I think that the whistling arrows are actually for beginner practice archery and that the whistling allows you to more accurately track the general direction and approximate distance that the arrow has travelled. Having lost several dozen arrows (and many hours searching) to the nightmare that is tall grass, I feel that, to an extent, those whistling arrows could provide to be an absolute godsend to archers who have the frustrating habit of missing their targets.

That “twitting” tip is used for signaling in ancient times. There was a Xiongnu chanyu in the 3rd century BC called Modu, who invented such a type of sirening arrows and trained his horse archers to shoot volleys at whichever direction the sound went, sort of like how a tracer works. He even ordered them to shoot his favorite horse and concubine, and anyone who hesitated were judged as disloyal and summarily executed. Modu’s father preferred the younger son, and exiled Modu. Modu later assassinated his father during a hunting trip using the sirening arrow.

@stephenkay11044 жыл бұрын
Why would you not want it to penetrate?
@exnihiloadnihilum50944 жыл бұрын
They are designed for birds and rodent. Penetration would destroy much of the animal because they are so small and have comparitively fragile bodies (think turkey hunting, you use shot not a rifle bullet). Instead you want to kill via blunt shock trauma. It preserves the smaller game's body. The prongs help grasp to the animal creating drag so it's harder for them it flee in the short burst of adrenaline they sometimes have, help reduce risk of penetration by spreading the energy a bit more, as well as preventing it from burying itself in the ground.
@blackfox30824 жыл бұрын
Yep, exactly! The hooks will also catch branches and weeds if it misses so its harder to lose the arrow. Its also recommended to use flu-flu arrows (really puffy fletching that slows the arrow down a bit) with them.

Most whistling arrows are used for hunting and the whistle is designed to cause a predictable reaction, such as to startle the animal between release and impact. Regulations are often very specific about which arrow to use for which animal, implying that some animals may have responded differently to certain sounds. You can also use the whistling Arrowhead to warn other Hunters that there are either Bears or Wolves in the area.
@stevelewis72632 жыл бұрын
The multi pronged arrow tip at 12:45 is a "Judo" point designed for small game such as rabbits and birds imparting a lot of shock without penetrating, but if you miss your target the prongs grab the grass and the arrow tumbles and lays on the surface and doesn't bury itself in the ground by "snaking"
@lucasbastos10 Жыл бұрын
This is the comment I came looking for. Thanks for the explanation!
@sevenproxies42554 жыл бұрын
Decelerating the arrow isn't a bad thing though in terms of ballistic impact. That's part of the reason why hollow point bullets are so devastating to soft targets compared to full metal jacket bullets. With full metal jackets, unless the bullet tumbles or is stopped by bone, the bullet will pass through, and thus a lot of energy is "wasted" to propel the bullet out of the body. But with hollow points almost all of the energy is transfered to the target it hits. It's the same thing here, more energy is transfered to the target as the arrow decelerates inside of it.
@gibbeldon4 жыл бұрын
I don't think we can compare bullets and arrows in this regard. Arrows usually aren't fast enough to shoot straight through a target.

A lot of special forces (especially during black ops missions) they use these! I love your broadhead stiletto idea! Just to answer something you mentioned in the video, the tri-edge of a stiletto is that way because a rod without any edges will make a wound that closes itself when the weapon is withdrawn (it also has to force open whatever wound it makes, which consumes energy from the strike). A stiletto with three edges will cut a triangular wound that will almost never stop bleeding and is very difficult to heal, as well as adding a lot less resistance because it cuts through instead of poking through.

I remember dimly some early Robin Hood movies, where they used special howler arrows for signalling. They shot the message arrow in a high trajectory roughly in the direction of the recipient. A message would be wrapped around the shaft and the noise would alert the watchmen of the incoming message and also make it easier to find it.

16:30 from what I understand, the triangle shape makes it hard to stitch the wound. Also, *IF* it was used a parrying side arm, the edges give you information and control over the oppents weapon.

i use the small game head /the spring one against old footballs as targets in my backyard, if i miss which happens a lot the arrow doesn't bury itself in the ground and get lost when shot at a shallow angle. against an old football the arrow doesn't penetrate but it hits it really hard, i use the small game head because of the rubber air ball inside the football can grab onto a regular field tip arrow shaft and make it extremely difficult to remove

Yeah, it would turn a rabbit into rabbit salsa instantly. Only really need the force of throwing a large stick at a rabbit to stun or even kill it.

I have those and I tried them with my 40lbs hunting bow. They're great for stump shooting and similar activities. As you're not allowed to do so here in Germany I have never been hunting small game with them but I think they'll work well enough. Some cheaply built ones were instantly destroyed when trying them out, at least the springy parts. Other more sturdy and expensive ones held up well. It's really funny when they got caught in something more massive like roots or brambles the arrows just flip over and come to lie facing towards you instead of in the direction you shot them.

We use those judo points (spring loaded) to go "stump hunting" or practice shooting on tree stumps in the forest. Springs help the arrow from burying into the ground and the stump point from the arrow burrying into the tree.
@drachenlied85yt534 жыл бұрын
"there is no known defense technic with stilletos." simply put all defense technics designed for knifes or short swords would work with a stilleto too. and since the "blade" is mostly round and has no edge it is more sturdy, can absorb much more shock and has lesser surface friction which is good if f.e. you manage to deflect a thrust.
@guesswho44634 жыл бұрын
Without context, stilettos are shoes with an 11 inch heel so good luck fighting in them🙂

stabbing the butt, that's the only defense technique, simple because is the only place where you can stab someone and not kill them. If you ask for my sources, jail, that's a pretty reliable source about stabbing people. No, I had not done my time, my brother in law did.

@DjDolHaus864 жыл бұрын
I think he means more that is purely an offensive tool rather than a utility type knife which could also be used for defence. Stiletos are shaped purely for effective stabbing unlike say a bowie knife of similar length which can also be used to cut meat or whittle wood. Another analogy might be that a screwdriver would make a half decent stiletto but a stiletto would be no good as a screwdriver

The "king of fun" arrow was used to send messages in the medival times. It is loud so your recipient will know where it lands and that it is coming. The tip usually didn't have the space inside the tip and the message was tied onto the outside.
