I'm really like that you are standing up for the true investigation. If I remember correctly the photos of Janet levitating off of her bed, her legs are underneath her and it looks she is jumping. Not to mention the photos where taken with a motion sensor camera. The other things are harder to explain like Janet losing weight at an amazingly fast speed (but not enough to levitate), or the fact when they talked to the son of the alleged Poltergeist he said his father had died in exactly the same way the alleged poltergeist said he did.

The thing I found most objectionable about this film was the insertion of the Warrens into this case as they played, at best, a peripheral role. The majority of the investigation was conducted by the late Guy Lyon Playfair and Maurice Grosse who found that while there was quite a lot of fraudulent behaviour there was some things that were genuinely not easily explained. As per usual the Skeptic community, usually headed by proffessional magicians, claimed that the evidence could have been recreated by themselves and no doubt they are right, but the difference between a very experienced stage magician and a young teenage girl would be very noticeable.

About the whole "Ouija board contacts your subconscious," thing, Brain Games did an interesting experiment on a Ouija board, saying that the reason why you move the planchette without your own accord is due to an affect in the brain, comparing it to something that I can't remember. I mean the upside down cross is actually used by satanists, so even tho it wasn’t born as a satanic symbol, we can’t ignore that it does have a double meaning now
@ThatRandomEncounterGuy4 жыл бұрын
Sara Ds the *actual* Satanic Cross (used by the Satanic Church and even used in the Satanic Bible) does have some similar properties to the inverted cross, but it’s actually repurposing the alchemical symbol for Sulphur. The inverted cross thing is still wrong but it’s a lot more natural than an upright cross turning itself into the Satanic cross like a fucking Decepticon.
@SinStar874 жыл бұрын
@@ThatRandomEncounterGuy it's like arguing the swastika is just a hindu icon, totally nothing to do with some 20th german group. or the confederate battle flag is totally a cultural symbol, nothing to do with slavery, nope nothing. Moreover, it's very questionable that peter's executioners would indulge his religious wishes and increase their workload by crucifying him upside down so the peter's cross itself is also likely a made up adaption.
@Theokal34 жыл бұрын
@@SinStar87 I don't really see how the historical accuracy is relevant to the argument; factually, the upside down cross is still used by the Catholic Church nowadays to represent the Pope, unlike the Confederate Battle Flag and the Swastika where the new meaning has kinda outweighted the original. Unless you want to argue the Catholic Church secretly is a satanist cult (which for all their flaws I think is pushing it a bit). Also, is the upside down cross actually used by Satanism? Only place I ever remember seeing it used as a symbol of the devil is in fiction. I don't know of any satanist group who use it. And if it's a pure fictional thing, then... yeah, I think comparing it to symbols like the Swastica being actually used by bad groups in real life is a bit silly.
@SinStar874 жыл бұрын
@@Theokal3 yes it's been adopted by satanist due to it's representation in fiction as a symbol of satan. It's no different from the Nazi Swastika supplanting the Indian origin. Just to add to what the daecon said, St Peter didn't believe that he was worthy enough to die in the same way as Christ, which is why his cross was turned upside down. It is in fact a symbol of humbleness as well as devotion to Jesus: the OPPOSITE of how it's usually depicted in media.

Sometimes I feel like I must be completely insane because James Wan's movies bore the shit out of me. Every time he gets some creepy atmosphere going, his lack of restraint ruins the pay off. Even then, a lot of the build-ups feel very full of themselves, thinking that they earn the jumpscare. By the way, jumpscares are the payoffs for *all tension building scenes in his films*. I cannot think of one example where that is not the case, and it's just so lazy and frustrating, all it does is abruptly end the scene and prevent it from getting under your skin. I stand by that the original Saw was a solid and tense mystery film. It was unique, minimalist and full of heart. Every thing James has done since feels like a bunch of bullshit. Insidious Chapter 2 is my favorite post-Saw film from him simply because it was unique. Ghost stories don't normally fuck about with time manipulation, or have such tight continuity. Insidious 2 made the first movie a little more interesting for me. Insidious Chapter 1 and The Conjuring Series are so uninspired. They're the most by-the-books ghost movies imaginable. I simply don't understand what chord they strike with people. The staircase scene from Annabelle genuinely scared more than anything in any other James Wan movie. And Annabelle is a shitty James Wan spinoff.

I find is interesting that although I've seen the movie at least twice, watched this review multiple times and various similar reviews/discussions from other channels in addition to having a pretty good working knowledge of the Endfield haunting the movie is based around, I still dont really understand the intricacies of the plot, it seems to have so much going on and so many ghost/demons and I've no clear idea as to the relevance of most of them. With the exception of "Bill Willkins" the supposed spirit haunting the Endfield house, everything else just feels tacked on and convoluted. It really doesn't need the addition of the bloody nun, a vague recreation of Amityville and the f@#king ludicrous crooked man. I could include the Warrens in that list as yet another complicating factor!
@deusdeaconReviews5 жыл бұрын
The nun exist purely because of the franchise, for spin-offs and sequels its literally that cynical, and the crooked man exist because they're incapable of making a decent horror story without a big oogidy boogidy monster to chase people.

That’s the rather common theme with these type of movies especially when coming from a country like America(who gives tax breaks to con artists like a certain Aussie creationist), the whole upside down cross is the end result of not doing any real research, making the rational skeptics unrealistically douchey, and of course make the Warrens and others of their ilk the good guys, then I remember it’s the same country that 18% think the sun revolves around the earth and 45% believe in other supernatural creatures including ones from other countries be it the leprechaun from Ireland to the Yurei of Japan that somehow made it to America(because everybody knows America is the only supernatural hotspot right?).

Fucking hell, the first "insidious" movie launched an entire fucking universe. I just heard the other day that "The Crooked Man" is getting his own spin off movie either later this year or in 2019. When and if that movie gets made it will be the 3rd different franchise that insidious launched. (Technically it will be a spin off of The Conjuring, but the Conjuring is a spin off of Insidious so it counts as an insidious movie in my book). "Insidious: The Last Key" just hit theaters a few weeks ago, so that makes 4 insidious movies, then there were 2 "Conjuring" movies which launched the "Annabelle" and "Annabelle Creation" movies, and then there is "The Crooked Man ." That is pretty fucking crazy when you think about it. I can't remember a horror franchise that not only had multiple sequels as well as 2 separate franchises, both of which have a sequel. James Wan is making a fucking killing because they are all successful franchises. Insidious just opened a flood gate when it first came out. The best part for the producers and executives is that they can just keep taking elements of characters from each new film and then launch a franchise, then they can make spin offs of they spin offs, then make multiple sequels for each spin off, and just keep going on and on and on, like some never ending loop of spin off, sequel, spin off, sequel, spin off, see for as long as they want and for any character or any sub plot from the spin offs source film.

Here's a synopsis of the upcoming Conjuring 3: *Ed and Lorraine Warren head to London in the 1980's to investigate a man named Bill Ramsey who is presumably being possessed and haunted by a demon of a werewolf* The demon of a werewolf. The demon...of a werewolf! Have they lost their fucking minds? Producer: "What? You want us to make yet another movie about demons? No, that's old hat. How about this? You have a guy who is possessed and haunted by a demon. But not just any old run-of-the-mill demon. This demon resides within a werewolf! The script practically writes itself. Part four could be about the demon of a vampire, five the demon of a mummy, then a spin-off of all three, before finally having all three in the same movie! Wait, we''ll throw Annabelle, the nun, and The Crooked Man in there, too Eat your fucking hearts out, Universal! We're about to create a shared monster universe that is going to put Marvel to shame."

the film is still actually based on one of the real case/books of the warrens did where a guy "claimed" to be possessed and a werewolf, fortunately for me its the most laughably stupid and ridiculous ones they ever wrote about, and no one has tried to debunk and counter there claims in the book, because it debunks itself.

Stuff like the "my house" and painting bit are annoyingly prevalent in what people call "horror" these days, when I wouldn't count those types of films as horror at all, as the use of that jump scare almost always seem to be to make the audience laugh at the good old scare they got. It's like how at the end of a film they'll do a "boo" moment, and the audience all laugh along at the last jump scare and go out of the film feeling happy and cheerful. So ye clearly these films never intended to be scary, as they take every opportunity they can to dispel any air of tension or fear.

@deusdeaconReviews4 жыл бұрын

Personally I thought that this movie is very good if you ignore the historical facts but that just my opinion

That's always his problem, most of his arguments against film is how well they represent reality..
@machinamedia17975 жыл бұрын
well there's historical fiction and there's making shit up to make things more interesting, this movie being the latter.
@sarads78774 жыл бұрын
Machina Media I mean i don’t understand why something needs to be historical fiction. Like they are making a movie, not a documentary, if they wanna add some twists to the original story, i don’t see the problem.

@@sarads7877I think it seems to stem from a disdain for the real Warrens. Can’t even disagree myself, it sort of hovers over all the fiction when I know now how much I don’t like the real Warrens.

If the Amityvile house is haunted, then my sisters old house should have a dead guy constantly slitting his wrists in the bathroom. True story. The guy that originally built the house my sister bought killed himself in it. Plus my last house had a fuck ton of crucifixes and an old couple died in it.

Do you plan on reviewing Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil?

Florence Lupin I thought that film would be a comedy based on the beginning of the trailer, probably would have been better as one.
@troin39257 жыл бұрын
Florence Lupin I've heard people say good things about Origin of Evil, saying it's better than the first one. It's even directed by Mike Flannigan, who directed Oculus.
@florencelupin98857 жыл бұрын
+Troin I actually saw Origin of Evil around the time it came out, same with Oculus. Needless to say, Oculus was the "first" R-rated movie I've seen in theaters, and I wasn't at all disappointed. In fact, it's still one of my favorite horror movies as of now. I also saw Hush and thought that was just as good. And when I heard this was coming in theaters, I did actually have some skepticisms because of how the trailers were edited, so I went in with very low expectations, as I always do with any movie. And I actually thought it wasn't half bad. All in all, I freaking love Mike Flannigan now and I hope that his adaptation of Gerald's Game is gonna be good, since it's also gonna come out on Netflix and all. I wanted to read the book, but I lost it in high school lol, so, instead, I'll prepare by listening to an audiobook. Really excited to see what's next from him.

So here's the thing I have to say the reason I like this film is simply because I enjoy it for being a supernatural paranormal film regardless of whether or not the events are accurate to the real case or not. I mean the crooked man character alone is a good example of that. Is that a good reason to enjoy a movie like this
@anthonysandoval5512 Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry I know this is something that's personal to you but I don't think this film is as bad as you say it is. This is also just my opinion and please understand I'm not saying this just to piss you off. I'm sure you take this very seriously and I admire you for sticking up for the original case. I'm just saying I enjoyed this movie as a fun scary movie.

I would say you cant say "this is just my opinion" while also claiming that my opinion is wrong and saying its not a bad film, either opinions matter or they dont here, you can like this film all you want it really doesnt matter to me, im not here to change minds im here to explain why i believe this film (and all the conjuring films) makes heroes out of actual evil disgusting charlatans.

@@deusdeaconReviews Honestly I don't know what to say anymore. I just keep saying the wrong thing which gives you the wrong idea. I would like to apologize and say if you hate this movie that's fine and you definitely give a good reason for it. I'm just grateful movies like this exist where I can actually be scared unlike the other stupid horror shit we get today like the bye bye man and the slender man movie.
