This guy is obviously educated beyond the point required to realize the fallacy of the construction of his argument; that being said, I'm still only 99% sure he's not serious. Either way, I like him and I hope this goes viral. I would really like to see Early Cuyler animated to the audio. Hilarity. Ensues.

How does he not start laughing while spewing out these absurdities? I mean either he really is dead serious, or he is just a great artist and I‘m too ignorant to recognize satire on the internet - yeah, must be that.
@upublic6 жыл бұрын
@ stadpark it's satire like in the good old days of 2006, with the likes of Edward Current, DarkMatter2525 and Soldier in God's Army, masters of satire =)) It's hard to pinpoint the proof, because as you say it's almost indistinguishable from the real thing, but those of us who are accustomed to this worksmanship can tell. We've been fooled too in the past so no worries, your brain is more than fine :)) EDIT: Soldier's old backups are found on TheAntichristSpeaks channel nowadays kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWatm4Kvot-lnbc

Yeah, the mysteries of consciousness (as so many things) are misused as 'evidence' for God, a universal consciousness, or whatever. But then, to think traditional physicalist explanations that try to eliminate or explain away consciousness are the only game in town - while more fashionable in intellectual circles - is just as ridiculously presumptuous. So not as funny as it might be to the philosophically naive and/or bullish anti-theists.
@PhilHalper16 жыл бұрын
Given the past success of physical theories to explain mysteries it doesnt seem quite as ridiculous as I think you imply.
@infov0y6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it would be successful, because the scope of what counts as 'physical' is expended on each empirically successful new model to include every component of its ontology. So for each mystery solved It can hardly fail - if it can be modelled by physics, it's 'physical'. Hence what once meant something like 'solid' or 'of substance' now includes possibilities such as quantum fields, virtual particles, emergent spacetime, and hidden dimensions, which are very unlike the original meaning and all of which would have been the antithesis of 'physical' at some time or other. And that's all fine, because as I just pointed out, the only reasonable definition of 'physical' is 'amenable to physics'. I certainly hope consciousness is amenable to an explanation by physics, but find the claim that it already is (or at least has to be) explainable by what we count as 'physical' right here and right now a bit silly. It's just an open question, that's all.
@PhilHalper16 жыл бұрын
So if we discover new things we should just ignore them because their new?
@infov0y6 жыл бұрын
No, we should add them to the list of things we currently think the world consists of. But given that the things we think exist at any one time always include things thought not to exist at previous times, we should be humble enough to know that *our* time is likely no different, and so the list nowhere near complete. But I'm unsure what you're getting at. My point is just that the means by which the phenomenon of consciousness comes about is a wide open question (and even if it's a valid phenomenon at all of course). Using God as an answer without evidence is silly yes, but using 'just *known* physics' as an answer without evidence to pretend to close off the mystery is silly too.
@PhilHalper16 жыл бұрын
I dont think anyone is suggesting consciousness is explained by just knowing physics. Two theories are mentioned in this video and neither them are making that argument.

Consciousness is a construct of the brain. Much like all of our sensations of sight, hearing, touch,smell, taste, and relative temperature are not real manifestations of the external environment outside our skin but are internal construct which we experience within the consciousness construct. Consciousness doesn’t represent an individual biological entity. It isn’t a single specific cell but rather an arrangement of cells where the alignment creates the experience of consciousness. Our lack of connection to another’s consciousness is probably the inability of our neurons to functionally connect into a link. I can speak, touch, taste, give or remove pain from another conscious being but I can’t share their experience of consciousness which they have in their own bodies. That is up to this point in our evolution. As a physical therapist I use touch to reduce painful sensations in another persons body. I can feel the pain via touch. I’m not experiencing the pain but I can feel what they perceive as bodily pain. Pain being a sensation but not a real function of injury, only a conscious construct of the brain which modifies behavior to mostly minimize damage. I wonder if there are examples of conjoined twins which share a portion of brain in which a sensation or motor function is shared between two brains? This ambien stuff is powerful.

We will believe what we will, but there is one thing for certain. There's an inexhaustible supply of the unknown and the unknowable. We are insects clinging onto the flotsam of an explanation floating in a vast ocean of mystery.
