I think other people put it best where I've seen, so I wanna say it here: I think the lesson from Spider-Man: Lotus is that creating a piece of art purely and only based on spite is a terrible idea. Now granted there are cases where artists do want to make rebuttals or secret middle fingers to other people or pieces of art they didn't like such as with Paul Verhoven's take on Starship Troopers. BUT first of all directors like Verhoven usually know what they're doing AND the middle-finger isn't the only point there. The point was to make a passionate and meaningful satire and tell his audience that jingoistic fascistic governments are terrible ideas. Lotus seems to be all about a man wanting to seem special by crapping all over Webb and Watts's attempts, but he doesn't seem to have a drive other than that. It's covered in references to what he seems to think is "real Spider-Man" but it's clear from the direction, technical failings, and execution that there was little to it than that. I'm reminded of this artist I see from time to time who does fanart of his own designs of She-Ra using the Dreamworks style that's also a crossover with Star Wars. Now, I think a She-Ra meets Star Wars story sounds like it can be awesome, but the stories he's putting out aren't that unique, and a lot of the attention seems to be how he's shipping his male OC's with Adora and Catra. And then I saw him and other social media posts and he says he thinks it's awful that they "changed" Adora and Catra's sexualities. I think there's similarities with that and Lotus. It's an artist who has potential and resources at his hand to make something unique and meaningful, but it's all wasted just to spite the diversity and LGBTQIA love letter that is the reboot he hates. And ironically, both of them miss the point of the franchise. Gavin doesn't seem to get why Peter Parker picking himself in his stories is so engaging, and this artist I see doesn't seem to understand Masters of the Universe has always been a big symbol of gay fantasy since it began in the eighties. Bottom line, if you're going to make a fan film or fanfic just do it because you want to do it. Because you're passionate about something other than hatred for how other people did it. My dream would be to make an Indiana Jones and Carmen Sandiego team up adventure movie series, but I would want to do that because I really do love both characters and think the two of them together can explore great themes and complex ideas together. I would never make it because I want to get revenge on Kingdom of the Crystal Skull or whatever.

I'm gonna pin this because it's really well written, but also feels like a response to a lot of comments I've gotten defending the movie and calling me a hater. Of course I hate Lotus. @@ChimeraFilms My second video essay I'm working on as of now is about the 1998 Tri-Star Godzilla remake, and originally, my third was gonna be an analysis of King Kong the game and Aliens: Colonial Marines, but now, I think all this stuff about Lotus and the deeper and bigger messages it says about fan culture in general will be my third instead. I also wanna try and gage with how Gavin's yikesy beliefs shape the approach and framing of this movie. This doesn't get brought up too much, but if another set of his DM's that leaked are also real, he said a lot of misogynistic stuff regarding his actresses. Blaming them and their inability to do what men can do on why stuff was going wrong. And I think having that in mind while looking at how he allows Peter to treat MJ in this film, and MJ at the end is just okay with it is very telling.

I felt like the flash back sequences on peters laptop looked more interesting than what was actually going on in the movie. MJ and Harry kinda carried the movie for me mostly, and I think a conversation (lets pretend MJ knows hes spider-man or finds out) with MJ helping Peter to decide to see the kid and act happy and Tim seeing somethings off about Spider-Man and the both of them helping eachother through their fear would be nice. Trim down 30-40 minutes. I agree that the aesthetic was all over the place. Having green colours whenever Harry was on screen was very on the nose and not subtle at all. Also I 100% understand why the costuming for Peter, Gwen and in lesser exstent Harry felt like it was vintage and from the 70s, it's because that's what they wore in those comics and I guess it was his way of paying homage to them but it really does come off as very fan-service-y which I normally don't mind if it's done in the right way. Also the tape recorder was what Peter used as a message to Gwen in "Spider-Man Blue" by Jeph Loeb which this is heavily based on along with "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man" in the second half of the film but yeah, if GJK modernised it a bit, it would not have felt dated.

In comics that's EXACTLY what happens. Harry had an addiction prior due to wanting to fit in with the jocks, and the loss of gwen and his father made him worse, eventually he ODs after figuring out his dad was the goblin and snaps. The fact this film didn't even HINT at something like this just wasted so much potential. If I was directing this movie, Harry's descent into the Green Goblin would have been the sub plot.

What I hate the most about this film (and certain hardcore Spider-man fans) is that they completely missed the point on why Spider-man is considered to be one on of the greatest superheroes of all time A lot of these fans think its cause of the tragedy and struggles Spider-man to the point where any story that focuses on his pain is the greatest character writing of all time. It's kinda creepy how much they focus and obsessed over it. But the real reason why Spider-man is so beloved is that despite the pain and loss he goes though, he still is compassionate, kind and dedicated to protecting people. He could've easily gave up after loosing Uncle Ben, Gwen or any other character, but he knew that it wouldn't be right for him or the people he loves. He still grieves over them, but he keeps moving forward and even eventually finds love again though MJ So it really annoys me when these fans missed this point and think in order to make Peter into a well developed character he needs to suffer and constantly be depressing to the point where they basically threw a temper tantrum whenever someone tries to do something different with the character and his story

When she talked to Harry she just says the most generic thing with no emotion. What really got on my nerve was when Peter compared MJ to Gwen and MJ just takes it. The MJ I know from any interaction would have clapped back and left Peter thinking, she would have actually helped peter grow from the past. MJ is not even a person she is a coin character. This is like if the CW did spiderman.

Spider-Man Lotus has set a standard for fan films on how not to make a fan film
@johncleaver5545 ай бұрын
"The opening credits of the movie last waaay too fucking long and do this really weird thing where they start pretty late in the movie, and they do a very short scene, and then the title card. Why? Why structure it like that?" It's because one of Gavin J. Konop's favorite films is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And he thought, "Oh, if that film can start their opening credits twenty minutes into the film, so can my film." But he failed to realize that the first twenty minutes of the film are Joel and Clementine rekindling their relationship, and we don't know about it until the end of the film. It had purpose in Eternal Sunshine, but not in Lotus.

I have a similar vibe to Cosmonaut Variety Hour,who also did an awesome tear down of this movie, in that even if I don’t like something in my franchise, I don’t like to say that I could do better than the pros who do this for a living. Because I’m not a filmmaker or writer, and even if I was, I probably would still suck somehow. Shame that Gavin couldn’t feel the same way, and that this whole thing was just him believing he could be much better than the professionals, nor did he realize that he wasn’t talented enough to make this attempt in the first place and did it anyway. Also, as a Spidey fanboy since being a toddler, I love all the Spider Man movies, especially the MCU Spider-Man.

The only good thing I can name about Spider-Man Lotus is that it helped me with my Insomnia: (Sleep Disorder). Tum on the movie, and I fall asleep in 5-10 minutes.

I really, *really* tried to look past the controversy surrounding this film and the fact that the cast and crew seems to be made up of *mostly* awful people, but as someone whose favorite fictional character is Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Miles being a close second since he’s *also* Spider-Man) it truly makes me beyond upset and frustrated that this fan film earned the kind of money it did to be made, just to be so wasted on this film. I love the Raimi trilogy. I love the Webb films. I love Watt’s trilogy and the roles Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has played in different Avengers films. I love the new animated series. I love spectacular Spider-Man. And I especially love Insomniac’s games. I don’t really discriminate when it comes to loving spidey media. Edit: forgot to mention that I also love the spider-verse films, of course. However, Lotus/Gavin *completely* shit on the character and what makes him so loved by many like me in the 1st place. I really wish this film didn’t exist. Thank you for coming to my TED talk

You know, I saw Channel Pup’s review on this movie and he brought up a point I really agree with, Gavin jumped into this too quickly. Like he’s a new filmmaker/director, right? This is the first movie he directed, right? Then maybe he shouldn’t have immediately made his dream project right off the bat, that almost feels like if I tried to make my dream/ideal Sonic, or Justice League, or Avengers game whenever I’ve never made a game in my life (that and if I did it out of spite towards Sega or Rocksteady (for KtJL) or Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics like “Oh they messed up with my favorite characters in the past, I’ll show them how it’s done, I can do better” even though no, I can’t, I can’t at all (and in Sega’s case that really wouldn’t make sense from me when, regardless of their screw ups in the past, Unleashed, Frontiers, SA2, and Generations are some of my favorite games so I wouldn’t get what would be going through my mind if I’m acting like IGN)), he should’ve done some smaller stuff before and then got to Lotus when he got more experience and maybe made Lotus what it could’ve been, good (or at least not boring as heck).

"So I think at this point, we're pretty far into the movie and I can officially say *that this movie's shit!* I don't understand why your dream Spider-Man movie is just an adaptation of the "Death of Gwen Stacy!" If I got a $100,000 to make a Spider-Man movie I would get fucking weird with it! I'd show things that haven't been shown before! Spider-Man is so rich with unique story opportunities and your dream movie is just one where he's sad that Gwen Stacy died? Again the idea was to make a movie that's comic book accurate; that's true to the character of Spider-Man. But I think the hunger for comic book accuracy has blinded Gavin. Because, yeah, the suit is comic accurate it looks great, the events in the story are comic book accurate, but when you peel off this surface level shit you are left with _no flavor!_ " ~ Cosmonaut Variety Hour

Fucking love that movie. Sure, the acting is over the top and wooden, there are times where the movie is so dark you have no idea what's happening, and comic dialog is just taken straight into the film without bothering to adapt it for the current circumstances. But my god, does that film have fucking heart. Many of the effects still hold up (especially the swinging), the suits are the fun kinda cheap but still very well designed, the actors are giving it their all, it has a bloody brutal battle at the end where you can just feel how much Spidey and Goblin hate each other and for a film made on $500 in 1992 it definitely overachieved in every aspect. The small demo trailer the same team made, where it showed clips of Spidey fighting diffrent villians (including a smug Bullseye) is also a pretty fun watch. Love that movie
@dn22pkkdd4769 ай бұрын
Oh, just wanted to add, the soundtrack has no business being as good as it is. And the Howard Jones song, Equality, that is used as the main theme is such a banger it's been stuck in my head since 1998.

Okay, the Rubix cube thing is actually alright. The problem is the green was leaned too far into it. A Rubix cube is to showcase intelligence and to aid in how a conversation is going. I can live with the symbolism. But they laid the green paint on Harry so thick. Then again of course Spider-Klan uses color for character profiling

Another recommendation if anyone wants another Spiderman fanfilm that ISN'T bad with the pacing, it's actually full of heart and actually commits to the message of responsibility that Spider-Man is all about there's this movie called "Spiderman Panopticon" it was made by Brazilian filmmakers and it's subbed in English, if you can stand reading the subtitles it's actually a really good movie!

One thing I don't get is that with a budget of 1$25,000 (according to google) they could've made their own Spidey film with their own villain, a story to remember with bright colours and some unique, memorable moments to come with the new- Nope. They just retold Gwen Stay's death... Just like non-fan made Spidey films.... Again... Which especially doesn't make it memorable. Idk where else to go with this other than like... If someone was to remake a Spidey comic as a movie, maybe do something like "Kraven's last hunt" or something that HASN'T been done in a Spidey movie before. Can't believe Gavin failed at the main thing he thought he was doing (and the entire reason the film exists).
