As much as I enjoyed the Caviezel film, it was pretty bare bones omitting a lot of the book. I'm looking forward to seeing this new adaptation.

The film is directed and written by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière. Alexandre de la Patellière's father, Denys de la Patellière, was the director of the miniseries The Count of Monte Cristo (1979) with Jacques Weber. There will also be the series The Count of Monte Cristo with Sam Claflin as the Count and Jeremy Irons as Abbé Faria. The series will have 8 episodes. This series has already been filmed and is in post-production and is expected to premiere in December or January 2025. I watched the movie on a Russian pirate site and the photography and scenery are magnificent. It's on an epic level. Fernand is Mercedes' cousin in the book. And the person most responsible for Edmond's betrayal was his co-worker, Danglars, who planned everything. And for this, Dumas was inspired by his father's story. There is a book called The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo by Tom Reiss. The Black Count presents the life of the French General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, who served as the inspiration for the 1844 book The Count of Monte Cristo written by his son Alexandre Dumas. Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, also known as Thomas-Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie, was born in Jérémie, Saint-Domingue (Haiti) in 1762, the son of the Marquis Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie and Marie-Cessette Dumas, his Haitian slave. In 1798 General Dumas went to Egypt as the Cavalry Commander of the French Expeditionary Army of the Orient; on the march from Alexandria to Cairo, Dumas publicly confronted Napoleon about the motives of the expedition. Dumas departed for France shortly thereafter but was caught in a sinking vessel in the Mediterranean and forced to put ashore in hostile territory, where he was taken hostage and kept in a dungeon for over two years without clearly understanding the motives or identity of his captors. Edmond had a disagreement with Danglars and this was one of the reasons for him to write the complaint just as Napoleon abandoned his officer when he was captured. Dumas is the grandson of a slave and that is why the count marries his slave at the end. He has a slave in the book named Haydee.
