Not necessarily. I would definitely say that to Iraq and Afghanistan for those who are opposing tyranny and fighting for freedom from extremists. Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) “The Past, Present, and Future of U.S. Assistance to Ukraine: A Deep Dive into the Data” There are no “blank checks” going to Ukraine. In fact, the only thing Ukraine has gotten from the US is decades old, obsolete hardware and munitions that, up until the Ukraine war began the US DOD was accepting bids for companies to come and dispose of it. $62B of a recent $67B “Ukraine Aid” package never left the U.S. and went directly to US DOD contractors in 71 US cities in 32 US states for new equipment for our troops. This $62B was taken from the $67B “Ukraine Aid” package to “pay ourselves back” for the obsolete hand me downs we sent to Ukraine. The US Government is in no position to be calling anyone in the Ukraine government corrupt.

You realize that makes you look like the bad guy, right? You volunteer by choice to fight in a foreign war of aggression in someone else's country, for America... but then when another country comes to ask America for help fighting a foreign aggressor that's invading their country, you turn your back on them. You volunteered for the wrong war my friend. I understand war fatigue and bitter resentment at being lied to by your government. But how you live your life moving forward is how you will be judged in the end. I work in healthcare, so an analog for me, would be me refusing to treat anyone ever again, if I accidentally killed someone in the past. Failing to learn from our mistakes and move forward in life only compounds the damage of our past decisions, it doesn't mitigate it. I think not enough nuance is discussed, especially among many of us that are probably right-leaning. That's why I really enjoyed this conversation. We need to remember multiple things can be true at once, we don't need to hate Ukraine just because we don't want to send so much money with no endgame strategy. Some nuanced things that are true: 1. Russia is intentionally targetting and murdering civilians 2. Both sides are sending out lots of propaganda 3. Ukraine is corrupt ( and Russia is also very corrupt) 4. We are probably sending too money that is lining the pockets of Ukrainian officials, US politicians, and the military industrial complex So no, fellow people on the right, just because Ukraine is corrupt doesn't mean Russia is good. Just because Ukraine might have poked the bear, doesn't mean Russia is justified in its invasion. Ukraine has a right to defend itself from its aggressor. Just because the politicians are lining their pockets with war doesn't mean there aren't real people, real innocent families being made to suffer in war that need our help and generosity. We can make our points about not sending a blank check to Ukraine without falling into a "Ukraine bad" mantra. We also don't need to virtue signal in support of Ukraine. We just need to look at the issue in terms of the US's interests in the area, and how we can maybe relieve some of the suffering going on.

One problem with the aid discussion is that significant portions of US "aid to Ukraine" aren't actually for Ukraine, they're extra allotments for general NATO maneuvers in Eastern Europe. While these are technically relevant to the Ukrainian situation, you'd never actually see that impact on the ground directly. Further, the trouble with "they can't afford gear or med kits" just comes down to the reality of fighting a war without the proper structure in place to do so. Even aside from potential corruption, Ukraine has horrible Soviet-era bureaucracy problems that delay or obscure funds. The people in the system trying to do good are often fighting against other people in the system trying to do good because that's how inefficient bureaucracies usually work. Not to deny that corruption, deal-making, etc. hasn't been relevant, but even if the government spent its aid perfectly, ~$40b for a wartime economy of 40 million people really isn't that much money to work with. So I disagreed on most of that stuff. But thanks so much for a unique perspective and highlighting someone doing really great stuff in the world. I really enjoyed listening to this, even if it was very hard to hear at times.

Where was the concern since 2014 as Kiev was killing their own citizens in the Donbas? Neither side is clean in this. US/NATO provoked for years, and the Bear woke up. War crimes, both sides. A ceasefire & humanitarian aid should be the only priority at this point.

Just as a point of focus, I wonder how much of this civilian execution and targeting is done by Russian regulars, vs. The infamous Wagner group and their prisoner conscription. Now I am not authority on the subject and have no basis of comparison for this thought, but with all of the conflicting evidence and reports on Russian soldiers and their.... behavior.... I can't help but think there is some blurring of the lines (as I'm sure we are all aware). I follow Willy OAM on KZbin, a journalist who spends alot of time interviewing soldiers on the front from both sides of the conflict and has spent time on the ground, and it seems from his testimony (among many others I have been trying to cross reference just for my own interest and understanding) that you get interactions that are cordial and professional (specifically from Russian paratroopers and other SOF groups in Russia) and then you get outright atrocities committed by Russian actors that are *often* never identified. It goes without saying I am not taking Russian government's side nor am I in any way implying that it is excusable no matter the circumstances. I just wonder if history will give us another shining example of why oversight and policing of your forces is necesarry, lest they be free to (or encouraged even) to do as they please in war time.

Not the whole military. They are the azov battalion or something like that. They do not hide the fact either. That's an incredible deed Chad did for the Fox Journalist. In the future, I do hope brave men like him come to question the war and understand why it happened and who is responsible. The fact is: while Russia has blood on their hands for the invasion...their actions are the culmination of 30 years of US-led NATO expansion since the fall of the USSR. The western states have repeatedly violated promises and made aggressive posture towards Russia on top of instilling regime change in Ukraine, and members within the DoD and intelligence warned against our Eastern Europe foreign policy. We can't act all shocked just because Russia finally decided to do something about it.
@overhead182 жыл бұрын
What "promises" were violated? Were the promises made by people authorized to make such guarantees? Was it in a treaty? What aggressive stance has NATO taken toward Russia, specifically? Attempting to discourage them from trying to reestablish the Russian empire is not aggressive, it is defensive.

@@overhead18 lol yes, it was HW Bush and his Secretary of State, James Baker's explicit promise to Gorbachev to not extend NATO one inch eastward of central Germany. Every president since has expanded NATO. Then we backed TWO coup d'etats within 10 years to establish pro-western leaders in Ukraine. Until they were right on Russia's front yard with weapon systems that are both offensive and defensive. The lie you are sold is that Putin is an tyrannical imperialist. The truth is that Russia's grievances have been ignored and theyve been forced to watch for 30 years as the US builds a military alliance outside its borders. The real imperialists are the US led west, and if the last 20 years of middle eastern conflict weren't enough to show you that, idk what to tell you. We had a plan to do regime change in 7 different arab nations and were successful with 3 of them.
@Mygg_Jeager2 жыл бұрын
No it's not. NATO hasn't expanded in Asia and yet that hasn't stopped China from invading every single one of its neighbours in one way or another. Russia is doing the exact same thing, regardless of NATO. It's NATO's inaction that enabled this, not NATO's actions. You may as well blame Jeffrey Dahmer's landlord for Jeffrey Dahmer's crimes with that kind of faulty logic.
