The beautiful Coton de Tulear...Known for their beautiful fluff, that resembles white clouds on a beautiful summers day.I’ve been grooming these majestic pups for many years nowand brushing sure is key to their beautiful coats! So here are some tips and tricks to help you along with your fluffy friend!I’ll bet that your Coton de tulear's coat has been easy to brush up until they hit anywhere from 6 months to a year... am I right? ok, so now you have entered the MAT ZONE. Knot after knot, you start to feel devastated. You’ve invested so much time getting your dog used to being brushed, and all that work you put in, seems like you hit a wall!
Why does my dog have so many knots even if I brush? That's because your Coton de Tulear has new adult hair coming in, and it’s probably getting a bit long. These coat types are sensitive to any type of friction.. like their collar, harness and whatnot.. They’ll tend to get knots under their arms, behind the ears, in their tuck up and even their little bums.To avoid this, there are many things you can do. One.. You need to know that water is really the Coton de Tulear’s enemy.. If they get wet.. You need to dry and brush out cause if you let them air dry on their own, you’ll definitely find some matting. So yes, brushing with a good brush and use a metal comb to see if your brushing work is well done. Go down to the base of the skin and gently pull the comb out to the tip of your pups hair, If you find some matting, There are tools you can use that take those mats out, dematting combs and thinners are two tools that are a must to have to keep those mats at bay. These tools are used to help cut the mats and knots into pieces so you can brush the hair out with ease. Two grooms ago I had to shave this little coton's feet and neck because there was so much matting.. His owner has been coming to me on a monthly basis for the last 10 years she's been amazing with the brushing.. But life happened and then the mats came in. so now you may have noticed that the hair on his front feet is really short, we’re working hard to get that hair to grow back mat free. Remember to never feel guilty or feel like you’ve failed your Coton de tulear if ever they get too matted and that your groomer just has to shave your dog down to start the growing process over.. Hair grows back.. Some may say the hair feels different once shaved down and of course it is… It’s now their adult hair.. no more baby hair. But don’t fret… the adult Cotton de Tulear is just as soft. One thing to remember.. It’s ok to give your coton a shorter cut, they look amazing in a puppy cut, The choice to keep their hair long or short will be decided upon your lifestyle and your dog’s lifestyle. Do you have time for all the brushing? You may have long work hours, kids, travel and whatnot. Does your Coton de Tulear enjoy brushing time? You need to be sure that your relationship with your dog comes first.. If your dog fears you every time you come around with the brush, maybe a shorter cut would be better suited for the pup. Whether long or short, Your dog will definitely turn some heads as these dogs love attention, have amazing personalities, and are so good with people!
