Good summary! Eventhough I don’t particularly enjoy Irategamers videos (I find the whole shtick extremely played out), I respect him for being a fighter. He seems to have a fairly good work-ethic as well, writing both books, keeping multiple channels alive, doing ghosthunts/lectures and more… this is impressive considering he seems to be mostly a one-man-band. AVGNs output for example is very slow nowadays and he has a whole team behind him.

There's a simple reason why Chris Bores didn't directly address the AVGN controversy earlier in his career: The internet was a much more unforgiving environment at the time. After all, this was also the same era where admitting to enjoying all six Star Wars movies was considered the worst thing anyone could ever say. That’s how insane the internet was back then. Copying someone else's content was often viewed as a serious offense, even more so than actual crimes. Even if Chris Bores had addressed the situation, he likely would have continued to be a target of hatred, with people reacting by saying that admitting it wouldn’t improve the situation or make the criticism go away. The reason Chris chose to respond years later was that the internet had become more forgiving and understanding. During that period, concerns over content theft diminished in comparison to other issues, especially with the growing number of KZbinrs who had been exposed as real-life criminals who committed actual crimes, which made Chris look like a saint by comparison, especially since, and speaking from personal interactions, he's actually a very nice guy and surprisingly down to earth given that he used to be THE number one target on KZbin. Additionally, Chris received more re-evaluation thanks to several people who had previously criticized or even antagonized him coming to forgive, accept, or befriend him. This is especially notable with Mike Matei, who was the second most vocal critic of Chris, outside of Batdan. Mike eventually got along with Chris, whereas Batdan continued to hate on him, even after Chris and James Rolfe collaborated, going so far as to antagonize James. That behavior is just pathetic. Overall, this is why Chris Bores didn't directly address the controversy right away: Doing so likely wouldn’t have diminished the hatred he received, at best only slightly. The hate wagon would have continued regardless. However, over time, Chris has found a way to positively engage with his audience and move forward, demonstrating that, against all odds, it is indeed possible for someone to achieve growth and redemption.

I got a blast of nostalgia watching this video. The Irate Gamer was my first exposure to the angry reviewer genre, retro gaming, and gaming history on KZbin. I wasn't aware of the AVGN or any allegations of plagiarism or poor reporting thrown at Chris. I just enjoyed the videos as a 9-10 year old kid. I watched pretty much everything Chris would put out at the time, even the old ghost hunting stuff. His initial coverage of the first Skylanders game is one of the factors convinced me to buy the game and become a big fan of the franchise. It was around 2012 that I became aware of AVGN and jumped onto the "Irate Gamer sucks" ship. For some time I would watch DJ Cuell's and DLAbaoaqu's videos commentating on old IG videos. After that I just left the Irate Gamer behind, became a teenager, and moved onto newer, better gaming channels on KZbin. Years later, I would be made aware of the Puppet Steve stuff through one of Guru Larry's videos. It was surreal to not only see Chris still uploading videos, but to know it was easily the most successful thing he had ever done up until that point. He was still doing the Skylanders stuff too! Beyond that, I let Irate Gamer stay in my past. I'm glad him and James were able to bury the hatchet and work together. I might just go back to watch the old Irate Gamer videos for the hell of it thanks to your video. I know you said the recent ghost hunting stuff wouldn't be mentioned, but I wish you covered his involvement with Nick Rekeita, Ethan Ralph, and the Sonichu Medallion curse. It was easily one of the most hilarious things I've seen from him. I hope Chris continues to have success online, even with the ghost hunting stuff.

Weirdly enough I kinda have gone through 3 phases of "opinions" on the Irate Gamer myself. When I first found him as a kid, I thought he was hilarious and could rival AVGN (helped too that I didn't really understand what plagiarism was as a 9/10 year old and thus didn't understand why people hated him for that). Then in my teenage years and especially as I went into my AVGN fanboy phase, I really started hating Chris, especially after learning about some of the "awful" things he had supposedly done. Now as a 24-year-old, I kinda am just like "whatever" on the guy. I don't think he's notably good, but he certainly is far from the worst content creator and person on the internet for sure. Truth be told I really don't think he deserved much of the hate he got. In a lot of ways I think Chris kinda just had bad luck on his side, what with his sudden rise to fame back in the day when such a meteoric rise was rarely seen on KZbin (or the internet in general for that matter) and the fact that he also happened to be an angry reviewer during a time when pretty much everyone who reviewed games in that fashioned was getting knocked for being an "AVGN ripoff" and when James was at the peak of his success. Funny enough, in some ways, with James's recent scandals and controversies and the fact that it's been revealed that a lot of his own recent work has been plagiarized, you could almost argue Chris has gotten the last laugh in the end and that the tables have been turned for him. Regardless I do wish him well, and I am glad that the two of them have, if nothing else, at least resolved their "bad blood" so to speak.

Regarding SNES vs Genesis, you could technically argue that the Genesis came out in the US to compete with the SNES. While it came out first, it was marketed in a way to beat the SNES which was out in Japan already and the marketing team knew what they had. Retro actively speaking I do believe a lot of things Chris did. He may subconciously copied the AVGN and watching his videos just to 'know' what he shouldn't copy is not gonna help. Him stopping to watch him to get fresh ideas are the way to go. The thing I appreciate about the Irate Gamer are that he was so bad that it is good and I honestly like his content more than modern AVGN to the point I stopped watching AVGN before the movie came out. Also the Irate Gamer parodies that came out where gold (minus the one from Lowcow Linkara who is what people believe Irate Gamer is acting like. I would like to watch a Linkara Parody of Irate Gamer). Also a channel I like to watch and I am subbed to JustSomeRandomClips has some hilarious clips about all the 'angry reviewers'. It started as a nitpick of Irate Gamer but over time, like how we started to look more critically instead of jumping the bandwagon, he also went over other angry reviewers including AVGN and Nostalgia Critic. I think they are hilarious. Besides, who can forget No Date Gamer who sadly removed his channel, but his videos are still around I think. The most recent videos I liked from Chris were the Jurassic Park videos where AVGN appeared randomly. Otherwise, I moved away from his channel.
