My problems with horse racing: Whipping Age Pressure on the horses legs
@madi.equestriansj

@Julia Jankowska but we don’t jump horse 1m20cm as 2 year olds we wait until they are 4 or older to start jumping or riding and they don’t get up to the high fences for a while so they have time to adapt and build muscle
@bella-xg8td

The whips are engineered to be softer than the average crop. They are foam-padded and make a slapping noise whilst being applied. Horses can get welts when the whips are overused, but jockeys try not to. Pressure on the horses legs is the same as jumping. Weight comes down hard on the fragile legs of jumpers when they land on their forelegs after a jump. Same in horse racing. Both types of legs can handle it, unless there is an accident, which happens in both sports. Same in cross-country.

@@bella-xg8td I agree with you on the pressure on the horses legs but at the age many race horses are it’s too much pressure in my opinion

@@madi.equestriansj First off, I respect your opinion ;) Scientific evidence has proved that horses who are *ready* to begin racing at a young age actually can benefit from it. Horses have bones that adapt. If you train a horse right, they build what is called "breeze bone" that helps prevent the bone from snapping whilst running. So, actually, instead of breaking down the bones like people think, correct training, breezing, and the age the horse is ready to begin racing - some horses it it is two, others three or older - can build UP a horse's bones.

@@madi.equestriansj Sadly, modern American trainers don't understand how imperative it is to discard the traditional training methods and begin to focus on bone and muscle science and condition to train their horses. There is so much on the best way to train a racehorse I can't write it all out xD

I personally believe horseracing should be able to continue but under much stricter regulations as way to many horses die in the US and AUS from it, but i do believe a lot of owners and trainers really do care about their horses. I just think the bad ones need to be removed from the sport and much stricter regulations.

I dont think drugs should be used on horses. Yes, medications that are neccessary for horses are ok but the reason these horses are on pain killers is because of racing. And yes it helps some countries but exploiting animals is wrong in every way to me, especially in horse racing. They're seen as money cows

Tedward Cullenary coming from a point of experience, many horses are not on painkillers, etc. when they are racing as many of these substances are banned and will come up on post-race swab tests. For example, have a look at Alligator Blood (horse) and that controversy recently in Aus. Horses that are injured or even slightly sore do go out to the paddock for a rest (which can be a few weeks or many months). I know where I work that our horses are regularly given trot-ups to check for signs of lameness and have regular vet visits if there is something wrong. You simply cannot generalise a whole industry from a few instances of abuse or neglect. Unfortunately all sports and disciplines will have bad eggs but as a whole, that does not make the sport bad.

I myself, whom is in the industry, agree with this point/topic. From all my racing experience, there is no proven point in drugs. In the early 2010s, I used Lasik on my racehorses (keep in fact that I was still pretty new to the industry at the time) and used it as a prevention. After a year or so, I started used a Flair Strip and Lasik on all my horses. After a year of more education and learning experience, I realized how much money I was wasting and how stupid I looked, so I decided to start using the Flairstrip only, and it's worked, both on my bleeders and non bleeders. The racing industry is trying their best to handle the situation. By 2021, Lasik will be banned on major American tracks and hopefully, in the future, Lasik will be completely banned. Fees have doubled for a positive drug-test, and the amount of time to pay the fees have made it harder to pay them. If you don't pay, it's a suspension. The list of illegal substances have doubled, maybe even tripled, and I sure am glad. I hope that theu make a 1 strike and your out kind of thing. If your horse is positive, your "out" (suspended). *LASIK is a legal substance used to prevent bleeders from bleeding*

Personally, I think that the idea of "horse racing" isn't bad. The concept of thoroughbreds running against one another is phenomenal and unique. Although, people in this industry have taken it to a whole new level. The amount of cons overwhelm the positives, which is why I said no to actually becoming a professional jockey.

Yes, the idea is good, but the horses are forced to run at dangerous speeds. But why can't people just leave it at that? Performance enhancing drugs? Really? Why can't horses at least be raced in their natural state, no drugs, wiping, or shocking.

I personally think that one of the positives of horse racing is how well some of them take care of their horses. Of course, some aren't cared for as well as others, but most of the time they get pretty good care. (Like grooming, stable time, pasture time, etc.) The thing I am most against though, is how young they get put onto the track. 2 years old? Seriously? Running races? That should be illegal. People say that horses don't have emotions, but *all* animals have emotions. Breaking in a horse at *2* years old damages their mental health more than some people might know. The suggested age to even put WEIGHT on your horse is 3 and a half years old. NOT 2 years old. I feel like it should just be banned altogether. The weekly rate for horse deaths in jockey racing is 24 per week. 24 racehorses die every week due to racing. I know people are going to come at me, but if it's a sport that kills animals it should be illegal. Yes, all horses do die in every sport. However, it is mostly to natural causes, not because they slipped on a wet track and collapsed because of how young they are. I feel the same way about rodeos. If it kills animals, *IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL.* Edit: Some people might get confused so I'm going to clear this up ahead of time: When I refer to rodeos, I'm talking about the ones where they get unbroken horses and try to break them in, or zap 500 bolts of electricity (My memory is a little fuzzy on this) into a horse and they take off bucking. It causes horses pain and horses die from it. I've seen a horse have its leg torn off, dangling by a thread after being thrown in with its predators. It is abusive, cruel, and needs to be illegal.

Just want to pop in and say I have been around people who live ON the racetrack (like San Luis Ray Downs) and have done extensive and life-long research, and I myself have researched extensively, and the horse racing industry is not the only equestrian sport that has problems like these. Cross country, jumping, both of these sports also have drugs and abuse. I've seen horses abused in dressage. I wish people would realize that each equine sport has problems of their own. Running, racing, is something that horses have done for centuries. Mustangs can run over 12 miles a day up to 50 mph on rough terrain, and Thoroughbreds are BRED to run and they love it - it comes naturally. Just like horses love to jump and their legs can withstand the mass and weight that comes down on their "fragile" forelegs every time they land a jump, our horses can withstand running, like the Mustangs. I am not defending the entirety of the racing industry, because there IS fraud, abuse, and drugs, I will not deny it. But I cannot just turn my back on it, because we can fight to change it, and I'm not going to walk away from this industry and join - let's say - cross-country thinking I'll get away from all the bad stuff, because I will find the same abuse, drugs, and death there, as well. The racing industry is the only sport that counts their deaths. It is the only sport that has the Supreme Court and the government and laws involved within. And people are continuously fighting to make it a better place. I am fighting, my friends are fighting, and a law was just passed that we all hope will make some differences. I am not saying this to you, Horse Source, but to others: please educate yourselves before saying things like "racing is very bad for horses, I wish they would stop racing." Running is a natural occurrence, and with the proper training, horses can very much withstand the demand of racing. They have bones that adapt. Drugs don't happen with every trainer, and drugs also don't happen all the time in jumping, for example, but there has been doping in high-level jumping many times. It's not just the sport I love dearly, and that helped me get through an extremely hard spot in my life. Please educate yourselves, thank you. If you want any questions answered, I can answer them, and then make up your mind whether or not it is something that should be stopped. :))

I forgot, running horses at a young age actually helps develop their bones for later years. But it very much depends on the horse. Zenyatta wasn't ready to race as a youngster, and that was beneficial to her, the way her connections waited. But Secretariat was.
