Suggestion here Brian.Plant root crops like taro , ube, karlang, kamoteng kahoy or cassava and sweet potato or kamote.Leaves of kamote, karlang and gabi could also be use as foods for the pigs by cooking it.You can also cook the root which is the "unod".These root crops are vitamins and minerals rich.I knew you know it. As for how to cook this ask Maricel , she surely knows.. For cassava leaves , always mix with fresh grated coconut every time you cook it as pigs food.When you already have lots of left over produce of these crops.Sun drying or air drying it helps preserve it from spoilage.All these helps lessen your feed cost.

In 1977 a fellow flier a C-130 flight engineer retired to San Fernando La Union and just like his dad in Iowa started a pig farm in La Union. He specialized in the huge American sows. Up until then the American hog was not being commercially farmed in the Philippines. His pigs were so popular that by the end of the first year he had expanded his piggery twice. Within 3-years with some slick marketing supporting some major food chains in Manila he was a US $ multi-millionaire. I left the Philippines in 1980 for Europe and never saw or heard about my friend the retiree again. Brian, I would like to comment on another video of yours when you showed the great property with the bluff overlooking the ocean and the night lights of Cebu. As a born and raised Southern California brat there were many opportunities for property when I was growing up. My parents did not see fit to invest in any of these opportunities. However, as I was looking how close Cebu is to Bohol it is not unreasonable to believe working in Cebu and commuting via ferry to and from work from Bohol. Living a life of luxury in the country side while being paid a healthy city salary working in Cebu can be anyone's dream. Let's face it Cebu is the second largest city in the Philippines and is only getting larger. Cebu is also just a short flight to Hong Kong and Macau. (another opportunity to commute?) I predict this is what's going to happen in Bohol. Wouldn't we love to own some hectares in Bulacan right now when it could have been purchased on the cheap? The Japanese are donating a fast moving light rail system for commuters from Bulacan to Manila. How sweet is that? God bless you and yours...John and Jean from Vegas. ps. Good luck with your piggery. We're rooting for you all the way.

Hey Bryan(hope I got the spelling correct)....thanks for the honest detailed sharing of numbers. I'm not sure what your neighborhood is like but was wondering if you could set up a garbage collection process where in you can tell your neighbors to keep the kitchen wastes(vegetable or fruits) of the day for you. Also if they are any restaurants nearby that can provide you with the waste. You can use this waste to feed the pigs. It might not be that much but I'm sure it will help bring down the cost of feeding them a bit.
@aforeignerfarminginthephil33746 жыл бұрын
actually it with am "i" but no worries. when I raised pigs in the states I did exactly the things you are suggesting such as plate scraps, day old doughnuts etc. but I have not tried anything like that here mainly because it's a different culture here than in the west...NOTHING is wasted here. anyone owning or working in a place that might have left over or dated food has 20 realitives waiting for it to be brought home...that being said, I will ask around. you never know
@10OZDuster6 жыл бұрын
normally a rice farmer would farm pigs as the rice hulls and other things that grow on the farm will be the main source of free food if you had to "buy" feeds might not be profitable but not all is about profit you raise them because you want to have control and for personal consumption which most people do...but being a tropical country and with small farmland there are many sources-plants easily grown as pigs eat almost anything and plants grown on their own with minimal to no intervention or effort...find out locally which plants pigs eat...you'll be surprised..

I learned in my meats class in college (it was a land grant university with a large agricultural college) that you never want to feed your pigs/hogs any garbage. Left overs from your table is considered garbage. Garbage fed to pigs continues the life cycle of trichinosis. I believe it was the Netherlands at that time that had no trichinosis - you could eat raw pork from there without getting trichinosis. This was all because they have very strict laws about what you can feed swine.

Would be interesting to see what your margins would be if you scaled this operation 10x with some paid help. ~$1600 EBITDA is a good start, but I think u can scale this further if it’s really that profitable. As a benchmark, my rice farm on Bohol should make $3500 to $4200 EBITDA PM on 48 hectares of leased land after rent and labor costs (I outsource all labor to tenants). Average 3.9 MT per hectare = net 2300-2800 or so. Nothing astounding as rice fertility is relatively low in PI and I strictly use non mechanized methods but this model only requires about 200 hours of work per year on my end. With your model, land utilization is high, but I’m also guessing your operation is more labor intensive. I’d recommend getting your process down, focus on outsourcing, then once that is down find a large plot(s) in the area to buy/lease and then focus on management and marketing. Trade will always be more profitable than labor. If you could scale this model to 50 hectares it sounds like you would be making about $8-10k per month.

My calculations are similar to yours except piglets sell for 3000 pesos here. Also built a fattening setup for them. Hoping they sell piglets, Lecheon and bring some up to 100 kilos or so. Love your easy going attitude and hope you share your wealth. I have a feeling you already are. Floridian signing out.

Can you rent land with untended Mango trees and just let the pigs eat what is dropped? Are there certain pig breeds that do real well in the Philippines?
@aforeignerfarminginthephil33746 жыл бұрын
Most mango trees here must be sprayed with a hormone to flower and set fruit. No one here would make that kind of investment to allow the fruit to be used as pig feed. The older non-hybred breeds do the best anywhere..but have a less profitable feed conversion and slower growth rate.

Brian why don't they feed grass to the pigs to help reduce the cost of feed there?? We always let our pigs eat the grass and weeds on our farm when i was a kid.. We also let the sows have an area for recovering after the litters were done just a small place they can rest and be in the mud and water just to heal up and have fun, my dad;s pig's averaged 16 per litter (live).. just an idea.. Plus we never butcher on our place because dad said the pigs would know that and it adds stress to them
@aforeignerfarminginthephil33746 жыл бұрын
very good comment and suggestions. I based my litter survival rate as a "worst case" scenario. I to have had sustained survival rates of 13-14 piglets per litter. As for letting the sows roam on grass I don't really have the room and the nutrient value of grass is almost 0 when compared to a balanced feed.

How many man hours per day or week in caring for them? This is a stupid question but with so many pigs is there a concern for inbreeding? Also do different kinds (colors of looks) have different value? If so - why?
@aforeignerfarminginthephil33746 жыл бұрын
right now about 4 hours a day. when the sows farrow the time spent caring for them will increase. Here they don't care much about in-breeding but we will change out our boars as needed to keep that from happening. Color doesn't seem to matter to those buying

Sounds like you have some Hog raising experience but I will through in my peso's worth. ;) Been a while but used to work for my Uncle on a big (medium for US) Hog operation that later was taken over by Murphy. One key point to remember is keep your pigs Isolated from others to keep disease away. The one thing that can really ruin a larger pig operation. Disinfect feet, etc. of visitors and quarantine any new pigs until you are sure they are ok. Good luck,
