What a beautiful house filled with treasures. Thanks for posting this.

In loving memory of all the local people who worked hard on the estate - amongst them my family.

Do people not work on the Estate any more?..I watched the sale and bought an item from here..at least it will stay in UK,Welsh Hills not so far away from where we live, guess a lot of the stuff will go overseas. Very sad for it to leave it's Native Wales.

The library was originally at Brogyntyn hall. It's such a shame that the hall is now in a state of disrepair.
@trademark51243 жыл бұрын
Brogyntyn is now half of what it originally was unfortunately. I know Francis Ormsby Gore tried hard to self it off to property developers in the early 2000s, but no one was interested. Oh well, I suppose it’s better to knock it down then for it to just sit there unwanted.

@@trademark5124 there was talk years ago about it becoming a nursing home which would have been ideal and would have created loads of jobs. On another note, the 5th baron proposed to Jacqueline Kennedy, but she turned him down because she didn't want to live in Oswestry!
@trademark51243 жыл бұрын
@@brad_8711 I wasn't aware of that! And I think Jackie turned him down for many things - not enough money for her liking, the fact that she wanted protection for her children, but it was mainly due to the fact that she wasn't in love with Lord Harlech.

I've personally known Francis, the last heir of the family and even spent an evening in this house in his and her fiancee's company. What a true eccentric Englishman.

I hate when anyone’s estate has to be sold. Surely some of the family, anyone of the family, could have kept it. There’s rarely a complete and total end of lineage.
@Oakleaf7005 жыл бұрын
The person who inherited sold off some selected things to fund the restoration of the house...The remaining family probably were able to buy things that they really wanted. I bought an item from there, so it hasn't gone far..not shipped overseas like all too many things were.

This should be preserved and opened up to the public not sold off to oligarchs.

A lot of the money the Ormsby-Gore family had in the last century came from business ventures as a pose to inheritance, this house isn't even the original family seat.

@@brad_8711 This house has supposedly been in the family for a couple of centuries - Death Duties {inheritance tax} crippled the family at one time.

It's so sad how Alice Ormsby-Gore died in poverty and in such tragic circumstances in 1995.
@trademark51244 жыл бұрын
Absolutely awful what happened to her. From what I’ve read, she was a beautiful, sensitive soul who became hooked when she was so young. Hope she’s at peace now.

Quite a few tragedies occurred in the family. A brother committed suicide in 1974 as well.

@@floydpitt7590 Yes - Julian, the eldest of the five siblings and originally the heir of the 5th Baron Harlech committed suicide in '74. Alice found his body. When the 5th Baron died in 1985, Alice's younger brother Francis took the title of 6th Baron. He too, had numerous of tragedies in his private and professional life. Thankfully, the family seems to being doing much better these days, but those memories must be painful for them to even think of.

@@trademark5124 Definitely. Are you local to the area?
@trademark51244 жыл бұрын
@@floydpitt7590 No, I am not. I take a great interest in the family though, especially Alice, who I think has been unfairly forgotten about as a short piece of rock history with her involvement with Eric Clapton.

Without the furnishings, the incentive to keep the house diminishes, and it's a slippery slope towards abandonment and demolition. Why on earth didn't they just open the house to tours and try to get it featured in the next great house miniseries drama?

The items were sold to raise money to help restore the house. Every single item was sold...which is rare for any Auction.

A lot of this stuff could use one of those KZbin *antique restoration* videos. 😃. Rather than have them decay further until there's nothing left of it, I'd like to see these things be revitalized.

Everything from this auction was sold... Most collectors don't like over restored antiques, old surfaces and lovely paint should be kept unmolested as much as possible. :)
