Comedian Norm Macdonald waged an epic nine-year battle with cancer and fought cancer to a draw. When he occasionally got serious during interviews, he would share his ideas about God, Jesus, Christianity, the Bible, evil, and the soul. In this video, David Wood examines Norm's thoughts on people being created in the image of God, and shows how Norm was actually fumbling his way to the Gospel.

Not a Christian, but I’ve been reading the Bible because of norm. Norm is my favorite comedian, and learning about how interested he was in religion is starting to rub off on me. I started reading the Bible because he said you should never judge a book you’ve never read, so simple, sounds like something I’ve heard other people say a million times. But when he said it, I realized he was right. Going to read all of the Bible and see where it takes me. I grew up Mormon, and it kind of ruined my view of religion, norm has somewhat repaired my biases.

@McDingus360
@McDingus360 8 ай бұрын
@@kingambrosius9125 It has been interesting, for sure a slow process. There's so many parts of it that I find confusing, and I still have my skepticism. But like norm I have somewhat of an inclination toward a higher power. Some days I read it and some days I don't, I'm reading in chronological order, because I really want to grasp it. I am currently on Genesis 31. I remember when I read about the tower of babel I asked a question to my father about it, there was something I found confusing. After the conversation I realized he has likely never actually read the bible, just funny because it's the inverse of that norm quote, he's in the same situation I was in, just on the opposite side. I enjoy some parts of it, others I find strange. I'm not quite sure what I believe, but it's honestly a fun read. My dad always used to say that the book of mormon is much more fun to read than the bible, but after starting the bible I totally disagree. The historical context alone is worth the read. But I have no one to talk about it with. The religious side of my family is mormon, and it always circles back to that. The rest of my family are on the hippy spectrum, and they don't really see too much value in traditional religious concepts. Thank you for asking that question!

@@McDingus360 Good on you for making the attempt, at least. I would recommend that once you reach Leviticus, you pair your reading with Joshua onwards. Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and Numbers mainly deal with ceremonial procedures, which, while extremely important for understanding the shadows of Christ, do not make for exciting reading. So, if you pair them with the following books, it might make it easier for you. It may also help to pair 1 and 2 Chronicles with 1 and 2 Kings since they mostly overlap.

Norm had an extremely unusual God given gift of evangelism that he probably didn’t even realize he had. In his special way of influence influencing people with logic, sarcasm, and humor, I wonder if he’s unknowingly led more to souls Christ than most who pose the question, “Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?”
@CJ-lr4uq
@CJ-lr4uq Жыл бұрын
Probably, considering that "accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior" doesn't save anyone. Believing the Gospel is what saves a person.
@moldyshishkabob

@@CJ-lr4uq It's semantics, but even the demons know and believe that the Gospel is true. I'm certain there are people who believe that the Gospel can save, but to surrender to Christ means giving up the glory they gather for themselves in this life.
@CJ-lr4uq
@CJ-lr4uq Жыл бұрын
@moldyshishkabob uh, no. It doesn't say the demons believe the Gospel, the verse states that they believe there is one God. Believing in one God doesn't save, believing the Gospel does. And demons can't believe the Gospel because Jesus did not die for demons. Please actually read the Bible before you go around misquoting it and spreading misinformation. These are peoples' souls we're talking about here. When you do get around to actually reading the Bible, you'll find that nowhere does it state that "surrendering glory to Jesus Christ" is a requirement to save a person. It does however state time and time again to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. Believe that He died, was buried and rose again on the third day so that you could be forgiven and have eternal life. That's it. Now I can already tell that you are a faith+works backloader, and that you have a false Gospel. No one can be argued into the truth; it's a heart issue. You'll figure it out on your own at some point, hopefully before it's too late. And before you start mindlessly vomiting up scriptures out of context that you think declare a person must do certain works to be saved, spare me. I've heard them all. I'm not concerned with what you can fabricate through twisting scripture, I'm concerned with what God's Word actually tells us in its entirety.
@moldyshishkabob
@moldyshishkabob Жыл бұрын
@@CJ-lr4uq The Gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for the sins of all mankind. The Gospel is the good news that belief in Jesus Christ leads to His eternal kingdom. Of course the demons believe the Gospel, they obey Jesus when he rebukes them and casts them out of people. They recognize His authority and know His power. They know God's saving power but, in their pride, want to yank people away from Him. They know God can and will destroy them in time, but will take everyone they can with them. They certainly have an understanding of the Gospel and believe that, yes, Jesus Christ saves. But they decided to rebel and not have fealty to God.
@CJ-lr4uq
@CJ-lr4uq Жыл бұрын
@moldyshishkabob The point is, you're using that passage to insinuate that believing the Gospel is not enough save a person, and that is tragically wrong. It is the one and only requirement to be saved. Nothing more, nothing less.

Jesus says he is life itself. _"I_ am the resurrection and the _life._ Whoever believes in _me_ will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in _me_ will never die." (John 11:25-26) Jesus says he will give rest to your soul. "Come to _me,_ all you who are weary and burdened, and _I_ will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30) Jesus says he will quench your spiritual thirst. "Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, 'Let anyone who is thirsty come to _me_ and drink. Whoever believes in _me, as Scripture has said,_ rivers of living water will flow from within them.' By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in _him_ were later to receive." @@mynameis......23 God bless! Thank you for your comments. Here are some catholic sources debunking transubstantiation: Clement of Alexandria said the wine is "the SYMBOL of the sacred blood" _(The Instructor,_ 2.2). Theodoret said of the bread, "[Christ] broke the SYMBOL and distributed it" _(To the Monks of Constantinople)._ Origen called the bread "a SYMBOL of gratitude to God" _(Against Celsus,_ 8.57). Cyprian said the wine "REPRESENTS the Blood of Christ" (Epistle 63:7). Eusebius of Caesarea called the wine "the SYMBOL of [Christ's] blood," and the bread "the SYMBOL of His body" _(Demonstratia Evangelica,_ 8.1.76-80). Augustine explained Jesus' words, "Understand SPIRITUALLY what I said; you are NOT to eat this body which you see; nor to drink that blood which they who will crucify me shall pour forth ... Although it is needful that this be visibly celebrated, yet it must be SPIRITUALLY understood" _(Exposition of the Psalms,_ 99.8). He said plainly that the bread is NOT Christ's body, and the wine is NOT his blood. Augustine said of John 6, “If [Jesus'] command...seems to enjoin [encourage] a crime or vice ... IT IS FIGURATIVE. ‘Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man,’ says Christ, ‘and drink His blood, ye have no life in you.’ This seems to enjoin [encourage] a crime or a vice; IT IS THEREFORE A FIGURE [SYMBOL], enjoining that we should have a share in the sufferings of our Lord, and that we should retain a sweet and profitable MEMORY of the fact that His flesh was wounded and crucified for us" _(On Christian Doctrine,_ 3:16:24). He said that, since Jesus appeared to be encouraging cannibalism (a crime), he must have been speaking symbolically. Athanasius said, "What [Christ] says is NOT FLESHLY but spiritual. For how many would the body suffice for eating, that it should become the food for the whole world? But for this reason He made mention of the ascension of the Son of Man into heaven, in order that He might DRAW THEM AWAY FROM THE BODILY NOTION" (Festal Letter, 4.19). He said the bread cannot be Christ's body because there wouldn't be enough to feed everyone.

No, that idea is not only compatible with Christianity but is the main idea of it. St. Athanasius said "God became Man that Man might become God." And if you recoil at that you should know St. Athanasius is also the great champion of the Trinitarian doctrine against the Arian heresy. St Paul says "Do you not know that we will judge angels?"the devils lie was not that we could become divine because that is God's plan for us. The lie was that we could do it apart from God

With that said, we also remain distinct from God despite truly participating in Him. This is not pantheism. Recommend looking into St Gregory Palamas and the essence/energy distinction

@@christinemclatchie for centuries there was no Bible, only the Church. St. Athanasius was defending the Trinity centuries before the canon of scripture was established. What "so called" saints have written includes the Bible's table of contents.

As for Sam Kinison, I do believe he found his way towards the end of his life. As he was dying, he is said to have had a conversation with someone that no one else could see, where he indicated he understood.

So is my understanding correct that you used to have a channel that got taken down?

No, he gifted it to Hatun Tash. There is his videos still there where he explains his position and removed most of the videos. Part of it was being unbanable and not wasting time on policy violation appeals It seems that he is posting general apologetics videos himself but maybe is having other people post his Islam videos to avoid the Trust and Safety Team's anger.

The old channel is still up, David gave it to Hatun Tash. What happened is that he decided to leave his old channel and start over with several other ones, to be able to continue creating videos without constantly having to dodge strikes and the likely possibility of KZbin deleting his channel for good because of triggered Muslims.

David Wood. Keep up the great work for what we know is actually true. Jesus was a reality teacher - he taught what is real. And it wasn't just the things we can see, feel, hear, taste, touch and smell. Jesus taught about another reality that is absolutely real but that cannot be perceived with our limited human senses. Thank you David for all that you are doing for the truth.

The fact that so many people think Norm McDonald was a saved Christian is laughable, not once did I hear him say that Jesus Christ is the son of the living GOD, nor have I heard of his baptism by immersion, but the conversations and things he talked about were worldly and vile. I am literally at a loss for words on how far we have fallen, and how many people claim to be Christians yet are no different from the world... God Help Us

I’ve been struggling with these idea recently……..I have been finding myself drawn to the religion of my birth….after years of being dead against it I’ve been talking in my mind to god ….opening myself up to the idea anew Thinking about the image of Christ on the cross and what it says about how to really live How we should be giving our efforts to make a kingdom of heaven on earth….not to just fill our pockets with money to buy trinkets for ourselves We have the tools the resources and the knowledge to make a heaven of earth And we should be doing this even if it means sacrificing ourselves for the good of others But we don’t look at the behaviour of our governments, our corporations, our banks Look at the behaviour of inner city youth…..that would kill to own this self same trinkets of the rich It is heartbreaking and futile

With all respect, and not trying to discourage you on your walk… but the new heavens and earth doesn’t come until the end of the story. We are called to be stewards and a blessing to all around us, but much evil has been done in the name of building the Kingdom before the King returns. In an important sense - in my understanding FWIW - the Kingdom for now is ‘the church’ / the people who “have their lives irradiated by God” and who first and foremost live their lives according to Christ’s example, teaching and command (like the one not to lord-it-over one another). Anyway, sorry if that was a little rambly I hope it made some sense. Prayers are with you

Praying for you. While we can't get Heaven on this earth, we are very much supposed to do what we can for others and bring them to Christ as well. Keep seeking Christ, you will not regret it! Keep praying and reading everyday, and attend a Church an dget baptised, and you will find peace and love in Him!

Norm was no Saint. His down and dirty humor could make a criminal cringe. It appears to me he lived a muti faceted life. I don't know about his religion, but he seemed to have a beautiful heart . My son met him, and he treated him so sweetly. I miss that guy. If I ever run into him, I'll invite him over for a chicken.

I always loved Norm...and i fully believe God did too. Probably the best comedian ever, even by other comedians standards, and i loved his vast intelligence and more than anything, the fact that he seemed to never give any f*cks. Love when he was a judge on the one show, America's Got Talent or something like it and a gay comedian made jokes about the Bible and Christians...something everyone does as we have been chosen as the 1 faith it's okay to make fun of...and he straight told him he was funny, didnt like him and ripped him for making fun of an entire religion without knowing a damn thing about it.
