Bruce Dern typically gets huge credit for his portrayal of Longhair on The Cowboys, and rightly so. But Roscoe Lee Browne as the trail cook Mr. Nightlinger was equally outstanding.

So many great roles in his career and oddly enough, I remember him most as Box in Logan's Run.

He was so spot on with that voice. I cannot imagine the director having to do multiple takes.

Role first offered to David Carradine but he didn't want to be first to kill John Wayne.

Throughout that Film from John Wayne clear through the Entire Cast they all were outstanding in the playing and Acting of Their Roles. And over the Year's No one could've played the Bad Guy any better than Bruce Dern Did. By the end of that Film, He was one Helluva Despised SOB that was forever, loathed hated, remembered and Never forgiven for Killing The Duke the Way He DiD. TKS

Dern wound up paying for it in the long run. He said Wayne got smashed before the fight scene, & told him before the shot that if he was going to kill him on screen, he wasn't pulling any punches. When Wayne slammed Dern into the tree, he did it with all the real force he could muster, & it permanently injured Dern's back. He has back trouble to this very day because of it.

@@grantgarrod2232 I had heard some remarks of that nature being said. Also there was a lot of Political differences being spread around that Set, from the producer/ director's side too Their political beliefs vs John Wayne's Rep. ones that at the Time He was very much pro Republican & backing up the Government's views upon the Republican Side of Thing's. And we all know that Politics Do Not fare well in Work, people's Dinner's or even when it's a part of everything. Thank You.
@grantgarrod223213 күн бұрын
@@robertwaid3579, Wayne held staunch conservative Republican views all his life, quite different from the majority of people in Hollywood then, & even more so today. He & Kirk Douglas were never friendly, & butted heads repeatedly for decades, for that very reason.

For the world to hate you because of a character you played, shows just how good an actor Bruce Dern is. I remember him in "Diggstown" also.

A few months after The Cowboys was released, Bruce Dern was on Johnny Carson. He related an incident that had happened shortly after his release. He was driving down a highway and as a highway patrolman went past in the opposite direction, they made eye contact. When Bruce Dern saw the patrolman make a U-turn and turn on his flashing lights, he pulled over to the side. As the patrolman got out of his vehicle, he drew his pistol and ordered Bruce to get out of his car and raise his hands. The patrolman got his I.D. and was more than a little bit nervous as he tried to figure out where he knew that face. Wanted poster? News flash? What? Finally, it dawned on Bruce Dern to ask if the patrolman had seen the movie, The Cowboys. The patrolman, confused, admitted that he had. Suddenly, he was embarrassed as all get out when he made the link between the face on the screen and the face on the serial killer, child molester, window peeker, and generally all-around evil person standing there with his hands up. Talk about owning a role. Bruce Dern might have taken home The Gold for his portrayal in The Cowboys.

Before they shot the scene where John Wayne dies, Wayne told Dern that they will hate you for this. Dern replied, but they will love me in Hollywood. Wayne was a staunch Conservative when Hollywood was filled with Socialist/Communist. Still is I think.
