The concept of a "fourth shot" in pickleball is not as universally recognized or standardized as the first three shots (serve, return of serve, and third shot). However, some players and instructors use the term "fourth shot" to refer to the shot that comes after the third shot in certain specific situations or strategies.
A backhand roll in pickleball, also called backhand flick, is typically a dink volley that uses speed, spin, and power to catch an opponent off-guard. Used in dink rallies, the shot borrows techniques used in table tennis to achieve a topspin effect on the ball that's challenging to return.
The backhand roll is taken from a shot in the non-volley zone that comes in at about net height. It’s best used when the ball isn’t high enough for an overhead smash onto your opponent’s side of the court.
