ANYONE CAN WHISTLE opened on Broadway on April 4 1964 and closed after a few performances. It would be all but forgotten if not for the Original Broadway Cast recording, which preserved the songs, albeit, not all of them intact and complete. Because all the Dance Music, whether within the songs and on their own, were not recorded, they were all practically forgotten. Happily JAY recorded Sondheim’s Masterwork’s Complete and revealed it to be very much a Dance Musical. It was confirmed by the fact that the only Tony nomination the original production received was for Herb Ross’ Choreography. So to honour the fateful opening of ANYONE CAN WHISTLE on Broadway, we present the most Complete Recording of THE COOKIES CHASE with the brilliant orchestrations of Don Walker. As played by the National Symphony Orchestra, it revealed that the extended piece was written in the mode and style of a European Operetta.
