The Leaving Of Liverpool lyrics by The High Kings Fare thee well to Prince's Landing Stage River Mersey, fare thee well I am bound for California It's a place that I know right well So fare thee well, my own true love And when I return united we will be It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me But my darling when I think of thee I have signed on a Yankee clipper ship Davy Crockett is her name And Burgess is the captain of her And they say that she's a floating shame So fare thee well, my own true love And when I return united we will be It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me But my darling when I think of thee I have sailed with Burgess once before He's a man that I know right well If a man is a sailor, he can get along And if not, then he is sure in Hell So fare thee well, my own true love And when I return united we will be It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me But my darling when I think of thee Oh the sun is on the harbour, love And I wish I could remain For I know it will be a long, long time Before I see you again So fare thee well, my own true love And when I return united we will be It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me But my darling when I think of thee So fare thee well, my own true love And when I return united we will be It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me But my darling when I think of thee [from: www.bellsirishlyrics.com/leaving-of-liverpool.html]

Can't work out how to create a video response if I didn't upload the video myself, and youtube won't let me post the link, either. If you like this, check out Corrie Folk Trio version. I like it even better. It's Roy on verses 1 and 3, Bill Smith on 2 and 4. The video should show up right next to this.

this video ripped out , threw them on the floor and stepped on them , then shoved them back in my head. I still can hardly digest what I just saw and heared. it was like stepping in to a time machine. now I think I finaly understand the beatles progression formulas. these corries sure know how to lay it on thick like a speed run of zelda oot in slow motion. I underestimated the value of older music that time doesn't supprise me I can't play eruption backwards.

Hey guys I’m a scouser from the heart of Liverpool can anyone tell me the story behind this time
@charlesduguid48114 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonny; do not know the story but can tell you its not a sea shanty . Sea shanty's are work type songs ; This is whats known as a Forbitter. A Forbitter IS an off duty song sung by the sailors usually off watch at night ; on deck singing to the moon and stars and reminiceing with a tott of rum.
@mannthemann61184 жыл бұрын
The song most probably refers to the 1812 war Britain vs USA. It is not to be assumed the "leavers" here were Scousers themselves, but the Liverpool harbour was the most important one to ship British troops westwards ove the briny.
@charlesduguid48114 жыл бұрын
Liverpool in that 1812 era was an important sea port and was used by merchant ships and whaling ships as well as Naval / troop ships. The song itself does not have a "military flavour" and I just wonder about that.? As I intimated before; its an off duty relaxation song sung by the sailors when off watch.
@andrewwigglesworth30304 жыл бұрын
@@mannthemann6118 It has nothing to do with the war of 1812, it's got nothing to do with soldiers embarking either. It's a song about a merchant sailor working out of Liverpool and looking forward to coming back home there. It's also a song that is from later in the 19th century anyway.
@nozecone3 жыл бұрын
It was 'collected' from a sea-captain in New York City, IIRC. Clancys could have been the first to record it, but it could well have been recorded by someone lesser-known earlier ......
@azkeyz14 жыл бұрын
just one problem , how can a ship named davey crocket be a her ?
@tooresttrikie67448 жыл бұрын
all ships are referred to as "her" or "she" its traditional as its largely believed they were protections from the treachery and danger of the sea...like your mother might do when you were an infant! hence SS Davey Crockett is a her/she ... :)
