Both popular films at the time and were released while Arnie was on the rise! Today we will look at both films and their NEW 4K blu rays released in this Beautiful Arrow Video Package called the Conan Chronicles!

Like the review bro, but how can you not mention the amazing score by Basil Poledouris, such a big part of Conan the Barbarian and one the greatest scores put on film imo. 👍💯

It was truly just a video timing thing. I thought the score for both films were great for their films. Which means I liked the original one much more then the second which matches that films silly tone but I just don’t dig the film that much. I also loved the score but unfortunately if some stuff does get cut for the youtube Algorithm. I try and do deep dives into movies which a show on the channel where we break down films for about an hour and hopefully Conan The Barbarian should end up on there. I also wanted to talk about the religious allegory of the films as well but didn’t want to ramble on lol. But I absolutely agree it should have probably been brought up.

Basil’s pounding score was the perfect Conan theme, each musical note a visualization of fire, steel and Conan’s muscular form! His symphony for the orgy scene in Thulsa Doom’s lair also perfectly matched the atmosphere😎

@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia I know Dino DeLarentis spared no expense for this production but I can’t fathom how everything went down several notches on the 2nd film, including being a PG movie! It’s a Conan movie for Pete sake, so trying to make it more family friendly kinda defeats the purpose!

Tbh, I’d be more wowed by this release if I love Destroyer as much as Barbarian. Conan to me is more iconic than Terminator because he was born for the role, as Christopher Reeves was for Superman! Even when I read Robert E Howard’s Conan books I instinctively visualize Arnie, and it’s a pity that it could’ve been another continuing franchise for him spanning to King Conan, which they had originally intended.

You’re absolutely right! Arnold was born to play Conan. From what I heard they wanted to make this franchise they even set it up but I can’t recall what happened that made them stop. They were both successful. It feels like one of those timing things where they just couldn’t get everyone back and the timing just passed.

Commando writer Steven De Souza said Arnie was glad to play a normal guy in Commando instead of “a caveman walking around in a loincloth or a robot”, which implies his eagerness to escape being pigeonholed to roles like Conan and Terminator😆

I have the Blu Ray version set of The Conan Chronicles coming in from Amazon tomorrow. So looking forward to this coming in and I'm glad Arrow also put out Blu Ray versions of these releases alongside the 4k versions. I only have these on VHS from when I taped them on T.V as a kid. I saw Conan The Destroyer in the theater with my dad as a little kid(I was 4) so the second film holds a little something special for me even though I acknowledge Conan The Barbarian is a better film. I saw Conan The Barbarian a few years later when I was 9 or 10 on T.V. I know many are getting the individual releases for each film because they want the box art with the film's posters as you point out. But IMO The Conan Chronicles set is the better buy if want want both films. You're not losing anything from what I see. You get all the postcards and posters and the book combines all the essays from the individual books with the separate releases. Plus you still get the poster art in the cases. One of the nice things on the blu Ray releases vs the 4K releases, and it's a small thing., you can see the reversible art with the Blu Ray cases. The Blu Ray cases are clear from the look of the promotional art, so you can see thru them (like how Blu Ray cases are usually see thru even with the normal blue cases since they aren't solid color).The 4K cases are the solid black which doesn't work great with reversible art.

That’s why the reversible art was just a solid shot of Arnold. I didn’t even consider the clear cases. That’s one thing we lost with 4K. I wish they would make them like a smoky gray so we can take advantage of that. I totally get having a connection to the destroyer when you said it with your dad. Which is awesome by the way. I definitely think the bluntest will be a big jump from your recorded off TV VHS but it can’t replace the Nostalgia of that VHS.

​@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia I still have all my VHS boxed away even the ones taped off T.V.. Some of the real old ones hold lots of memories. For example, I still have my VHS of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial from when it came out on home video back in 1988.I was 8 years old. That was a big deal back then because the film came out in 1982.Six years was a long wait by the late 80's for a home video release of a film.And was one of the very rare priced for sale releases on release date. Back then video tapes of films were initially priced for rental and were near a $100 to buy a VHS copy for the first 8 months to a year of a films home release. E.T. and then a year later with Batman 89 and The Last Crusade, you were getting a few price for sale at release.. E.T also had a very rare green and black VHS cassette which is the only time I've ever seen a tape look like that. Agree about the 4K cases .They should of gone with a clear case design instead of a solid colored case. A smoky grey is a good idea. The 4K cases make reversible art. pointless unless you do what Scream Factory (and I think Kino does too. I only have one Kino title and it''s a Blu Ray released in 2020) with the 4K's that get reversible art. Where you can use the slipcover with the one art and use the reversible art for the case.have

Growing up my parents were divorced and my mom was the film fan so we had a VHS collection and we actually had that black and Green ET. I grew up in the 90s so VHS was reasonably priced when I started buying them loll. But when I was doing research for Batman 89 I was reading about the prices of VHS tapes in the 80s and that is crazy that they used to cost that much especially for the time. New Technology I guess. N64 games were crazy priced when they first came out. Some got close to $80. Kino sometimes does the reversible art but like Scream factory it seems to be random. Scream factory I get but Kinos 4K releases are all in the same packaging and disk design so it’s strange that they all either would or wouldn’t have a reversible sleeve.

@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia I was 11 and I wanted Back To The Future Part III on VHS when it came out. It was $89.99 for the VHS. since it was priced for rental. I already knew months before that it would be priced like that. I didn't care. I wanted it. My parents said, save up yourself and you can get it.I spent all summer saving up. When i did, my father wanted to take the money I saved up to buy the tape and put it in the bank. My mom stopped him and pointed out that it sends the wrong message to basically lie. That i spent all that time to save up to buy this and then to turn around and take the money and stick in the bank. It would teach me not to keep my word on things. So she let me get it. I pre-ordered it at Erol's video. We weren't members with blockbuster yet(that happened a year later). I did have one problem though. I didn't know about plus tax. lol So I was like two dollars and change short. My dad who actually didn't want me to waste that amount on money on this is the one who gave me the $2 and change since it was their fault for not telling me about tax and it was such a small amount I was short. Looking back, it is crazy how much most new VHS releases were in the 80's and early 90's.I spend way less on a Blu Ray and 4K (with Blu Ray disks of course) release today then it would cost to buy a new VHS release in the 80's. Even a boutique collectors type release like The Conan Chronicles , whether the 4K version or Blu Ray version , is way cheaper then most VHS releases back then. And something like this, you are getting two films, much higher picture and sound quality ,Collector's packaging and swag. Just a completely .different release model back then with physical media.

I watched the 130 minute cut but I did run all 3 to make sure they work. There really isn’t a difference between the international cut and the Extended cut. The more gore the better loll

I believe the director stated James Earl Jones wig was done that way to represent a lost race where he is one of the last. A brown skinned man with blue eyes and straight black hair. I thought that was a cool idea.

Conan the Barbarian is one of my all-time favorite films! Saw it in the theatre as a kid and it blew me away! Conan the Destroyer is much lighter in tone, but fun. Got my Conan Chronicles set in a couple days ago and I'm very happy. Arrow did a great job.

They really nailed this release. One of my favorites from them. Conan The Barbarian is a great film. I’ve actually been thinking about it a lot since I rewatched it. Maybe I was too hard on The Destroyer but it just didn’t feel like it was in the same ballpark as the original but it’s still Arnold and i’ll pretty much watch him do anything lol.

Ha! Yeah, Destroyer is one of those where you just have to let it be and have fun. Definitely a much different film than Barbarian. I would've loved to have seen John Milius and Ron Cobb (production designer) do a proper sequel.@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia

I completely forgot to bring that extra up and when I was rewatching the movie you can completely see that. A boy who watched his father get murdered, leaves then comes back as an adult to get revenge on the man who did it. I can totally see that and there is even some sorcerer stuff in The Northman.
