Human-made contaminants have long-lasting impacts even on the health of our unborn grandchildren. We can no longer afford “the solution to pollution is dilution” paradigm. We need to create a culture of long-term thinking, environmental justice, and common sense solutions.
Tracie Baker is faculty at Wayne State University and has earned degrees in marine biology, veterinary medicine, and environmental toxicology. Her lab focuses on multidisciplinary, translational research that bridges human, animal, and environmental health. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

So many of my friends and compatriots have died from stomachs cancer . I put it down to disinfectants in dish washers. As a young man on a ranch we used wood ash to wash dishes ect. I am 80 years no problem todate. X Zimbabwe

Telling everyone to replace the products in their home with organic ones is a good idea in theory, but you are forgetting one vital thing: organic versions of everything are consistently more expensive than the alternative, and most Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. This solution will only work if a) it becomes more economically viable or b) the general public has more spending money.

What an interesting topic, Ms.Baker😊 The Epagenetics is the compound/chemical that can interfere with our genes (DNA sequence), such as plastic, heavy metal, mercury, etc. When we're exposed to that chemical/compound , it can interfere our DNA sequence and make change in our body genetically. *And we'll pass that modifications of genes down to our children and surely it will affect their lives too* So yeah, she's right, it's like a boomerang for us. It's so scary to think that what we eat/consume will certainly affect our future generation too.

@@Rawmantic92 Becourse American stages require you to mention a personal anecdote to be "relatable", her research should have been sufficient. Obviously she didn't research alone but even then others could have been "more relatable" and get the stage.

@J K : It's called being illiterate. Your cure is to read and become educated. It's not all that hard, but you'll have to be willing to go past the regressive brain-washing that's been forced on you by those with tiny brains they don't bother using.

Mostly very good, but the whole 'Use products that contain things you recognise not names you cant say' is a borderline harmful thing to say. It is a point regularly used by pseudoscience homeopath/anti-vaxx/etc-types, it is not reasonable to expect the average person to be able to understand all ingredient lists. If you want that to change then we need to start at childhood education level. Fear what you dont understand is a terrrible suggestion and while i realise thats not the overall point it will be the take-away from this for many. To me that part is so problematic id prefer the video is removed, but i see much value in the rest of it, so perhaps an edit is pssible?

I think most ppl will understand what she mean,t bcz the point of this video is more profound than "we should replace the product that we dont recognize the names". She explained that there are compound/chemical which can interfere with our genes/DNA sequence, such as plastic, heavy metal, etc. And when we're being exposed to that chemical/compound , it can interfere our DNA sequence and make change in our body genetically. And we will pass that modifications of genes down to our future generation and sutely it will affect their lives too. So yeah, I think she is right it's like a boomerang for us. So, that's why she suggested that we should pay attention to what we eat/consume bcz it will affect our future generation too.
