Know the chorus and the melody Stateside as "Streets of Laredo" we had on vinyl Cowboys Ballads as bairns! Later, Johnny Cash did a version - "Beat the drums slowly & play the pipe lowly...For he was a young cowboy cut down in his prime." The wonderful world of ballads! Many thanks for posting, Linda! Until I heard this did not know roots of Streets of Laredo!

The source song which spawns all these versions seems to be an English ballad called "The Unfortunate Rake". As well as the American variant "Streets of Laredo" there is a lovely Irish variant too called "When I Was On Horseback". Eric Bogle obviously based the chorus of "No Man's Land" on one or all of these songs!

I would say they're all related to Pills of White Mercury, which is magnificently sung by Old Blind Dogs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJrMe4CditF8iJo

There’s another irish version called “The bard of Armargh”.

There's also at least one czech version called "Kovbojův nářek", which seems to be a translation of Streets of Laredo with bits taken from here

@@WhiteCavendish 'The Unfortunate Rake' is the original from which the others are variants.
