The Computer Programme was a TV series, produced by Paul Kriwaczek, originally broadcast by the BBC (on BBC2) in 1982. The idea behind the series was to introduce people to computers and show them what they were capable of. The BBC wanted to use their own computer, so the BBC Micro was developed as part of the BBC Computer Literacy Project, and was featured in this series. The series was successful enough for two series to follow it, namely Making the Most of the Micro in 1983 and Micro Live from 1984 until 1987.
The two studio presenters were Ian McNaught-Davis (known as 'Mac') and Chris Serle, the former showing the latter some of the rudimentary basics of computer operation and BASIC programming. The 'on location' reporter was Gill Nevill.
Each programme would normally start with either Serle or McNaught-Davis introducing a real life situation where computers are being (or could be) applied - examples included the office, a car factory and the British Library. This would form the theme which would underpin the demonstrations shown on the programme.

19:10 It's really affirming to hear someone's definition of work match my own. Genuinely really glad, I finally feel a weight being lifted and a sense of solidarity with others constantly berated for laziness and entitlement.

Oh wow, that paper based banking transfer system! I had no idea that was how it all used to function - mad. Lovely to see such optimism for computers and what they could free us to do. Even Rex is bullish about it! 😅

In 35 years, money transfers in the UK have gone from taking 3 days, to near instantaneous (the banks say max 2 hours).

Even cheques (on the rare occasion they are used) can often be paid in by scanning via a mobile app, and funds are available by the end of the next day (and I reckon some of that is redundant).

Aaaahhh, so much *THIS*! There's so much nonsense about "jobs" now (if not elsewhen as well) so it's lovely to hear from people more interested in worthy sapient endeavours than in putting people to work on something, no matter what, as long as every 'individual' is serving, is working 'a job.' Lecht here even presents the wonderful idea that work isn't the only worthwhile tasking of a person! Sadly, I don't see these ideas (or ideals?) often. People pretend to care about creativity and the like but really expect everyone to live as servile livestock, just another machine doing a job or a tool used for another's purposes. Only in "free time," time not claimed by someone who controls more money, are we allowed to ever think or exist as sapients.
