If you think this was bad you should read up on the Oceanos that sank. The entire crew in charge knew the ship was gunna sink and instead of putting out any alerts they threw their possessions in the life boats and left the ship without telling any of the passengers. The ships entertainment group were the ones that sent out rescue alerts. No one died and the crew were not found guilty because it was not in their contracts that they HAD to help others if the ship was gunna sink. There is also video of the ship going down at the end.

About the traces of cocaine in his hair, once you use it it doesn't get entirely flushed out right away, some metabolites ramain in your body for a while. That's why the hair test exists. Shows you did it somewhat recently even though you might not have been intoxicated at that instance. (Which in this case I think doesn't mean much, but anyway, that's the reason behind it)

Kind of like rings on a tree actually. The hair test always has a more broad view of what you put in your body in the last few weeks. (Mostly medical family and did lab work when I was younger, most common thing we did was hair testing. Still fascinating how your body will always call you out on things you did if you get in trouble.)

Tbh hair tests should *only* be done on people with a history of violent crimes while under the influence who have been court ordered to stay sober. If it doesnt show up in a urine test, you cant blame the incident on drugs imo. And even urine tests are iffy considering how long some drugs stay in the system and how short other drugs do. Cocaine leaves your urine after 2 days, weed can stay for up to 3 months depending on how often you use it and how much. Mouthswabs should be the only tests used in employment and accidents

I'd hardly call it arrogance. I've studied the Titanic disaster for nearly a decade at this point. It was more ignorance. Titanic was built with the best steel they could make in 1912, she was built to withstand the worst maritime disasters of her age and beyond (Which is why White Star called her _Practically_ unsinkable), and had more lifeboats than anyone believed she needed at the time. They put every precaution they could imagine into Titanic. Unfortunately, the damage Titanic took that night overwhelmed what they did have.

@SgtKilgore406 Like I had already addressed in my original comment, they already had more lifeboats than they believed she needed at the time. The idea a single ship needed lifeboats for every single person, at the time, was considered ludicrous and is 100% hindsight. It was believed, at the time, that there were enough ships at sea that another ship would be close enough to provide assistance with an evacuation. The other ship would lower their own lifeboats and the fleet of boats would transfer all the passengers from the striken ships to the rescue ship. No one could conceive of a situation where an entire Ship's passengers and crew would need to be evacuated and set adrift in the ocean.
@SgtKilgore406
@SgtKilgore406 Ай бұрын
@@VelociraptorsOfSkyrim You're still giving them credit with that statement. White Star Line would have been mocked and had their reputation tarnished if they had added enough lifeboats to the Titanic for everyone at that point in time. Especially after touting the Titanic as practically unsinkable. The fact still remains that they, along with almost every other ship builder at the time, were arrogant and could have made a life-saving decision if their greed, pride, and egos were in check. White Star Line is not totally to blame either. The weather certainly played its part that night including Captain Smith for not taking head and slowing down once they had confirmed reports of icebergs in the area. Yes, they had more than the legally required amount of lifeboats. Yes, they would have looked foolish for adding the proper number of lifeboats to Titanic. However, imagine how different that night could have been if they had. Safety regulations are sadly written in blood. It's crazy to think of how many tragedies could have been prevented if governments, corporations, and people actually gave a damn about life and didn't just follow the rules because they were forced to.

Hold up! The thing about Hungary not having laws against insurance fraud is completely false. (Hungarian here btw. Bojler.) Internet Historian kinda misunderstood that quote. The quote actually says "Hungary has never had anything like this happen... they don't know how to punish these people". It's a really unfortunate choice of words. There are insurance fraud laws in Hungary, obviously. What that quote means is, there is no legal precedent for these specific circumstances, eg. a case involving someone trying to unlawfully insert themselves into a nautical disaster that happened in a foreign country. It's also true they didn't take any money, never presented any documents (real or fake), never officially submitted any claims and no one was hurt or wronged. The whole thing basically happened over the phone with a private lawyer from the US. Since the conversations weren't recorded, they got nothing. The worst the scammers could be charged with is attempted fraud, but even then they have no evidence against them just hearsay and conjecture that will be easily thrown out of court.

Yeah, that sounded weird from the beginning and the justification of being a former communist country made no sense. The captain deserved jail time, but I think it should be noted that the trail was a bit of a kangaroo court. Like his second officer saying the captain never clearly took command over the bridge, he clearly did. It was in the ship recorder. He was also giving orders after the captain took the com which isn't something you're supposed to do. It's not a huge deal but it shows he's lying in trail and is painting the captain's actions in a more negative light than what was the reality. The fact is he was set up as a scapegoat. He made it really easy for people to do that because of his actions but he's still the scape goat and the truth is lost a bit when that happens. Again, I still think he deserves his sentence, but this was caused by a number of factors, not just the captain and I feel just for future safety's sake all of that really should be addressed so it doesn't happen again. The company also kind of got off easy from a legal sense but they did pay for the clean up so hope that taught them something. Probably not but who knows.

Helmsmann isnt that prestigous of a position. They only control the ruder on order of the Officers. Normally, a understanding of what the callouts mean would be completly fine. Driving into the harbor is also mostly done by officers, since the most delicate part is done with thrusters. The Helmsmann is basically there for the most boring part of the job, standing at the rudder, for hours only to get a callout here and there. Cleaner positions are the most plentifull on the ship and many crew from asia start there. Some then do side training on other positions to get into better departments. For Costa, i was with a daughter company so I may be off by some details for Costa, The Painters were part of the Deck Department. They maintain the hull off the ship and accessories like the anchor and winches. They also clean and paint the exterior of the Ship. The Deck Department is also where the Bridgestaff, the Officers and the Captains are. So going from Painter to Helmsmann isnt that much of a step as you may think it is. The Problem here was that he got overwhelmed, because usually this isnt happening. And you cant get trained regulary for "Captain fucks up because his mistress distracts him" in the guidebook

You know that whole End of the World Mayan Calendar December 21, 2012 prediction was not how the Mayan Calendar works. Just because their calendar ended on that date, doesn't mean the world was going to end, not even the Mayans thought that. That's just when it ended. You try making a calendar that goes from the 250s-900 CE all the way up till 2012. You'd get tired of that calendar, and just say, "here's a good place to stop." Also, according to them, the end of the calendar also meant something completely different. It was the end of ah era. That human consciousness would transcend to another state of enlightenment. The end of the material world, not physical matter--no, no--just the reliance on the material world as in putting importance on wealth, power, and prestige, which we all know causes corruption and evil in your spirit.
