In the original book, the only reason he killed that wolf was because both answered a female wolf's mating call. Kavik actually abandoned his journey and hanged out with her a few times, but then she got shot by a hunter, and then bled out later on. Later, a man, presumably the same hunter, arrives and takes the body away, then Kavik resumes his journey. Also, in the ending, Kavik actually kills Blackie and scatters the whole pack. Unlike in the movie, there's no lone challenger after Kavik chases the others off, and after that, Andy's father ends up convincing Kavik's original owner to let them have the dog. Personally, I like the way they handled the final battle in this version, as Kavik spared the lives of Blackie and the other dogs.
