In my opinion the best coaches make the weakest players try harder by not picking them out for every mistake they make. By picking the player next to him (which really wasn't anywhere near as bad) he made the even "worse" player correct himself and make him start to think for himself about the mistakes that he made. If you constantly tell a player their mistakes, they will rely on everyone one else to correct them.
