I didn't even know this was being made. This is one of my favorite books of all time. I'll have to seek it out.

Oh! I hope you like it. Just remember that it's not a totally faithful adaptation, but it sure gets the essence of the novel right and they do a great job of tuning it up for a modern audience. I really enjoyed it... and the subtitles weren't really an issue at all. Let me know what you think!

I loved it. Your review matches my experience of the film. It was so captivating and sensual, especially the music. The soundtrack was incredible.

Oh! I love hearing this. I am so glad you enjoyed the movie, and I hope more people go to see it. I think we need more movies that are produced with this level of detail and talent. And you are absolutely right about the soundtrack!!

Just watched it at home in 4k and Dolby Atmos... An absolutely stunning work of art. 😮

Oh! You saw it in 4K in a Dolby Atmos theater!! That must have been fantastic. Those are my favorite film experiences. Such good theaters! Such good visuals and sound. I love them. I'm so glad you got to see it there.

You just made my day. I wish spoke French so that I could have experienced it that way. I really loved this movie and it makes me so happy to know it’s this good no matter what language you speak. That is the power of good acting, good writing, and good directing! Wonderful!

I liked it, at least they didnt have edmond going back to mercedes.

Honestly! Yes! That would have been disastrous, and I kind of wondered if that might have been where they were heading. I'm so glad they didn't take that path.

I liked it, but it was too long and a bit disjointed at parts imo. I still like the 2002 version better for its simplicity and shorter runtime but this was still pretty decent.

It really was a long one, but I enjoyed it. They could have cut a few scenes a little. I really love the 2002 version as well. :-)

The 1st movie has a very young Henry Cavill in it

Is it wrong that I enjoy any movie with Henry Cavill? He's one of my favorites.

First, I have a copy of the book. Dumas may very well be my favorite author. I only recently saw a listing of this movie on IMDb. I had dismissed it, as I generally don't do well with subtitles (I'm not usually a fast enough reader). I have seen, and own a Blu Ray copy of 2002's w/Jim Caviezel (Person of Interest). I've also seen an earlier adaptation, possibly 1975's w/ Richard Chamberlain, but I can't be certain. After watching your review, I now have every intention to see it. Thank you.

I have the book, too! Is it wrong when I get this excited about people who love reading?!? 🙂 It's SUCH a good story. I haven't read it in far too long, but I did do some casual checks comparing the book to the film and there are some differences, but I really do think that the differences work for this film because they still preserve the essence of the story. Plus, Pierre Niney is now my favorite actor in this role. As for subtitles, I almost didn't go see this film because I can't read subtitles quickly. I have a astigmatism and dyslexia, which can make reading subtitles tricky. Actually, they can make reading anything tricky 🤣 but I never felt lost with the film. I got just enough from the subtitles to keep me in the story, but the acting is the thing that sold it. These actors all did a really good job, which is why the subtitles worked for me even when I couldn't keep up. I hope you enjoy the film and would love to know what you think of it! And, Jim Caviezel is one of my favorites. I ADORE him and Person of Interest is one of my all time favorite TV series. I was a puddle of tears after that series finale! Thanks so much for the comment. Have a great day!

If you love the book you should read the autobiography called The Black Count. Its about the Alexandre Dumas's father General Alexandre Dumas. Dumas pulled a lot of inspiration for The Count and The Musketeers from his father's amazing life. The Count was a way for Dumas's way to live out his own revenge fantasy. He hated Napoleon for allowing his father to be imprisoned and poisoned. Napoleon also denied him his military pension, took his home and banned him from Paris bc he feared he would lead a coup.

Where can I watch this?

Good question. I just did some searching and I don't see it in theaters any longer, but it looks like you should be able to find it on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Vudu. Let me know what you think of it! :-)

2002 version had some realism... he needed a lot of allies, former pirates..... not just two or three allies..... at least to recover the treasure.... and as bodyguards....

Beautiful movie but it honestly seems like they watched the 2002 adaptation a dozen times then read the spark notes for the book. The show that just came out is farer superior in terms of the story. Antagonists are wayyyyy to one dimensional, borderline mustache twirling. Performances are pretty good. Story for Haider and Andre were... head scratching to say the least. I'll say this. I'm glad I didn't travel anywhere to see it.

I totally get what you mean. I did really enjoy it on the big screen. However, I did also love the 2002 version as well since two of my all time favorite actors are in it.

I liked it, not as much as the 2002. But Niney did a good job. Liked your point about Haydee. They essentially blended Maximillian and Valentine's story with Albert and Haydee.
@ErinUnderwood18 күн бұрын
Yeah, I think they did some interesting things with her character... and I did really like Niney. I'm not sure which version is my favorite between this one and the 2002 version because they both have a lot going for them. :-)

The difference between Napoleon and this mediocre film is that Napoleon is based on a true story, and stupid changes to the story are not tolerated. Unfortunately, The Count of Monte Cristo is a fictional story and therefore stupid changes to the story are tolerated. Albert and Haydee are a generic version of Maximilien and Valentine, but Maximilien and Valentine work because there is no resentment or tragic past. Remember that Franz D'Epinay refused to marry Valentine after he learned that Noirtier was the murderer of his father. The novel itself shows this nonsense of the cliché of falling in love with your adversary's son. Although Alexandre Dumas was a romantic writer, he was influenced by Balzac and therefore diminished the daydreams of romanticism. And the final duel between Fernand and Edmond goes against the Count's conversation with André. The screenwriters do not seem to have carefully read the conversation between Franz D'Epinay and the Count in Rome. If the Count did not want to make his adversaries suffer, he would have killed them in secret, as Bertuccio stabbed Villefort. Imagine Denis Villeneuve, when filming his story about Cleopatra, omitting the relationship between Caesar and Cleopatra, with Caesar being just a side character for the Roman dictator's daughter who falls in love with the Roman dictator's grandnephew, Octavian. The film would have been completely massacred by historians. Luckily, this is a real story and stupid changes are not tolerated, as in fictional stories.
