Gentle Giant. I tried for years to get into that band and could never do it, then about 5 years ago it suddenly all clicked for me. Now I am a huge fan.

For me as of late, the All female Japanese band Band Maid. About 5 years ago I was getting bored, I had listened to everything that I wanted to hear on KZbin, Band Maid kept coming up on my KZbin feed. My musician snobbery rose up in me and I said to myself " I'm not listening to this sh!t , they are too cute (kawaii) and they are dressed like maids, this is an Idol band." I finally got so starved for something new. I finally thought "what the hell" I saw the live version of their song"Play" and their song Blooming I was completely hooked ever since. I don't mind saying that I completely judged a book by it's cover, and so glad that they proved me wrong. OH yes, their musicianship is outstanding.

Band-Maid is amazing. Kanami can really rip when she wants to and Misa is a monster of a bassist

I was born in 1982 and grew up as a child listening to classic rock and metal as a kid and through the 90’s. Led Zeppelin was that for me. I didn’t think it was what everyone was claiming. Then around 25 I inherited a few LZ vinyl records. Suddenly I got it

I couldn't get into King Crimson and Gentle Giant until my early 40s(and I'm a prog rock fan first and foremost). Yes, weird

PRESTO was the first new RUSH album I bought. I heard the two lead tracks on klos, and bought it the day of release. Loved it. I already had 3 hand me down RUSH albums from my brother, and loved every RUSH song on the radio since 1980.

I paused this video to go listen and thanks to this Contrarians episode I finally get BOC 🔥 of Unknown Origin. I could never listen to the b songs for some reason, but now I find them interesting. I actually really like the keyboards in the mix and the album production too. Thanks for another great episode guys. Next I gotta check out that Blue Murder again, been forever. 👍

Bruce Springsteen. I’ve got a very wide range of taste but I could not get into his style for the longest time, even though his hits were very well known. Always liked Dancing in the Dark and I’m on Fire. But I listened to Darkness on the Edge of Town and Nebraska and that changed everything. Man, why I ignored those great albums I don’t know. Glad I got in touch with em when I did.

Welcome David and Dan! This was enjoyable. For me, the main examples of this are probably Iron Maiden and Joy Division. I didn't care about Maiden in high school in the early 80s, couldn't get past the bass sound. Joy Division was just too depressing at first, and not catchy enough. I preferred New Order by far for some time.

Gentle Giant King Crimson Uriah Heep Judas Priest Iron Maiden Rush Jethro Tull Hawkwind Marillion IQ Gillan Pete Pardo is responsible for all those above. Gentle Giant is the one I have tried for 20 years. The Free Hand album made it click. The Steven Wilson remix Three Piece Suite compilation of the first 3 albums cemented it. Gillan might be my favorite band of all time. I would have liked them back in the 80s.

Iron Maiden has two "get it now" moments for me. In high school i really didn't care for Bruce's over the top singing. But in my 20's it just clicked. It all made sense. Something of Seventh Son or Powerslave probably did the trick. My first new record was Brave New World. Liked it but it wasn't like that classic first 7 album run. The newer albums never really made a big impact and i didn't even notice Final Frontier. Before Book of Souls came out i got the Maiden itch again and boy i played that record to death. It also gave me a new appreciation of the other post-reunion albums. I started to love the crunchy hard working older guys production. Now i mostly play the last 6 Maiden albums.

Great show. First hear Rush when Xanadu was played on a rock radio show back around 1979. Loved that song then someone lent me Hemispheres and i wasn't immediately blown away. Was the Max Webster Battlescar single that made me go back and investigate more. With King Crimson it was a video on youtube, cover of Heroes that grabbed me. Haven't heard every album but i tend to lean towards those final lineups with the 3 drummers and the live albums. Probably enjoy watching them more than just listening. Still struggling with Gentle Giant.

Another fun show! And l know Mr. Hens from doing some shows with him on the exquisite Rock Show Critique KZbin channel, out of upstate New York. For a younger cat, he sure knows his music. King Crimson is still quite a very dense, cryptic band for me to get totally into. I love the debut, Red, Discipline and Thrak the best. One from the 60s, one from the 70s, one from the 80s and one from the 90s. Some of the other stuff is impenetrable and hard me to fathom. I’m an odd duck 🦆 when it comes to KC - without The Sunshine Band - quack! Take it easy, gents. Cheers from The Big Apple. 🍏 Rock Out and Prog On! One that comes to mind right away is Talking Heads. During their existence, I just had no use for them ...I tolerated "Burning Down the House" just because they played it so much on MTV that I sort of just waved the white flag and said "okay fine, it's a catchy song, enough already." But otherwise, I just considered it pretentious art student crap, even though it was likely because I just wasn't mature enough to appreciate (or even comprehend) what they were doing, at the time. At one point a few years ago, I was in the car with a friend who had satellite radio on and a song called "This Must Be The Place" was playing and it just captured my attention. I realized right then that I was totally wrong about the band and immediately went out and bought the whole discography.

In the lasy year or so I've been collecting The Fall. When I was younger I'd heard a song from them, wasn't too impressed, it wasn't like straight punk and it wasn't thrash, so I didn't really dig it. Later on, I changed a bit and the this band were really interesting musically and lyrically. Mark E Smith had a very unique mind.

I mistakenly rejected Creedence Clearwater Revival because they were so overplayed on early 80s classic rock radio. I liked their songs, but I had CCR classic hits fatigue when I started buying my own albums. It’s been a blessing in disguise as I can now thoroughly enjoy exploring their albums while skipping the radio hits. Not a single bad album.

You like Mardi Gras too? I've let its bad press affect me so much that I haven't even bothered to check it out. I have all the others, though, and I agree that they're brilliant; at least 4/5 star records each one of them (including the imo underrated debut).

@@askoholli9306 Mardi Gras isn’t their strongest album, but I still think it’s great. As others in the band contributed more and sing instead of John on this one, it’s a refreshing departure from the John Fogerty song writing style and sounds. My favorites on Mardi Gras Need Someone to Hold Someday never comes Sail Away Sweet Hitch-Hiker Door to door Door to Door written and sung by Stu Cook is wildly different and sounds like early cow/country punk. I’m a sucker for when bass players have more influence on the song structure and production of a song. Too often the bass guitar is way in the back of the mix and you can barely hear it….when the bass player has more influence, this encourages the bass guitar to be up front…my preference.

@@apparaoapparao Cool. I guess I should get it. I was already very pleasently surprised when I finally purchased Pendulum some years ago. It isn't usually considered one of their best albums, but it's the one that I've listened easily the most in recent years; many excellent so called deep cuts.

@@askoholli9306 Rude Awakening #2 on Pendulum is one of my favorite CCR tunes. It’s as if John Fogerty had been listening to Ummagumma for days on end and decided to write an epic country psychedelic tune…again it’s the refreshing departures from the creole swamp sounds….with that said, Effigy remains my top CCR song…if rock and roll is about questioning tradition/authority, sticking it to man…it doesn’t get more to the core than this one.

Here’s a thing, hen you come to an artist or band late and have a big catalogue to catch up on like Rush, I’ve found the catalogue tends to be ranked differently to a life long fan. Anyway , a lot of prog to me is a lockdown listening project so there are a few, but the most recent that took a while are King Crimson and just the last month Gentle Giant. As for a huge band then The Who , knew the hits obviously, but the last 6 months something clicked and can’t get enough of all the classic Who albums.

Interesting how Whitesnake broke late in the USA/Canada In Europe me and many others prefer their albums until (and including) Slide it In. 1987 was a sellout to America with old songs re-recorded in slicker style. A great album but far more average than their earlier work.

It`s embarassing. I just did not get the early sound of Saxon. So I was only listen to the later more commercial sound of Saxon in the late 80s. Later on I realised that the early stuff was really great. So weird back then. If I heard something from let`s say 1980 it was old when I heard it in 1987 haha..crazy

It took me a very long time for Bob Dylan. The reason why was because I wasn’t listening to his lyrics and putting that with his voice and guitar playing and it finally made sense. And since then Dylan is more punk and rock than most. I mean go listen to Highway 61 revisited. Very cynical, and edgy especially for 1965. He’s truly ahead of everyone.
