In isiZulu lobola is normally 11 cows, but the 11th cow will be paid if the girl is still a virgin, and that 11th cow is paid specifically to the mother of the bride for raising a well kept, maintained and behaved daughter.

It is not about how you feel it is about fulfilling cultural requirements. It is not about buying a person or enriching anybody. Also all that family contact helps to stregnthen family bonds as this is a merging of 2 families not just 2 people

For us esiXhoseni deciding how many cows is a family matter not a custom. Some one as well off as Khaya Ngqula will not lobola the same as a security guard. He paid millions cause he is well off. And yes an educated virgin well mannered girl from a highly educated family will not be the same as from a financially struggling family even if she is also well mannered and a virgin unless she is also educated. EDUCATION USUALLY SETS THE STANDARD VERY HIGH since there are n't many virgins out there.

Parents always encourage their children to behave very well but they don't tell you it's so your lobola can be expensive coz no parent discusses lobola with their child. The concept of lobola is more about bringing families together and the groom's family appreciating the bride's family.
@shaunsebata47982 жыл бұрын
In Sotho culture it is not as expensive. The amount that will be needed for the bride's family to throw the celebrations will play a huge role in the amount that will be needed. But as far as I know around R30 000 is an expected range for a normal family. And it is never referred to as "buying". A family is only allowed to use that word when they want to make enemies and break their son's heart.

I don't like how this South African chick is explaining things. It's not 'how much the daughter costs'!🙄 The parents are not selling the daughter and amaLobolo have less to do with the bride and groom and more to do with joining both families. Mibi I advise you do more research and not only take this chick's word for it because she's not educating you fully - she's leaving gaps and is explaining in an unflattering way. Annoying really.

If you married by civil law without Lobola and things don't go well in your marriage or life , you will be mocked and blamed. It's not worth it. Just pay lobola

Never.your marriage is legal in court and not the concern of the parents greed as marriage is what you make it with or without their blessings.so go get married to your beloved and be happy without your parents and family breathing down your neck for greedy agendas cause you have to life your life and marriage not them with their old traditions and cursed

WOW, quite educative. While I don't want to demean the lobola concept, 10 cows minimum is quite pricey and something to think over. I imagine that a man who suffers very much to pay a high lobola for a wife will be more inclined to being hard on the woman, than if he married her within modest and convenient means.
@winniemlondo65322 жыл бұрын

@@Mibiafolabi Surname/lastname is passed down from the father side. CLAN NAME is commemorative in nature, with names being shared among a group of people ( Unlike surnames, they may not be related by blood). They will have names and cultural things like language shared among themselves. Its more of a culture identification. For example, I have a surname, but as a Mosotho I also have a clan name which is MOSIA, and we belong to the Cat clan. During praise ceremonies you will mention several times my association with cats. Some people are: Bataung- Lions Batloung - Elephants Bakwena - Crocodiles Is possible that many many many years ago people were living in groups and something will happen with one particular animal and then after that they identified themselves with it. (This is just my hypothesis , I am not a historian I am just guessing)
