Great song hey? The second version you played is closer to the way EC plays it. It doesn't initially have the 3rd (G#) of the E chord like the first version (regular open E shape) does. Then hammer on from 5 to 7 on the A string while still playing the open E string, then add the G# on the 6th fret of the D string just before the A chord you play, but rather than the A bar chord, try an Esus4 type thing at the 7th fret (open 6th string, 7th fret on A and D strings, so it's an E, plus another E an octave up, plus the A above that higher E). Fairly sure this is the only way EC plays it on record and live. There's a few recent live clips with Marcy Levy where you can check it out. Cheers mate, great channel

@@richardkenna149 Thanks, I totally see what you're saying. It's also interesting (but unsurprising) that the other guitarist takes over the riff when EC sings his parts. It would take some work to be able to sing and play the riff together. Cheers for that!
