At the 1972 Rose Bowl between the Stanford Indians and Michigan Wolverines, Stanford head coach John Ralston had weeks upon weeks to get ready for the matchup. As for how he used those weeks... well, Stanford didn't even have a game-plan just days before the game. The crazier part about all of this? Somehow, this bold strategy somewhat worked. This is the story behind the craziest plan, or lack thereof, in the history of the Rose Bowl

Stanford had won the previous Rose Bowl. This was a repeat victory for them. And they got to play THEIR rendition of the National Anthem. It is a spine tingling piece of work. And although Stanford practiced at Long Beach City college, Michigan spent three days at Disneyland.

I forgot they used to be known as the Indians. I have a feeling Ralston had a basic game plan, but he didn't want to install it until the last second because he didn't want Schembechler to get wind of it. Oh, and congrats on the first video of the new channel!

I don't know how Stanford pulled this upset with no real game plan, but it did it! Also, I knew the Big Ten didn't have at-large bowl berths back then, but I didn't know the then-Pac-8 had a similar rule. Thank goodness that rule was dropped. I guess this is why some legacy members of those 2 conferences don't have the bowl histories of some SEC programs.

Ummm...this is the same season where Oklahoma set an NCAA record that still stands by averaging 472 yards rushing per game. No one in their right mind thought Michigan had the best running game in the country during the 1971 season, or that Michigan was better than Nebraska, the defending national champion who went 13-0 and beat those Sooners.

Gotta agree. Michigan was behind NU, OU, Colorado (which people forget lost only to Nebraska and Oklahoma) and an Alabama team that would get hammered by Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.

Great video, and I love the series---but you have way too high an opinion on Michigan...they were at best the fifth best team in the nation, behind Nebraska (the '71 team is consistently considered one of the best of all time), Oklahoma (which was robbed of immortality when they lost the "Game of the Century" to Nebraska) and Colorado, which only lost to NU and OU with one of their best teams of all time. And don't forget Alabama, which was ranked #2 going into the bowls before Nebraska gutted them. Stanford saw a Wolverine team ripe for the picking, and after defeating a far better Ohio State team the year before, they had no fear of the Big Ten champs.

Not the first time Stanford was involved in a 13 - 12 upset that season. On November 13th, then 10th-ranked Stanford hosted their long-time patsy, 3-4-1 San Jose State, only to fall 13-12. That loss was the third time Stanford lost immediately after reaching the top 10 that season.

I think part of the reason for the Stanford upset despite Michigan looking so unbeatable was that Michigan played a Charmin-Soft schedule. Going into the Rose Bowl, they hadn't played a single team that would end the season ranked. Only 3/11 of their games were against teams that would finish with a winning record, the best of those 3 winning records being a 7-4 Northwestern team.

You said "If Michigan wins, they have a legitimate shot at the very least of splitting the national championship and maybe even winning it outright depending on how the other games played out." I'm guessing you're saying this to make the stakes higher than they really were. Michigan was unbeaten coming into the game but they were ranked 4th in both polls. The winner of the Orange Bowl between Nebraska and Alabama was winning it. Michigan's best hope was get some first place votes but they probably end up 3rd if they won.

Dangit, lol....I'm a longtime Michigan fan....so OF COURSE the first video on this channel is something about a game Michigan lost! What are you gonna cover next, their infamous loss to Appalachian State, or maybe the Kordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook hail mary where Colorado beat Michigan at the last second? LOL....but I should have known that was coming when I realized this was about a Michigan bowl game when Bo was coaching. Great coach, but his bowl record was NOT good, only 5-12 actually Also, speaking about the Rose Bowl, another idea for a video perhaps....there was the controversial 1973 Michigan vs OSU game. It ended in a 10-10 tie, and afterward the Big 10 held a vote to decide which team would go on to the Rose Bowl, which OSU won. The rule about how they wouldn't let a Big Ten team go to the Rose Bowl two years in a row had been repealed a few years earlier, and actually if it had still been in place, Michigan would have gone.

Michigan wasn't a great team. The Big 10 rep would almost always go to the Rose Bowl back then and get beat. The Big 10 wasn't very good in that era. In the previous Rose Bowl, Ohio State was unbeaten and three-loss Stanford beat them by 10.
