In 1995, the Stanford Cardinal went 7-3-1. You'd think with a record like that, they would be an absolute lock to make it to a bowl game, right? However, thanks to the absolute incompetence of their athletic department and their inability to do the bare minimum, that almost did not happen.

Part of what I like about your videos is watching the footage. The quality is pretty good in this one especially for the 90s. I've been trading tapes then dvds then files for over 20 years. It's really hobbyist like myself that such footage is easily accessible. Often 90s footage looks the worse because of low quality vcrs, tapes and slp recording speed. When you find footage before 1977 it often looks amazing because old codders like me found ways of bribing folks from the networks to making copies from the masters. These of course were machines that cost 100k and made beautiful recordings that had resolution that was unequaled until the DVD era.

Makes me wonder if Stanford's athletic department thought that the PAC-10 office was brokering all of the bowl bids and the Cardinal would just be told where they are going, and then realized they were on their own and needed to make all of the arrangements themselves. By 1995, most conferences were pretty much dealing with and assigning bowls themselves, and telling the teams where they would play. That Stanford even had to tell the Liberty Bowl they wanted to come is kind of odd, to be honest. But maybe the PAC was still doing things the old way. I remember you talking about how USC made their own deal for a bowl in '85 when they needed a win just to have a winning record. If they were still letting teams do their own bowl deals in '95, they had to be the last ones. East Carolina, of course, was still an independent and had to take what they could get. In 1991, they went 10-1 and the Peach Bowl grabbed them when the ACC assigned NC State to be the other team there. The Wolfpack didn't want to play them but had to.
