The Comeng Scrapping Process

Sad to see the Comeng trains all being withdrawn and scrapped slowly but surely. Ironically ten years ago I used to get annoyed whenever I got a Comeng and not a newer train whenever I was using the network, before I knew much about all things related to trains in Melbourne. Funny how times have changed lol. I just hope they keep a handful of carriages for preservation purposes and maybe even to run occasional shuttles with in the future like the Tait train.

I'm currently living in Sydney for a few years. I feel the same way about the K Sets here. There's only a handful left, and they're only used during peak periods on business days. They look like crap both inside and outside. Plus, they're noisy and uncomfortable. Yet it's oddly satisfying when being able to catch the rare ride.

I didn't get a chance to ride a K set when I was up in Sydney for a week a year ago, and it looks like they may be retired quite soon so I hope I manage to get a ride next time I'm up, whenever that is. Also really want to ride a V set because I imagine they'd be close to retirement and potential scrapping too.

Great video! It really pains me to see the Comeng fleet being scrapped. I just really like Comengs. It's a shame they're not being sold... it would be cool to go to somewhere like Easey's but with Comengs some time in the future.

Really nice video. Quite sad to these trains go. Even as an interstate enthusiast, I have a huge appreciation for the Comeng fleet, and can't wait to see the remaining fleet in service when I fly down in January.

Also in Sydney for K set, V set and T set heading for retirement and potential scrapping. A Series in Perth also heading for withdrawn from service and potential scrapping or sale for farm shed like Melbourne Hitachi trains and W Class trams

Great video, very nice footage. I think its sad that they decided to scrap 314M, it was one of my favorites. If it were up to me, I would have 314M preserved.

Front firbreglass only appears to be stripped at North Bendigo, the other cars are sent to the scrap heap with the fronts intact.

Very odd way of doing things, SSR taking the Comeng sets from Melbourne to Bendigo by rail transfer only to have the shell hauled back to Melbourne by road? Not very cost effective? Great video, did they sell any Comeng sets (like the Hitachi sets) to the private sector?

In Hong Kong we scrapped like 29 Metro Cammell EMUs which are all of them. We remove the pantographs and put them inside the train, then at the marshalling yard we remove a window on each side and the window panels, then cut two seats in half and then remove ceiling parts, then saw the roof in, shave off the insulation and then cut the carriage in half, as well as cutting all electrical systems that run through in half. They cut the carriage in half because the carriages are 23 meters, as well as keeping all the doors AC intact and on the train because all their parts that have serviced for 40 years are going to the scrapyard. They put a green cover on them aswell. Scania and Mercedes Benz Actros trucks are used for scrapping.

The windows that are removed are probably used to replace scratched/broken windows on the trains that are still in service! :)

So that was the 314M scrap video and I think their could be a chance that the after the metal of a scraped comeng could be sent to China to the HCMT so that means that even after all of them are scraped it is still possible to ride one

The one in Laverton North is Infra Build recycling in Fitzgerald Rd not sure about the others.

Its so incredibly sad watching the trains I grew up with and rode in countless times being banished into oblivion. They have a unique character about them that I love and have been an iconic part of Melbourne for so long. The newer stuff like hcmt is just bland generic garbage which is about as interesting as watching paint dry. My enthusiasm for Melbourne trains will die when the last Comeng set is retired.

The saloon interiors, passenger information systems and general passenger comfort is good. The Comeng traction power system is inefficient and regeneration is unavailable.

They finished all the Stage 1s and started with Stage 2s which is why some with the closed gangway have been scrapped already
