The story of how the Downtown Line came to be (as well as the Circle Line and Thomson-East Coast Line) is a messy and complicated one. In this video, we will try to make sense of it all.

Love the series! Singapore's mrt history is actually much more complicated than most think. However, there was something bothering me. When walking somewhere around the CBD, a connection roughly between esplanade and city link exists. I may have false information, but I think I read somewhere that there was supposed to be a station there and you can still see what is possibly where the gantry would be. I have not been able to find evidence of it though. For those who wonder what am i talking about, there is a discreet walkway out of city link near a shop which I cannot remember If you walked down from one of the entances above, walked through this possible station and down an escalator, you will pop up in city link mall

There were also plans for an interchange between the Circle Line and another MRT line at Esplanade, thus the 2 separate concourses and 2 separate lifts with one for each concourse.

The another MRT line at Esplanade will now be Holland-Paya Lebar Line. It will go from Tengah, via Holland Road, Napier, Chatsworth, River Valley Road, Padang, Esplanade, Beach Road, Kampong Bugis, Kallang, Bidadari, Tai Seng, Kim Chuan, PLAB and all the way to Lorong Halus. 1. It was originally Thomson Line but the government wanted to save cost after Nicoll Highway collapse so Thomson Line merged with the southern part of Eastern Region Line to become Thomson-East Coast Line. Thomson Line is supposed to start from Prince Edward Road and end at Woodlands North. They can also change the Thomson Line to Dhoby Ghaut - Woodlands North via Promenade - Nicoll Highway - Lavender - Bendemeer - Boon Keng - Balestier - Whampoa - Zhongshan - Caldecott (and subsequently onwards) and Circle Line Esplanade to be at the Nicoll Highway portion. 2. Seletar Line is ruled out because it now has to go through Marina East. It then planned to take the section from Whampoa via Balestier, Boon Keng, Bendemeer, Kallang, Stadium, Mountbatten, Kampong Arang, Katong Park, Marina East, Marina South Promenade and all the way to Pulau Brani and Sentosa. The government wants to save money instead of incurring unnecessary money. So: DTL is merged form of BTL, CCL (DTE) and Eastern Region Line (ERL) - northern part. With that, the Downtown Line was straightened instead of curving which might be difficult to do as it will be like Bowdoin in Boston. TEL is merged form of TSL, Inner Circle Line, part of Seletar Line (from Orchard all the way to Gardens by the Bay), and the remaining part of ERL. JRL is merged form of HLL, Jurong Region Tram/LRT and guided monorail. CRL is merged form of Tampines Line, Crossrail West, old EWL West Extension and North Coast Line SLL is merged form of Seletar Line and parts of North Coast Line. HPL is merged form of the remaining Holland Line, several LRT lines and connecting the old Thomson Line.

Yes, an old schematic of the station called it the "Arts Centre Line"
@TimothyMokCJ
@TimothyMokCJ 7 ай бұрын
@@xxTrainxx-xs8zn It is in different lines, different era. It was actually Thomson Line or the Circle Line Stage 6 which can be connected at Nicoll Highway (Woodlands North-Dhoby Ghaut for the TSL). Stage 6 is considered Arts Centre Line for that matter. These lines were distanced away after Nicoll Highway collapse - Thomson Line was merged with Eastern Region Line and Seletar Line to form Thomson-East Coast Line. Now the only aim is the Holland-Paya Lebar Line. Can't imagine if it is planned before Nicoll Highway collapse, the fare will be $1.50 for adults and $0.75 for students ($1.00 for senior citizens) at the minimum.

As a result the original opening of Circle Line to be completed, was delayed 5 years from 2005 to 2010 due to the 2004 Nicoll Highway collapse.

There were plans to make Rochor Stn an interchange station for DTL passengers coming from the west and east. However, LTA claims it would be a sharp turn and Jalan Besar Stn was born... So that is something I still cannot understand, where an interchange would be so beneficial.
@amplifiedpoop

apparently the route for the north south corridor (basically a fully underground expressway) ran directly above rochor station, and they thought that it was more important than making rochor an interchange with itself

Thank you for enlightening us with the title of the book! My initial source for this was from Wikipedia which cited some ISBN number as a source. I finally managed to look up that book and it indeed stated that NCH was intended to be the terminus for the Bukit Timah Line!

I bet there's lot of internal papers in the cabinets of the government... too bad those are likely classified under OSA, not like we have a FOIA request email for those documents.
@engardepostsg
@engardepostsg 8 ай бұрын
Well, from the digging we've done with the numerous conflicting info/maps/schematics from different sources, and the countless possibilities of how the stations could have connected, it seems less like they had secret concrete plans under OSA, but more like they weren't sure of what they were doing; like they laid down all the stations they wanted first, then think of how they want to connect them together, so that early 2000s period was probably just as confusing to us as it was to the planners at LTA/URA at the time. That's unless one day someone can prove otherwise...

@@engardepostsg I have a few decades old friends who were working on the DTL project since 2000s, lots of interesting stories were shared. All I can tell you is they actually do have planning since the start, but lots of things caused plans to change, that was why you see conflicting schematics and info from different sources. Most of these information are bounded by OSA btw, nobody is willing to share even if anonymity is guaranteed unless they already plan on leaving Singapore permanently(hence why some of it got leaked online)

@@nicrome True, and even though there may have been actual plans from the start but were changed as pointed out by @Aetolus, it seems that the early 2000s was a messy time in general for the planners at LTA/URA regardless. But as far as this series is concerned, we are more interested in how these altered plans have resulted in strange oddities than we can still see today, so hopefully this video can at least give some answers from whatever public information is available.
