Castellers is an ancient tradition in Catalonia that consists in building human castles. This one is from "Castellers de Vilafranca" and is currently the largest one ever made, with a height of ten people! (Notice the ones at top are children). No ropes, no helmets, no nothing, just the traditional suit and guts! Some think it's scary freakish to do this just for fun, but the truth is in more than a century doing this things only a few had severe injuries.
I added a music song to the clip called Polaris by Bostic.

I was this latest sunday (August 31st) in San Felix. It was my first time looking human castles in person...It was amazing. REally amazing. Technique, effort and tradition count a lot. The environment that builds around is impressive. I enjoyed as never did before...got very emotional as well seing how the castle was being constructed till it was fully done, moment at which the square became crazy! clapping and yelling! It is not as dangerous as it might seem. Most sports are far more dangerous

I was never forced to go to Castles, quite the contrary, my mum did not want me to go, but because I love it so much she finally agreed to support me. In my research I found out that children who participate in Castells are normally more secure and responsible than kids who don't. think before you speak!!

congratz to the castellers de vilafranca! am looking forward to being there to see this pure awesomeness live! every year, dozens of people die in the alps _HIKING_ (not climbing) lots of people die in avalanches skiing and HUNDREDS die in car accidents on our streets in TINY switzerland with just 7mio inhabitants. 15'000 castells are built _every_ year and yet in over 300 years severe injuries have proven extremely rare. it's more likely that those who criticize it are simply jealous of their ppl not having any cool traditions. castells are NOT a dangerous sport/tradition. i hope this tradition will live for as long as mankind lives.

Children are often willing to take part in Castells, because it's an old and very beautiful tradition. Noone is forcing them to be there.

Although the castle fell, the kid (anxaneta) managed to get to the top, so it's considered half a victory. Since it was the first time this kind of castle was completely built, it's a unique and worth of celebration moment.

@prettypollution it's not all about taxes, it is also about culture, language, and self-determination. Most of catalan people does not feel identified with "hispanity" and this is the main reason why we want to be an independent country.

I have been a Castellera since I was 5 and I have only had to go to hospital because of Castles twice and left on the same day. I have researched a lot about Castles and found out that it is one of the less risky sports that exist. Playing in the playground is more dangerous. Only 3 children have died practicing castles and 1 adult (unfortunatly not long ago) in 300 years.

Although there is always some risk, there have been only a few serious injured people over the years. The fall in this video (falling like a "block") its quite safe. BTW, after an accident some years ago children now always wear a helmet. Typical injuries building "castells" aren't worse than those you can suffer from playing any team sport.

The sad truth is that in fact there HAD been even a deadly accident during the last year, a young kid died...she would have survived with a helmet on.

The "anxaneta" (the last child to go up) wears a helmet. Besides, the public that watch, acts as a cushion for the tower. As much people the best must envolve the whole tower for in case the tower falls. Check te video again and you'll see everybody is attached to it. The castellers (people of the tower) learn and practice how to fall and not to hurt.

I agree with u:Spain is a nation, but Catalonia and the Basque country are also 2 different nations. Saying that "every spanish province insists on regional nationalism" isn't true. Most of the spanish regions consider themselves spanish and don't want to be anything else. They share the same traditions, history, and language. But it's different with other 3 regions(Galiza,Basque Country and Catalonia)wich have nothing in common with the spanish. Is like saying that Irish people are English.

hi ha més perill comprant una moto al nen que que faci castells. Aquesta és una tradició molt maca i, a part d'algun cas aïllat, poques vegades es fan mal les criatures. Per ells és una experiència molt gratificant i saludable.

My point is that no father (or mother) has the right to expose their children to a dangerous situation like this just for fun or "tradition". I've seen many "castells" and most of the kids (7 or 8 yo) have the fear reflected on their faces before they go up. It has nothing to do with a boring or funny world. It has to do with defending those that can't defend by themselves

Saying "excentric" I mean things/ideas like Gaudi, Dali, Miro, Picasso (partially!), etc. "Tomatina" and "Fallas" (valencian-catalan!) count as well. Of course, I see it with the western eyes - otherwise it is, probably, the Japanese or Chinese. Anyway, thanks!

Most people in Catalonia don't feel spanish, especially those who do the human towers, and they hate slaughtering bulls for 2 important reasons:is not a catalan tradition, but a spanish one, imposed during the Franco period, and second one: is a cruelty . So,I can understand if you do not like human towers but trying to compare it with the cruel spanish traditions is going to far. And we,catalan people, are trying to become a free country like EVERY OTHER COUNTRY IN EUROPE,just for you to know.

Visca el folklore català, que és el més maco del món! Per cert, ara tots els nens porten casc nowadays all children wear helmet and hardly ever they suffer any pain.

I disagree in total with your note. A castell is a human tower traditionally built during festivals in many places in Catalonia, Spain. There is 1 castell fallen over 1000's built. and no one dies NEVER. Parents have to sign an official document as their children can participate in these cultural groups. You don't mess up with my country tradition and I won't mess up on yours.
