Hot glue (and most simple glues) needs some texture to grab on to. It can't grab smooth metal, as evidenced by how easy they just keep peeling it off. It is for things like cardboard, wood, fabric where it can seep into the fibers and hold on. To glue smooth surfaces, you need something that chemically bonds, like epoxy.

That's an idea, but I've owned a couple of tower fans, but to clean them you have to take them apart with 20+ screws depending on the model, and a bunch of plastic clips pulling them in 1/2, which is a true pain in the ass for what amounts to less cooling than a basic 12in oscillating floor fan that can be cleaned in just a few minutes with less than a handful of screws to remove if you want to take it down to the motor for serious cleaning.

I guessing they used glue to not have exposed screws, but I'm guessing they also forgot about magnets. Lol

For such a skinny case... I'd be afraid of putting a magnet too close to any part of the PC that doesn't appreciate being near a magnet.

As a mechanical designer, the glue is a good idea to keep costs down and it's not the problem. The issue is with the surface treatment and coating of the aluminum that they didn't have (not the correct one)...

How to improve the front/cover for the case: a) use snap on mechanism and get rid of the glue ala PS5, b) have the power button near the base of the case, not the top, c) have mesh on the side as well for even more cooling

The case and the concept is awesome! Even with all the things that went wrong, I don’t mind at all… engineering mechanical things is hard, we take it for granted… having done similar prototypes for robotic systems, the prices get extremely steep when working with low volume parts that include multiple operations…. The price they gave is reasonable for now… they are not trying fool us with the price

The problem with adhesive in aerospace is that you can't properly validate the strength of the bond so it's rarely used for critical structural applications. The famous Aloha airlines accident where the airplane turned into a convertible was actually because of an adhesive failure. They used adhesive to reduce the stress concentration on the rivets connecting two fuselage sections but the adhesive failed causing the rivets to get a higher load than intended leading to failure.

Hot glue is well known to bound two metal plates together. Especially on smooth surfaces, aka without using sandpaper prior. It can also withstand heat from the computer with no issue. That's why it's called hot glue after all. Keep going.

Instead of hot glue, look at automotive trim adhesive. It's a tape which makes it easier to use and sticks really well.

When using hot-glue: make a puddle, so it doesnt loose its heat as quickly - especially when glueing metal. metal makes it loose heat so qiockly that it doesnt get to really bond with the material (thats also a neat trick if you want something to be able to get the glue off of easily as well)

Would be so much nicer if that side-panel could be kept on with magnets. Tip btw: When putting hotglue on metal the heat will sink into the metal very quickly and the glue will set within seconds, so if you take 30 seconds to put the side panel back on it's more or less set already. If you really want to make something like that permanent, neutral cure silicone or VHB tape would have worked easier... or VHB backed velcro 🙂

I’d really like them to design this so you could lay it flat as well. Or offer a version made for that. Since the closed side doesn’t have any ventilation I would think that would just work. You could have a sort of soundbar/monitor riser pc case. Also absolutely please do switch to screws or magnets for holding the sidepannel on. Glue is something I want to see as little as possible of in final products. It’s bad for repairability, recycling, reliability, everything pretty much. Magnets would look just as clean or screws would just do the job better if that’s to expensive to add.
