Actually, the king, having been anointed with Holy Oil, is a deacon participating in the Holy Priesthood of Our Blessed Lord. However, England having fallen from the Catholic Faith & with it, the Monarchy, this no longer applies. I even doubt that the Oils have been validly consecrated.

As regards the recognition its likely its a hangover from the Anglo-Saxon election of a throne worthy son to the throne. The 'so be it' would've been dropped as primogeniture became established during the middle ages - but that election was never inevitable. Like you say the gradual development of the coronation is remarkable and why it remains relevant.

Thank you so much for this insight, Allan. It's a fascinating subject, as you say, I think because the Oath is a moving target, having to adapt to the times, both political and geographical. David Starkey has said a lot on this recently, including uploads to KZbin, and got pretty hot under the collar that the specific and legislated reference to parliamentary government post-Glorious Revolution has become emasculated into 'their respective laws and customs'. But then, Starkey falls flat on his face by saying Charles III isn't being crowned King of Canada, etc, which, of course, he is!

It would be great to have a video on the historical importance of the Coronation music. As the sovereign enters the Abbey a setting of Psalm 122 (I was glad) is sung. Since 1902 this has been the setting by Parry which incorporates the acclamations "Vivat Regina" and "Vivat Rex" sung by the King's Scholars of Westminster School, who have the right to be the first commoners to acclaim the new sovereign at their Coronation.

We don't know yet, the late Queen's coronation in 1953 lasted two hours and twenty five minutes.

From what I’m reading so far, Charles appears to be watering down or scrapping much of the ceremony. Restricted attendance, casual dress for attendees and military uniform for the king. If this is truly going to be only a 1 hour ceremony, there is a lot that is being removed from it. Too bad, with today’s modern temporary seating abilities, they could easily have put up fireproof grandstands. This is going to look no different than a commonwealth day or remembrance day service, which is a shame.
@malopephasha5341 Жыл бұрын
it will be reduced but not that much, Charles is traditionalist, it will be modern but traditional at the same time

We did have a Republic with Oliver Cromwell after the beheading of King Charles 1st. But Cromwell was a dictator who appointed his son as his successor, in other words tried to start a new dynasty. Republics tend to go that way, think of Napoleon and all the new Tsar equivalents in Russia. Our Constitutional Monarchy separates the Power from the Glory. Instead nurturing perpetual left/right conflict (as now in the USA) it brings overall stability, which is well suited to the British temperament.

Well, Henry VIII split from Rome & turned England Protestant so he could separate from his 1st Wife Catherine of Aragon - but this was finessed as 'an annulment'. George IV married Caroline of Brunswick after having secretly married Maria Fitzherbert, whom he had NOT divorced & who remained alive, thereby actually committing bigamy. Maria Fitzherbert was given a decent allowance & she remained tight-lipped & very loyal to George, even though they stopped seeing each other, dedicating her life to good works.
