I bought a 92 Astro Van just like yours almost 10 years ago from a dealer who does nothing other than flip fleet vehicles.. It had 52,000 miles on it, he had just had it repainted, it had no rust and was very clean..I paid $3400. Still have it, it now has there 75,000 miles on it. One day a few years later, in the winter, I left my old dog in the van for quite a while, the old guy had go so bad he peed all over the driver seat... As I was cleaning out the seat, I reached into the crack to fish out whatever was in there, pulled out an old hacksaw blade ballpoint pen and a fancy gold Gucci ring worth $2000! ...I'm assuming the van was so clean with low miles, it had been driven by a supervisor (or?) and he picked up his girlfriend or whoever put his wedding ring into his pocket and it wound up in the drivers seat. My girlfriend was there when I found it and it fit her perfectly I offered it to her but told her if she put it on we were engaged, she handed it right back to me. Still have the girlfriend but sold the ring for the gold a few years ago. I got $1,400 for it.

It's a misconception these were S10 based due to them sharing hubcaps and even an alloy wheel design [they're not interchangeable] they were really more descended from C10, Chevy Caprice and the Cadillac commercial chassis. They used 5x5 pattern wheels like the full size trucks and vans, while the S10 was 5x4.75. The Astro had a subframe that's basically a modified front half of a Caprice frame. These vans were great because in a way they were really like a full size van, shrunken down to a bit more manageable size. As a result they were overbuilt in some ways and could take a lot of abuse over the years.

I always liked the way they looked....Only problem is their poor crash test rating... If your hit head-on going 35MPH or faster you would get pinned in and the engine compartment would usually catch fire. It's yet another GM product that the executives decided it was cheaper to pay out lawsuits for crash victims than to change or cancel the design.

I was waiting for the video of this van! I think I already commented and told you about my dad's 1995 Astro. I had it redone 2 years ago with a new paint job, new wheels and a few minor mechanical things to keep it running like new. It has been a fantastic van. He purchased it with 60,000 miles and it now has 97,000 and it's still going strong. His also used to surge badly until he replaced the spider injectors and that took care of the surging issue. As for the slow starting, his used to slow start occasionally on days when it was raining or mornings where it rained the night before. We replaced the distributor cap, rotor plug, spark plugs, wires and fuel filter as a tune up to see if that was the surging issue. None of that fixed it until we had the spider injectors done and that took care of it. However, we did notice after replacing the distributor cap, rotor plug, spark plugs and wires that the van no longer slow started on rainy days anymore. We had a mechanic do a compression test on it and found out the fuel pump was not bad so we didn't need to replace that. I noticed your sliding door is tough to get open. Ours has always been kind of like that even though it got slightly better after cleaning out the sliding track. Try sticking one finger in the slider area on the body and use that finger to pull the door out while pulling on the handle with your other hand and you'll see it helps pull the door out so it can slide open. Replacing the EGR valve also helped with a rough idle and strong fuel smell our van had. I hope this info helps you out some with your Astro! Look forward to seeing more content of this van!

I grew up with these, my father is an antique dealer and my parents had about half a dozen they put over a million miles on them. They had the same matching his and hers base astros for about 10 years. Dads was a dark brown 86 Astro CS and moms was a gunmetal gray 88 Astro CS, both were a full window vans, and the latter was my first car... later we had more plush models, the base ones were definitely stiff riding. having the half panel is cool check out Chevy Astro RS and GMC Safari GT.. If I had yours it would become a clone of them, they are very rare and look great in white here is a crazy coincidence, my parents always had the "1" key chain too!

I got a 92 as a US Forest Service Van. It's a teal color with what's left of the paint (yours looks way better in that regard.) I swapped in a 383 and am going to do a Ford 9 inch. Definitely a heck of a lot more fun than the 4.3L is! Hope she moves well. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who got one of these without a dome light switch. I can't believe that was even an option. That being a TBI shouldn't be bad to swap a 350 from a truck into and nets you 80 ft-lbs and 45-50hp probably.

I picked up a 1995 conversion van with 130k miles at my local Volunteers of America auction for $425 before fees. My dad had a 93 EXT and a 99 while I was growing up which were both bulletproof, even though he used them for work and they were beat on. The 93 was still driving around at 225k after he sold it, and he traded the 99 (no issues) for a Chevy Avalanche. I knew I just had to have the 95, as I was about to buy a house and I needed a work and moving vehicle. Best purchase I've ever made. Just needed a brake line and a hydro brake booster. Runs perfectly, and I have driven it out of state more than once with no problems. Side note, the 1995 model year is the oddball one, being a gen 1 van with the gen 2 nose, with parts going one way or the other. I see that yours has the TBI version of the 4.3. The CPI engine, introduced as an option from 92+, made 190HP. Mine has the CPI engine. Both great. The TBI version definitely makes it easier to swap over to a 350. It's as close as you can get to bolt in. Even the accessories are the same. Regarding the ride quality, it seems like they all ride like trucks. I enjoy it in a sentimental sort of way. Also great for dragging busted up concrete in the back due to the truck suspension. It definitely seems like the gen 2 vans (96+) ride better from my experience. I think part of it has to do with GM switching from a single composite leaf spring on each back corner to traditional stacked steel leafs in late 95. One of the best vehicles ever mass produced.

I too love these old vans. The minivans, and the full-size beasts like the Ford Club Wagon/Econoline, and the Dodge Ram Vans! True American workhorses. And as you said, they're so versatile. They could be used for anything, especially the full-size vans...and that's one thing I really like about them. I think another reason I also have so much appreciation for them, is that so many people are just quick to discard them...It's not a Mustang, or a Corvette or any other classic muscle car, so they just turn a blind eye. I love old vans!

I replaced distributor cap, coils, tps, iac valve, plugs and a shop said I had a bad plug wire. But I guess a common issue is coil issues. Decent buy for the money. It's a running, driving cargo van with no rust. Most places buying junk cars are paying a few hundred dollars so in my opinion you did good. I too just picked up a 2005 Astro van with just under 129k on the odometer as a surplus vehicle in lower DE. Paid about $500 more than I wanted but as others pointed out, they are damn good work vans with a classic look about them. They aren't the annoyingly small mini van nor are the they the obnoxiously over sized full size fan that one might have trouble getting into a parking garage with a ladder strapped to the top. Must be something with the drivers side window on auction Astro vans, the regulator is cracked on mine which causes the window to not go all the way up. I'm not surprised by the lower DE fix though, rain guards were installed rather than replacing the regulator. Just to give you a heads up, the vanity tag CANDVAN is no longer available in DE.

I believe the TBI engines around this time had the MAP sensor up on the air cleaner connected to the throttle body by a vacuum hose. The hose itself is rigid and will eventually fracture causing a minor vacuum leak. Once this happens you start to develop carbon build up in the vacuum port of the throttle body itself. This will cause the bogging on heavy acceleration. Once you get the doghouse off fire it up and listen for a vacuum leak around the air cleaner/throttle body area.

Own a 2000 AWD with 143,000 miles and it is bulletproof! You may need valve cover gaskets and a fuel regulator system ($800) around 125,000 (just starts hard) but other than that it will run forever. You hit a home run!

Cool find , my parents used to own a 1995 Chevy Astro with 250.000 miles , umm these vans were meant for industrial duties unlike the Dodge Caravans which wouldn't last for very long . We owned the van for over 20+years with no major issues .

Whether your Chevy ASTRO or GMC Safari van is a passenger or cargo hauler, these were a very unique and versatile vehicle for personal, recreational or commercial use. They sold by the millions and I still don't know why GM discontinued the product. I also don't understand why no one else has filled the void to produce an equivalent to this vehicle. A SUBURBAN comes close to fulfilling the versatility of these vans, but that's at three times the cost.

I Would Focus On The Main Intention and Keep It! Especially, as You Mentioned with The Economy and What You Made On The Aerostar. Either Way, it has Great Potential and would make a Decent Work Truck for a Handy Man.. Best of luck with it..

Have a 1990 Rally Sport since new. Would buy another just like it if they still made'em. The best way to open the slide door, Use your right hand on the door handle, and your left pinky on the left, in the slot, by the rear corner panel, and pull towards you. Presto! Works every time! 216k on mine.

My Brother has the GMC Safari 2001 and his has been in a rollover on black ice where the engine wanted to keep going, got top fixed with straightened that eventually went back to a minor bent though not like before, with a black primer coating over the paint missing spot, a back side window was replaced that can't do anything being fixed in place with a window used from an Asro van all for $1500 or so, and is still running fine today even though the van had 2-3 year of life after the accident. I don't remember if Alternator got replaced or not but if not it needs it. Had to by older owner get new starter parts as the old one was known to catch fire in the 2000-2001 models so it has 2 key's one for opening and one for starter. He needs to fix the car a tad now to get it fully running again after sitting for a year. He went to see a grandparent in California before he passed and from State Capital of South Dakota he went to Lompoc where grandpa lives all on the original tires. he got new tires for birthday, he was going to get new ones anyhow. The wreak caused the spare tire to fall off and is in the back of the Van with the part that held the spare in place cut off. The Van has a bunch of miles yet is still going today. Oh and a police noticed da tail light was not red so he bashed off driver side mirror when leaving away in vehicle on a gravel road with a rock, so brother has now a older non power mirror unlike the other side. The tail light has been fixed permanently to vehicle with glue. My brother has done just about everything that could kill the van with the roll over and it is still going today or will be soon.

A cool old van. I like it. I use to have a 1973 Dodge van. My brother and I built a bed in the back. We drove it Florida and over the south. We get tired we pull over and take a nap. lol. We basically lived in it for three years, lol. What happen to the Aerostar Van? Thanks for sharing the video. Stay safe and well my friend.

Thanks for the video! When you said the AC was converted what did you mean? I’m looking at a 1994 Astro and he said there was never an AC in this, only heat. Trying to look up how to install that later down the line if I buy this👍🏼
@hullinger
@hullinger 3 жыл бұрын
That is correct in that the A/C was converted from R12 refrigerant to the current type R134. The conversion didn't add the A/C components but simply the type of refrigerant used. Good luck on your A/C project.

Look for the oil cooler lines to leak. Rear main seal, the manifold seals can leak and that's a big tear down. Trash it after that, big big job. It is a cool looking van. If I get 3yrs out of it I call it good.

I loved the Aerostar, reason is my Dad had a cream colored 1990 XL base RWD he bought used in fall of 93. Had maybe close to 50k I'm guessing when bought it and had only little over 100k when got rid of it. Was it a good vehicle? Not really! It wasn't in best condition when he bought it as the previous owner of it probably hardly ever washed it or waxed it because it had some rust bubbles that my Dad had some bodywork done right after buying it and added a contrasting brown bodystripe to go with the interior. It looked nice for maybe about a year or so then after that started rusting badly till he finally got rid of it in 99 was leaking coolant bad as well as burning oil was replaced with a laser red colored 98 Ford Windstar GL van which that van held up much better and was pretty reliable had that till about 2006 then it was still solid with small scabby rust on rockers but nonetheless still looked nice cause we always washed it and waxed it since we've owned it! Had 77,000 miles on it with the 3.8 V6 by time got rid of it had almost another 100k so he got his money out of it! Anyways the Aerostar was special because it defined a good part of my childhood memories going to Sea World, Geauga Lake and many other places with my family and my Dad was proud because he finally got a minivan which seemed like an accomplishment in the 90s with the trend that is with SUVs today LOL so for the time it was cool and it earned my respect same with the grey 86 Celebrity he also had at the time 2 cars that defined that time period for me. 👍

My dad bought one new and sold it to me about 1970. The main thing I remember That was different was that my speedometer went beyond 70 to 100 if I recall correctly. I drove it coast to coast and back and cruised over 80 in it in the wide open spaces. It would do 90 but any more and I wasn¡t happy with how it handled. My father didn’t special order it - he wasn't at all geeky that way - so evidently they made some optioned up beasts you could buy off the show room floor. It had the 4 speed manual and different striped upholstery. Don't remember the year. In Retrospect that boxer 6 that Chevrolet designed was an excellent copy of Mr. Porsche's engines and they got it right first time. They famously had plenty of very powerful engines in the sedans - and those were the ones that attracted Mr Nader's attention which led to the car's demise despite Chevrolet fixing the swing axle problem. My dad loved the rear engine rear drive because he didn’t have to put skid chains on to get up the hill. It is nice to see one is such good shape. Well done.
