In John Milton's Paradise Lost, Satan took the form of a cormorant while spying on adam and eve when he entered the garden of eden. Scary bird.

You’re kidding me - I did not remember that. Haven’t read it in over a decade. I’m mentioning that very scene briefly in the latest Paglia review on Patreon, as she was discussing it having been influenced by Spenser’s “The Faerie Queene”. Wish I would’ve caught that in time, thank you very much.

Just finished The Cormorant. Thanks so much for the brilliant recommendation. I had to check this one out, being from Snowdonia myself. The vivid descriptions of the oppressive weather and landscapes were so beautifully written. All the descriptions in the book, from the cosy cottage to the repulsive bird, are all so vivid and tactile. Great read! Thanks Cliff

"Corvus" is also Latin for "raven" or "crow", and was a boarding device the Roman Republic deployed in the First Punic War. (To great effect.) The device was a sort of beak at the end of a boarding plank that punched into and held a rival galley in place, thereby allowing Rome to leverage its superior heavy infantry at sea.

Woah! Thanks for stopping by Peter, I'd love to see your adaptation some time, do you know where we can find it? Looks mysterious, great casting choice with Ralph Fiennes. Yes it's a tragic loss - Rest in Peace Stephen Gregory.

@@BetterThanFoodBookReviews It used to be on KZbin but no longer, it seems. I have it on archaic tape formats so should see if I can get it transferred to something current. Stephen appears in it briefly. So saddened by his loss. He was kindness personified. I worked with Ralph Fiennes again on The English Patient, on which I directed 2nd Unit. I like to think that I have in some modest way passed on something of Stephen’s penchant for distinctive, unsettling horror. My former student Ari Aster has put his own singular vision up on the screen with Hereditary and Midsommar.

This bird is an environmental pain in the archipelago of the Baltic Sea. Their colonies are a total destruction of trees and other vegetation on the little rocky islands they like for nesting. As their habitat deteriorates they have started to spread to the mainland, inland even. If you have a property on the coast near cormorant colonies, you will be deeply worried. It is a returning species in the Baltic Sea region. It vanished by the early 1900s because of hunting and has been coming back since the 1980s. The excrement of the bird is what kills trees, causes smell that spreads with the wind and overall makes their environment damaged for people, but also for other birds and animals. I wish somebody wrote a story like this about a dog.

I think people project maybe a little too much onto animals. I can understand in the case of cormorants though, with their black oily plumage and their mean looking eyes, but to be honest they aren't particularly intelligent. Dumb as posts when compared to a raven.
