"Why Buddhism is True"
About this book
What this book will do is use modern scientific knowledge to try to explain some Buddhist concepts and viewpoints. These concepts and ideas are all things that have been stripped of the supernatural. There is no six paths of reincarnation, no karma, and no "supernatural powers" in this book. It basically treats the Buddha as an enlightened philosopher.
core content
There are many people in the United States studying Buddhism, and it can even be said that a complete system of Buddhism has been formed in the West. This system is roughly equivalent to removing all the "supernatural" elements from Asian Buddhism, leaving only the methodology of philosophy and meditation practice. This is roughly a set of "modernized" Buddhism.
Evolutionary psychology explanation of emotions:
During the course of evolution, humans have developed emotions towards things. This is due to natural selection, where we tend to view things that are good for spreading genes as good, and things that are bad for spreading genes as bad. This includes emotional reactions to things such as greed and hatred.
Limitations of natural selection:
The basic assumption of natural selection is that each individual is special and important, which leads people to always judge good or bad from the perspective of self-interest. However, this basic assumption is unreasonable across the biological world because it is impossible for every organism to be more important or special than every other organism.
The transcendence of Buddhism:
Buddhism is explained as a method beyond natural selection. The Buddha realized the limitations of natural selection on thought some 2,600 years ago and tried to liberate people's thinking. By recognizing the relativity and impermanence of all phenomena, people can transcend the limitations of self-interest and observe and experience the world from a higher level.
The idea that form is emptiness:
"Form is emptiness" in Buddhism expresses a relativistic view, that is, the value and essence of things are relative and depend on the perspective of the observer. This concept helps people transcend their inherent prejudices and recognize the complexity of the world.
Correspondence between modern science and Buddhism:
Modern science is believed to have rediscovered the questions raised by the Buddha 2,600 years ago, allowing people to use scientific methods to verify or corroborate the Buddha's thoughts. This provides people with the opportunity to study the Buddha's methods and understand the world within a scientific framework.
Overall, this perspective emphasizes Buddhist ways of thinking beyond natural selection and the confirmation of these thinking by modern science. This kind of cross-field thinking can provide people with different perspectives and promote a deeper understanding of themselves and the world.
