A new retrospective channel subscriber / retro gamer from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮. I can honestly inform, that it's great to see many people still playing the retrospective games - especially of the Commodore 64 and Amiga - on the original hardwares 😺👍🕹️. I also play the original hardwares of the Commodore 64 (tapes / disks / cartridges ) and Amiga 500 😺👍🕹️. And this channel deserves a big retrospective like 👍🕹️. Thank you 😸😺👍.

I absolutely loved my C64. One Christmas my mom bought me a 300 baud modem and I thought I was in heaven. Only 2 hours to download a program from the local BBS? Wow! But after a year of that I was pulling my hair out. So I begged my mom for the latest modem: a 1200 baud one. Wow (again)! My friend Jeff and I would "try out" (ahem!) the latest wares from the local BBS and about 80% of the time they'd work... Still, I have very fond memories of the old breadbox. Tons of great games. My friend's mom was a work-at-home medical transcriber and she continued to use her C64 well beyond the time the PC world had taken over that kind of thing. Why? Because it worked perfectly fine for her particular use.

I'm sure lots of people have very fond memories of their C64 machines. Thanks for sharing those memories.

First post!!!! I still have my C64 breadbox which I used for the early part of high school, and I recently bought a C128D which I always wanted. I blew the SID on it right away, and I've got an ARM SID ready to replace it. I recently bought a Sidewinder 64 which launches software instantly and allows for multi SIDs. Int Soccer was pack in, which I played to death. Hold. on. Didn't I just watch this video a few weeks ago?

Yes, you did. When I started this refresh project I was just going to improve the audio only. I was about 10 videos through when I discovered I could also remaster much of the imagery as well. So I've had to remaster (and upload again) those 10 or so I'd already done. I wanted to do it quietly without notification to subscribers. In fact I even unticked the option to let subscribers know. For some reason KZbin does let people know regardless? I'm not sure why.

I've setup a Commodore 64 in our house, and put a bunch of classic games on a couple of packs of blank floppies (thanks to the awesome pi1541 project). I'm having some great bonding time with my 8 year old son, where we're checking out the games I have one by one. His favourite so far is two player Bubble Bobble. He's fascinated by the physical disks and likes being the one to put them in and out of the 1541 drive - though he's happy to leave me with the LOAD commands. My older two kids think it's all pretty lame though and aren't interested at all. Though my eldest son like's the PC remake of Wizball so credit where credit's due.

That's cool. One thing lost in modern computing is the physical manifestation of something being done (cassettes turning, disks spinning). These add to the vintage experience.

@@tezzaNZ Absolutely. When that 1541 is loading, it doesn't feel as long as it should because you can hear it working. If it were just silence it would feel like an eternity. That's what I like about the VICE emulator. It makes a 1541 sound when loading virtual disks.

You can bypass all the adapters if you have a 1581 drive. I bought one of these as a kid and still owned it when all the disk images started to become available. Using star commander, I would create a 1581 image and copy all the game files to the image. There was a piece of DOS software that could write a 1581 image directly to a standard 3.5" disk drive with a DS/DD (720k) disk. The only downside was the 1581 drive doesn't work with most fast load cartridges and will lock up both the computer and drive. . Though, if you have one that is compatible, it is way faster than even the best cartridge and the 1541. It can load a 220 block game (over 50k) in about 6 seconds. Unlike the 1571 drive, which cannot use double sided disks when connected to a 64 or a 128 in 64 mode , the entire capacity of the 1581 is available on either a 64 or a 128 in 64 mode. IIRC, it's like 1600 blocks vs the 5 hundred something on a 1541

4:50 If you haven't already done so, you should rebuild your C64 power supply. It is known to fail and when it does, it fails in such a way that dumps high voltage on the custom chips and kills them. You can get a modern replacement, but the fix for the old ones is easy, cheap and just standard electronic parts that are widely available. Plus, you get to retain the original commodore one and not have a generic looking replacement. Though, to be honest, I don't know if this issue affects the British version. It may or may not.

Yes, I am aware of this issue. I have a little testing adaptor which I've wired up to test the PSU if I haven't turned it on for some time. I've been thinking about getting the modern replacement though.

tbh most people really dont care if the video quality is bad on youtube.

These videos are entertainment and in that regard, yes I agree with you. But they’re also what might one day be considered a documentation of history for an archive. Terry gives history and perspective of each machine, before showing the insides and outsides (ports etc). He often flips through manuals and shows examples of some popular software.

Yes, one of the considerations in my mind is that new people (not just my subscribers from 2013-2014), and younger people may continue to stumble across these videos. The production values were pretty embarrassing but I felt the content held up ok as part of the historical record.
