You two were glowing with that gorgeous arrangement of flowers behind you! Anne is such a universal book. Tonight as I walked with my elderly neighbor she told me she read it in Poland during some very dark days. It was a favorite of her childhood. I love how this little girl can unite us though space and time from the pen if a gifted writer.

You both look so beautiful today! I’ve been looking forward to this month’s read and discussion. Anne of GG is my absolute favorite book of all time. And at age 61, I’ve read it so many times. I love the series so much. I’m so fortunate and so excited to be planning a trip to PEI in late May this year. It’s an anniversary present from my husband. We will be driving from Tennessee to PEI for everything Anne and also plan to visit Nova Scotia. On our way home we are stopping in Concord, MA to visit Orchard House where Louisa May Alcott wrote Little Women, another favorite of mine. Im so thankful for your channel Miranda. I feel like I’m sitting in the room with you and Donna. You are both such “kindred spirits” and I always look forward to your videos!

Such a cozy, thoughtful discussion of this classic! I enjoyed your analysis of how physical space-particularly, Anne’s bedroom-reflects the gradual thawing and growing intimacy in the Cuthbert home, and even hints of Anne’s romance to come. And Eriko’s comment especially spoke to me, as I recently read this book to my 9-year-old daughter, who took it rather hard when Anne started growing up and became less prone to imaginative escapades. I told her something similar to what Eriko, Donna, and Miranda say in this discussion: we’re never too old for a sense of wonder and imagination, that although we become more wise about the world, we never have to outgrow our childlike sense of awe and adventure.

Thank you Miranda and Donna, I have enjoyed your discussion on Anne of Green Gables which is very interesting. I hadn't realized that the author had had such a sad childhood, she was cared for so well and her grandmother helped her to become a writer by educating her well, yet her childhood seemed so lacking in love. Those were indeed hard times for children to lose their parents and to be brought up by their relations. I remember the book Pollyanna about an orphan girl who had very optimistic views about everything! What I love about Anne of Green Gables is just how beautifully it is written, it really does just transport me to Avonlea in the Spring and I too am full of the wonder of this wonderful place!

Dear Miranda and Donna, thank you very much for this lovely and lively discussion. I love the new format very much. I agree a lot with your comments on Marilla. When I was young I didn't like her too much, but this time I could understand her much better. There is a book by Sarah McCoy it's called "Marilla of Green Gables" and is set before Anne of GG starts. Do you know it? I wish both of you a very happy week, you look very beautiful!❤❤

Hello Miranda and Donna. This was another wonderful discussion. I had read this book as a young girl and, of course, loved Anne and her way of looking at her world. However, reading this again as an adult was so much more rewarding. The women were so influential and the relationships played such a huge part of this book. Being older I now recognize how important female friendships can be so much deeper and necessary. L.M. Montgomery has taught her readers so many life lessons. Thank you for choosing this amazing read. 🌸

Thank you Miranda, Donna and everyone for a great discussion! Fun fact: I read from my childhood edition ( that is falling apart) and noticed that my enjoyment was increased incredibly by that. It was a comforting and nostalgic experience. From now on, when we read a " childhood classic", I'll read from my own childhood stash if I have the book instead of opting to buy a new, more beautiful edition.

Hi Miranda and Donna! I really enjoyed this chat! I was looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Last year I read "Anne of Green Gables' to my young son and he loved it...up until he began to suspect that a major character dies and then emphatically made me stop...he just didn't want to know who it was or anything further. I had not expected him to be so moved and so personally engaged with the characters to create that reaction. It shows what a good writer L.M. Montgomery is to be able to engage readers of so many different ages. "Anne" taught me to find joy in the small and everyday beauties all around us and helped me to understand other people better. I agree that Marilla's transformation is one of the most endearing parts of the book. Thank you for another wonderful book conversation! 🥰

Anne of Green Gables has been an absolute favourite since my girlhood. I love LMM's nature descriptions, and I think it was her dreamy Anne who helped me to develop my own imagination and learn how to pay attention to the world around me. I so enjoyed the discussion. Absolutely loved your discussion of a beloved book of mine. I’ve read the Anne books countless times, they were such a joy and comfort to me as a child - I felt Anne and I truly were kindred spirits and she was a real friend. I find Anne’s optimism, positivity, warmth, love of nature and her interest in people so inspiring. The books are so beautifully written they are just as much of a pleasure to read as an adult, although as you were saying, I notice Marilla’s story so much more now, and find her love for Anne so touching, and I also feel so much more the sadness of Anne’s early life. I am inspired to follow your example, Miranda, and read my way right through the series again. Rilla of Ingleside is one of my very favourites in the series, and definitely requires a box of tissues as Donna says! Thank you both for a wonderful watch!

What a perfect choice. I've read this book so many times I feel as if it must be part of my DNA by now. It's so timeless. I loved the way you said it helped make you what you are... I've read all the other Anne books and most of L.M. Montgomery's other books and short stories, but this is the one that started it all for me.

What a special and interesting discussion about Anne of Green Gables. It has long been a favourite of mine, along with the rest of the series. My two favourites, after Anne of GG, are Rainbow Valley and Rilla of Ingleside. Hearing about L. M. Montgomery' childhood was fascinating, clearly much of Anne was inspired by her own story, and I did immediately think that Matthew had to be the grandfather that L. M. Montgomery would have longed for, rather than the stern and formidable one that she actually had. On this reread I found myself appreciating Marilla much more, and the way her character softens as she grows to love Anne. I smiled often at Anne's wildly dramatic reactions, and Marilla's much more prosaic responses. Thanks for choosing 'Anne' for us to read for the CBC.

That was fun, thank you. I was a polite, well behaved little girl, I just used to talk a lot, I didn't realize how much till my parents digitized some of the films they took of us when we were little. My tiny little mouth never stopped. LOL . I learned to swim very young and I used to spend a lot of time underwater pretending I was mermaid. That kind of stuff, very innocent. I think Anne is a lot like that, she was an innocent child who just wanted to be loved. I have gone on to the next book and I am finding it very interesting that she and her friends were all teaching so very young. Another new book for me, thanks. I have another LM Montgomery book to read, (that I have never read before,) The Blue Castle. I am going to read it after I finish the Anne books.

Hello Miranda and Donna, Thank you for this lovely video. Anne of Green Gables has been a favourite of mine for many many years. I love her imaginative outlook on life. Although I live on the very opposite coast of Canada, I've visited the National Park Site of Green Gables twice, once just last summer. Besides the house of Montgomery's relatives that inspired Green Gables, I was able to visit the homesite where L.M. Montgomery's grandparents raised her and the church she attended and where her funeral was held. My husband and I wandered through Lover's Lane and the Haunted Wood and I chattered away in Anne's style explaining everything to him. I also love Montgomery's book The Blue Castle. Have you read it?

Your comment about the poetry being in school readers was interesting. I hadn't made that connection, though I am Canadian and happen to have in my possession an old Canadian school reader that my grandmother, who had been a teacher in a one-room school house on the Canadian prairies, had given me, which contains both 'The Lady of Shalott' and 'The Highwayman'. Thank you for this insight, which has further enriched my appreciation for this Canadian classic and personal favourite.

I work as a school librarian, and six months ago we had a very enjoyable visit from author Jennifer Killick. She said something in her talk that really stuck with me: if you ever come across an adult who's really boring, it's probably because they've forgotten how to use their imagination. This has really stuck with me, and I kept thanking of it throughout Anne of Green Gables, as Anne's imagination is so central to the book.

I absolutely loved this book and can’t really believe I never read it. Loved the discussion between the two of you this morning and then hearing the readers. This book has made my heart very warm and comforted remembering my childhood. My parents were quite old when I was born - I felt like an only child as my siblings were much older than me. Again, I love your hairstyle Miranda. Donna yours is so nice too, shows of your beautiful face. Donna, you have a happy and very sweet face! What a duo!!🤗 My family and I visited P.E.I. one summer, specifically because of The Anne Bks. Oh! I hope you get there sometime. Many yrs. ago before there was a bridge connected to the island. The dirt there is REALLY red! Even on the shores.L.M.Montgomery has to be the, or one of the most descriptive writers I know. Just wonderful. I think my favorite scene in the movie is when Anne and Matthew are driving to G.G. and go through "the White Way of Delight"! Breathtaking! People my whole life have told me I have quite the imagination. When my granddaughter was a toddler and older, I use to make up stories for her. They just came out as I went along. When she was 13/14 yrs. old, she said to me, " Nana, you have imagination like Anne Of Green Gables." No better compliment and I will always treasure that. Now she is 18 and we discuss books.🤗 Thank you both so much for this discussion, interesting and fun. Thank you for choosing Anne!

I'm loving your hair a wee bit shorter Miranda, it suits you. Also your dear mum Donna's hair suits her shorter too 😊 I think you have found a gem of a hairdresser in Boroughbridge. Our daughter-in-law & her family live there, It's such a beautiful market town xx

A bit late to this, but this discussion is not only lovely, but really smart and the two of you engage in some really astute analysis...Ive read Anne of Green Gables many times, but your POV is leading me to read it again

Great discussion! I wish I had read it as a child, but I'm reading the series as a thirty something woman. I was worried that writing would be too simple and I wouldn't appreciate it, but actually, though its still a simple writing style, its so descriptive and immersive to read.

(Melanie) Donna, your haircut is cute! You both look beautiful, as always. I like this format - with you both discussing the book beforehand. SO many good quotes in Anne of Green Gables. A wonderful book for close reading with a Commonplace book on hand.

I can see Anne of Green Gables character in the film "Annie" the plucky red headed 10 year old orphan girl.

Please tell me if I have Mum Donna's saying correct: "She'd talk a high leg off a donkey" ... is that accurate? I have never heard it before.
