argue Dynasty Warriors is sort of a modern beat 'em up, but It's not the same. Something about walking to the right and beating up thugs is so satisfying.

Yep. The arcade original was 30 FPS as well.

Dialogues are pretty mid imo, even when considering that it's from a 90s game by japanese game company. But the gameplay is solid!

The original arcade game didn't even have dialogue so the SNES version must be written by janitors.

@@BoozeAholic probably. maybe it was good in the japanese version, but got ruined from crude localization

This game sucks. I own it for the SNES. I mean seriously one screen then a fucking boss fight? Thats some of the laziest shit programming ive ever seen in a god damn beat em up, like they seriously thought just putting a bunch of bullshit in the backgrounds actually excuses them for NOT DESIGNING FULL BEAT EM UP LEVELS and the hit detection is ass as well. This type of lazy ass shit belongs in some 8 bit. But DEFINITELY not the 16 bit SNES. Easily the worst beat em up on the SNES hands fucking down.
