Not a single mention of N’golo/Engolo nor Mestre Cobra Mansa & Matthias Röhrig Assunção really undermines the research you’ve put into this video, Mandingueiro.

i think whats 'contraversial' about capoeira history hasnt really been covered here. there is lots to comment on; capoeira originates from racial conflict, there are aspects of afrocentricism within capoeira angola, the fascist context within the origins of capoeira regional, cultural appropriation of capoeira within 'movement culture', serial child abuse from CDO since 1997 etc.!

Great documentary. Went to the souce to see the relationship between legend and reality. Bahia has a strong African retention in all aspects of its culture. Capoeira is no different. I've been Roda where Africans that never seen Capoeira jump right in with some resembles of the game. Like it comes naturally. It's amazing to witness.

You were showing videos from the practice of Danmye Ladja which is practiced in Marinque, and there was historical and anthropological reports of a style called Knocking and kicking which was practiced by afro descended people in North America and Juego de Mani in Cuba. Being that all 4 of these nations had enslaved Africans, it's not a "mystery" on where it comes from, simply racially/politically motivated intellectual dishonesty.

are you saying tom hasnt acknowledged the relationship between capoeira, danmye ladja, and knocking and kicking OR are you saying capoeira has roots from africa, becuase the latter 2 forms do ? (I agree with both points here!)
@angel1321009 ай бұрын
@D1FunKD I am saying both, and I am primarily focusing on the deliberate avoidance of its clearly African roots as means of making capoeira a Brazilian, which is a deliberate attempt to slowly manuever the afro descended i.e. black people from it's history. To call something "Brazilian" is ambiguous in terms of name. The way Brazil is depicted to the world, we don't associate blackness to it. But to call it capoeira Afro- Brazilian makes its clear on where capoeira originated which is the blacks that were sociopolitically suppressed and still are.

@D1FunKD the bottom line is yoi can't talk about Capoeira without talking about transatlantic slave trade, which means you can't talk about it without talking about white supremacy(racism) which means you can't talk about it without talking about black Africans
@D1FunKD9 ай бұрын
@@angel132100double agreed! I dont think tom has deliberately avoided talking about the african roots, moreso just used 'little capoeira book' as reference which to me has outdated since its publication (1986!) - there has been a ton of research on the origins of capoeira which from my reading points to various cultural forms that existed in africa, the cocktailing of tribes by slave masters to prevent uprising, subsequently forcing hybridisation of those form etc!

@D1FunKD point take, and perhaps I should have been more clear. I did NOT intend to accuse him of being obtuse, but bring light to what is often swept under the rug

Please explain why you said "enslaved by the white man" , when before that, you said "an explorer from Portugal tried to enslave the Brazilian indians" ...did I miss something, were they white or Portugese, the enslavers?
