That's a topic I hope to make a series of videos about at some point. I'm of the opinion that it is better to follow the works of writers than specific characters. But if you are just starting out, you need to figure out your personal taste first. So I would tell you to choose a character or team you feel particularly curious about and read either a few selected stories of an author's run. Even if you want to read multiple series, it's still better to start with one and gradually expand. For the X-Men, you could read either the 1975 reboot that would lead you to Dark Phoenix Saga or the new Jonathan Hickman phase that started in 2019. For Spider-Man, you could read the Stan Lee-John Romita run from the 60s up until The Death of Gwen Stacy, or you could read Dan Slott's recent run starting with Big Time. For Daredevil, there's Frank Miller's 1980s run or Brian Michael Bendis 2001 run. Both amazing. For the Avengers, you could try Jim Shooter's Korvac Saga from the 70s, Roger Stern's run from the 80s, or start with Bendis' Avengers Disassembled and House of M and see where it takes you. To recommend a story that would apply to the whole Marvel Universe is more complicated. "Marvels", by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross, comes to mind. You might miss a few references, but it's a great introduction. Gun to my head, i'd suggest you read Avnegres Disassembled, which would lead to New Avengers v1. New Avengers will serve as mainline for events like House of M, Civil War, Secret Invasion, Siege and beyond. It's old enough that there's a lot of material, but not old enough that the writing might feel dated. Man, that was a long answer. Hope it wasn't too confusing. If you are interested in a character I didn't mention, let me know.

There’s a podcast I’ve been listening to for a few months called my marvelous year that goes year by year through marvel comics. I’ve been enjoying it so if you would like something like that, check it out

Got it so more bad runs than good run. Shame he's the one who got me in the comic books but my god he's left a worst mark on it

I wouldn’t say more bad than good. I think, even at his worst, Bendis is better than a lot of writers out there, but I see three phases in him… the early independent stuff from the 1990s that he often both wrote and drew - he’s not much of an artist but nobody writes better dialogue… his early Marvel years, the 2000s, with a style that was still fresh and innovative… and the last 15 years or so when he started to rely too much on repeating his formula from past works… unfortunately, it happens to most writers. Frank Miller hasn’t produced something decent in decades, but he still ranks among comics’ greatest. Bendis might be going on a similar path

I personally think Bendis is overrated. His word balloons are ridiculously long usually having characters say the same thing over and over. He also has a tendency to retcon the histories of certain characters for the sake of his stories and ruin said character In the process. Look what he did to Scarlet Witch. He turned her insane for no good reason, had her kill off half the Avengers just to make way for his fan fiction version months later. It was a huge middle finger to Avengers fans. And do not get me started on what he did to Superman and his family.

I’ll agree that his Superman wasn’t great, and his storytelling does have its vices. But I personally love his dialogues. They feel more authentic than what you usually see in comics. I also disagree about the Scarlet Witch. Just read John Byrne’s West Coast Avengers to see Bendis’ inspiration. While his New Avengers did have a lot of fan service, remember that it came at a time when Marvel was struggling, downsizing, basically trying to stay alive. Shaking things up was as much a necessity as it was a choice. But I’ll concede that his style is not for everyone.

@@comicbelief There was better ways to save Avebgers without killing off half the roster for cheap shock value. also Wanda accepted that her children weren't real and tried her best to move on, no matter how painful it was. But thanks to Bendis, she completely forgot and went insane. It screwed up her character and she never truly recovered but that's just my opinion.
