The French left said it wanted to run the government but conceded on that talks would be tough and take time, after Sunday's election thwarted the far right's quest for power but delivered a hung parliament.
Many of France's allies breathed a sigh of relief after Marine Le Pen's National Rally (RN) failed to win the snap election called by President Emmanuel Macron.
But with the leftist New Popular Front (NFP) alliance, hastily assembled before the election, unexpectedly coming first but far from an absolute majority, the election heralded a period of volatility and possible gridlock.
Talk’s Kevin O’Sullivan discusses the results with author at The Spectator Gavin Mortimer.

@@susivarga7303the countryside in U.K. is absolutely magnificent and unlike a large part of the rural countryside in France, it’s still got thriving local communities. I should know, I’ve lived and still live in one such rural area. As for the food, I’ve never understood the hype around French food, unless you like eating virtually uncooked meat that is, but as for the rest, bof, as they say. And then you’ve got the French people; a miserable, arrogant unfriendly lot of people and I say this as someone who is married to a Frenchman with French kids. I think all countries should be split into left-wing and right -wing and everyone moves into the area under that political party and system. And Quran 6:6 "Have they not seen how many ˹disbelieving˺ peoples We destroyed before them? We had made them more established in the land than you. We sent down abundant rain for them and made rivers flow at their feet. Then We destroyed them for their sins and replaced them with other peoples."

The failure to accept responsibility for your government actions indicates sociopathic tendencies. When Libya was invaded by French artillery, not a word of protest from the citizenry. France sniffing around African countries in the sahel region yet you French peoples keeps quiet. Where do you expect those fleeing war instigated by your government to go to? They are desperate, hungry people coming to eat your lunch in Paris, Marseilles, Orleans or wherever they will find it

That is the good question everybody here in France is asking themselves. I believe he completely miscalculated the situation and thought he would win if he ganged up with the lefties. He just did not know how much people hated him. Even his own party asked him to keep a low profile and let his baby PM Attal do the election rallying. Has not helped much either. My guess is he being a psychopath will just ignore the outcome, but Melenchon will give him hell, and France is entering total chaos.

A Brit asks whether the French election system is democratic? What? You just said that with a straight face ? Really ? I can vote Green my entire life here in the UK and never have my vote translated into representation. What's fair then ? Our system ? Definitely not!
