i was at a bluegrass festivile , blisterd fingers in vasselboro maine , and when charlie opened his mouth and began to sing it was like someone hit me in the chest with a 12 lb sledge hammer and knocked me back 20 rows, it was that powerful. maybe 15 to 20 years ago and i can still see him sitting on a stool and hear that voice. wow!!!

Charlies voice is deep and clear as spring water. So smooth and he carries the strongest melody line of them all. He is unforgettable. I was priviledged to hear him live many times.

Charlie Waller had one of the greatest voices ever in any genre of music. So pure, such range, and a unique rich rich tone.

I am a little partial to the 1971 version, off the Sound Off LP. It was exceptional 50 years ago when they released back then. The Country Gentleman Folkways label was the absolute best. The Country Gentleman was one of the best things that ever come out of Washington DC.

Charlie was one of a kind. Even more so amongst bluegrass singers.

As college students in D.C. 1972-76, we'd often see The Seldom Scene, Country Gentleman...as well as many other amazing musicians and groups... at the local clubs. The last time I saw the Country Gentleman was at a weird "Mexican" restaurant/ music club in D.C. in 1975? The "Mexican" food on the East Coast then sucked, but we went to hear the band; they were great. Both groups formed in the D.C. area when we were in high school around 1970-71. Luckily, we were hip enough at that age to like jazz, blues, rock, soul, classical and bluegrass; it was quite the melting pot on the East Coast then. We loved being part of the scene.
