Noel Hogan is an Irish musician and record producer best known as the lead guitarist and co-songwriter of the Irish alt-rock band the Cranberries
Hogan formed the Cranberries with his brother Mike and drummer Fergal Lawler in 1989. The group recruited Dolores O’Riordan as singer soon after forming. The band went on to sell in excess of 40 million records worldwide. In total, Hogan has released eight albums with the Cranberries, most of which were produce by Stephen Street.
The Cranberries went on a six-year hiatus from 2003 to 2009. However, after lead singer Dolores O’Riordan’s death on 15 January 2018, Hogan confirmed the disbandment the Cranberries, which occurred after the release of the posthumous album In the End in 2019, saying: “The Cranberries without Dolores just isn’t The Cranberries… we won’t replace our friend and lead singer”.
With the Cranberries on hiatus from 2003 to 2009, Hogan turned to focus on his own music. He began working with programmer Matt Vaughan, who had already done work on unreleased Cranberries songs and Dolores O’Riordan’s solo material. Mono Band was born with Hogan as the sole band member. With vocals being supplied by Richard Walters, Alexandra Hamnede, Kate Havnevik, and other guest artists, Hogan worked with Cranberries’ veteran producer Stephen Street to compile a mix of 12 tracks. Working on his side project at the same time, saw their resulting debut album, Mono Band, released on 20 May 2005. Hogan and Mono Band vocalist Richard Walters went on to form Arkitekt. Arkitekt released two EPs at that time in 2009, working on new material.
Hogan’s work independent of the Cranberries has been released on his own label, Gohan Records and is published through Fairwood Music (UK) Ltd for the world.
Hogan has also been producing bands on the local music scene of Limerick. Gohan Records has recently released, in collaboration with Limerick Live 95FM’s Green and Live show, “Tonelist”, a collection featuring musicians in the Limerick music scene.

I saw Dolores once. She was having a cigarette outside some place in London. I had to look at her a few times to believe it was really her and as I walked past, I said, loud enough for her to hear “there’s the queen of Limerick” to my friend. She laughed and said “I don’t f**king feel like it today.” I shouted “You’re a legend Dolores!” and her smile was awesome. Happy days.

My mom and her friend went to one of their shows back in the early 90s, and she said that her and her friend had lunch with them, she said that the boys acted very done with this crack jokes at a tether the entire time, and that Dolores was a bit shy, but they were all incredibly sweet. And then years later someone in our church died, and she route up to them they donated money.

Such a humble guy, saying that he wasn't a very good musician with that honesty but yet was able to be a part of such a fantastically melodic band. Most of their songs involved only 4 chords but what they could do with those chords was amazing and Dolores' voice and melodies were brilliant. Great interview!

I knew Dolores was an extraordinary musician since she was a child, but listening to Noel words is so beautiful. We can say Noel, Mike and Ferg learned to be great musicians, and Dolores was it since she was in her mom.

wow! that was so amazing to hear thank you so much. I love The Cranberries they will live on forever, RIP, Dolores. I felt like I had a behind the scenes glimpse of how ssongs were written and produced. Just love the bits about how Noel and Dolores wrote together, just wonderful. In The End saved my life literally thank you to Noel, Ferg and Mike for bringing those songs to the fans. It was like one last gift, and it's very special to me.

🤩🤩 Wow! Noel is a really pure musician! As he himself pointed out, there was no pollution in the thinking about the music because there was no preconceived ideas about how music was “supposed to be played”. And look how he turned out. Fantastic and pure. I wish I had known this about him a lot sooner…

Saw the Cranberries at the Wiltern Theater April 7, 1995 - a crowd under 2,000, and then saw them again just a few months later at the Irvine Amphiteater in Sept. 2, 1995 for a crowd of around 16,000 !!!!! Toad The Wet Sprocket was the opening band. Yes, I keep lots of stuff from shows I've watched. Amazing shows.

45:00 I think Noel is slightly confused and is actually talking about Bury The Hatchet, which was their comeback album in 1999, which Stephen wasn't involved in (good album, though).

Interesting discussion, but 59:40 is doubtful, Delores was in a mess by this time because of the horrific experiences in her childhood & she'd fallen victim to the American psycho-tropic drug epidemic, which is ultimately what killed her 40 years before her time, not because she had a "bad back". 'In the End' was a fine LP given the disastrous circumstances of its recording for the act.

Awesome interview and I don’t think Noel or his brother nearly get enough credit. People usually just associate the cranberries with Dolores, yeah she definitely is the centerpiece and the glue that holds the band together. But I think Mike, Noel, and Fergal deserve credit as well. But I gotta say it as much as I’m a fan of them, I didn’t like how they treated bad wolves or their cover of the song.
