Humanity fought longer and harder than any species the Covenant had ever encountered. It was both the largest and most technologically advanced non-Covenant species they had met, and after 27 years of endless war they still held on to their homeworld. No wonder the Elites got pissed with the Prophets. They respect honour and strength, so after 27 years of genocide against a species that had long ago ticked all the boxes for Covenant citizenship they were really having a hard time justifying more losses. Throw in some civil war action and the breaking of the entire Covenant religion and... BAM. No more Covenant. Great video!

No other game, maybe Mass Effect 3, but no other game has ever made me really wanna keep fighting. Because by the first game, humanity was on the brink. Earth, Luna, and Mars being all we had left. To not fight is to lay down and die. It gives you a sense of "Fuck no. You xeno bastards aren't gonna glass that green world." The music through out the game just adds to that. And the fact that humanity keeps fighting even when they only had 3 ships left, it makes me feel so proud to be human and not a Shanshium
@-CrimsoN-4 жыл бұрын
I know this is a 2 year old post, but FreeSpace (and old space sim) also has a really good story surrounding humanity's survival. Humanity is basically been in a 14 long war that has amounted to a stalemate with an alien species known as the Vasudans until an alien race known as the Shivans invade known space in a similar manner to the Reapers (of course FreeSpace came before Mass Effect, so maybe Mass Effect was inspired by FreeSpace). The Shivans are basically hell bent on destroying humanity, the Vasudans and basically all other life in the galaxy, but what makes the game really scary is how no matter what you do, it feels almost impossible to stop the Shivans as they start rampaging through system after system "glassing" planets as they go. Every victory you have against them is almost immediately null and void when the debriefing covers the Shivan's latest massacre. It has this effect on the player in feeling like they are fighting a losing war no matter how many victories they have.

The Covenant are one of my favourite alien empires/forces in all of scifi - the fact that religion and a pure thirst for conquest are their motivating factors rather than typical reasons like resources make it much more believeable in my opinion. Isaac Arthur done an episode a few days ago about planetary invasions and how in real life they wouldn't really happen much because if you really wanted to go to war with a planet you could really just kill everyone from space, yet the Covenant give the perfect reason why an alien (or human) force might actually choose to invade a planet: religious/ideological reasons.

The Sangheili are actually in a dire state after the fall of the covenant, they was so caught up with the military area that they struggle with the parts the Prophets took care of and start a civil war. Only Arbiter group sided with humanity and many elites in his group only tolerate humans for Arbiter and his ancient family position in Sangheili society. Arbiter is very progressive among Sangheili and many was appalled when he let humans come to their homworld.

Humans tend to split into tribes/clans and fight each other, even within our own nations. When an outside nation attacks the tribes or clans band together against the outsider. The one thing that is most likely to band all humanity together is a non-human threat, the Covenant walked into that role of their own religious fanaticism.

Halo is my favorite sci-fi universe where humanity is the underdog. Its not unreasonable that we can fight back, and even gives us a crazy amount of time to get where we are in Halo, accounting for world wars and conflicts that arise as we become space-faring. The interweaving of forerunner lore and tech really adds another element to everything, because it allows for ground conflicts where humanity can really fight back. This is not to mention that we never stop losing ground, even during the covenant civil war, because our infrastructure was simply not strong enough. It took the flood and the Elites to win in the end, since the undoing of the covenant was simply cutting off the intelligent head and leaving the rest to writhe blindly. The food wiped out most of the high council along with mercy, the elites seceded and killed truth, and our boy 117 wasnt all powerful but managed to assassinate regret. The protagonist isn't the center to everything, but is justifiable (with cortanas help) a bringer of crucial intelligence along with being the one to prevent the great journey

All it takes is one egg to make contact with civilization/society. Once it's made contact, it's game over. You'd get xenos taking on traits of jackals, elites, brutes, grunts, and any other species that are apart of the covenant. xenomorphs have the ability to wipe out an entire planet it makes contact with without any use of weapons

Not only that, the human-covenant war was mostly just contained in the Orion Arm of the milky way. So there is alot left unknown and unexplored in the milky way alone. So yes the Halo universe is huge af

I love how you guys do your research. Other informational channels regarding Halo don't do as much research, often times which merely requires a simple reading of either Halo Nation or Halopedia. Not gonna name any names, but I think people know who I'm talking about when I say some don't do their research...

looks like its sweeping time Yeah, here you are spreading your heresy as well. 40k STOMPS the covenant, point-blank.
@iamdream25626 жыл бұрын
Just Move Along, There's Nothing to See Here He’s right you know, wh40k fan supremacy mentality is super annoying. Its true that most factions in 40k could stomp the covenant, except perhaps the Tau. Overall though, when you put ancient halo vs ancient 40k. 40k loses for sure, and this is coming from a huge 40k fan.

Not to be the stick in the mud, but I feel like more could have been said about each species and their inclusion to the Covenant. Examples include: Sangheli and their obsession with honor and virtue. Lekgolo and how they can consume Forerunner building material, travel in pairs, and details about "The Taming of the Hunters". Unggoy breath methane and almost colapsed the Covenant with "The Grunt Rebellion." Among others. I don't know how to find them, but Halo Waypoint had good informational videos during the Halo: Reach days.

There are some parts I consider to be wrong. I'll just make a small list and lay it down here. Bear in mind though, I found your video formidable and description of the Covenant complete, and the editing combined with the amazing visual work of Bungie is so emotional that I almost shed a tear. 1. *Other races than elites can totally be allowed to control ships.* The most obvious example was that san'shyuums controlled many of the greater ships in the Covenant. Many lesser ships could also be led by kig-yars, and whole cruisers could sometime fall in command to jiralhanaes. 2. *In very rare cases and after the unggoy rebellion, unggoys could be highly respected,* to the point where they could lead troops to combat. It was not rare for ultra unggoys to lead kig-yars, even if the rivalry between the two is quite visible. 3. *Races that are member of the Covenant do not necessarily believe strongly or even at all in the Great Journey.* Kig-Yars and Yanme'e were mainly there for political and economical purposes. 4. The first contact with the Covenant was indeed violent, but *it was not part of the human genocide,* nor part of any war effort against humanity. It was a small raid by a kig-yar ship, attracted by a beacon signal, on a civilian ship having technical difficulties. Conflict first occured when a nervous unggoy inadvertenly fired at a human soldier during the first real contact between humanity and the Covenant. 5. *The Covenant didn't always rely on Prophets for its political system.* In fact; it wasn't until the latter age of Reclamation and the Human-Covenant war that the Prophets came to be, *as they were formerly high Ministers.* These High Ministers held identical powers to the High Council, effectively mimicking our present "balanced' executive and legislative powers. *The Covenant wasn't a dictatorship* until the three former Ministers who became the Prophets were told the truth by the A.I. Mendicant Bias about the Forerunners and their structures. They then decided to subvert the original political system and cut power from the High Council to have more control, to avoid the truth to be revealed to the whole Covenant, and thus the common faith and the alliance itself from collapsing. They were in a dead end, knew that the Covenant was over, but couldn't accept it because it would have caused a civil war of unprecedented scale. They decided to lie to preserve the alliance, and thus the human genocide started. Such levels of power and responsibility eventually drove Truth mad, and when he couldn't keep the lie running for much longer, he decided to activate the rings. Yes, their society was highly racist, to a point where lesser species (Legkolo and Unggoys) were basically slaves. But it wasn't really corrupted or a dictatorship until the last years of the Covenant, as there was a true form of consultative and representative government for races that were considered to be citizens.
